Olivia Colman on Good Hang with Amy Poehler

The Hang, in Short

Benedict Cumberbatch kicks things off with a solid bit about needing glasses now but refusing LASIK because, and I quote, he hides behind them so people think he's smarter. He and Amy bond over their matching 1.6 prescriptions before he dishes on Olivia Colman, his co-star in The Roses. They've apparently never worked together before this, which seems wild. Benedict gushes about how annoyingly upbeat Olivia is, like how is anyone that authentically delightful? The two get into a whole thing about British versus American humor, with Benedict admitting Americans have "passed you in the mean Olympics" and "broken the dial" on roasting culture. He asks Olivia what she's most afraid of, which is genuinely sweet. Then Amy and Olivia compare ages (Amy's 50, Olivia's 51) and discuss their parallel paths through comedy institutions, SNL and Footlights.

    Hello everyone. Welcome to another

  2. 0:01

episode of Good Hang. H what an a lovely

  3. 0:04

guest we have today. Olivia Coleman, an

  4. 0:06

incredible actress, just a dear, tender

  5. 0:10

beautiful person. And um we are going to

  6. 0:13

talk about a lot of great things today.

  7. 0:15

    We're going to talk about

  8. 0:17

whether or not it's important to fight

  9. 0:19

in relationships. We're going to talk

  10. 0:21

about playing the queen. Uh we are going

  11. 0:24

to talk about her new movie, The Roses

  12. 0:27

and all the hilarious people that she

  13. 0:28

got to be in it with. We're talking

  14. 0:30

about so many good things today. Um but

  15. 0:32

we always want to uh start these

  16. 0:34

episodes by bringing in someone who

  17. 0:36

knows our guest, who helps us uh ease

  18. 0:41

into our guest, who gives us a question

  19. 0:43

to ask our guest. And we got a big star

  20. 0:46

today. We have an actor who was in

  21. 0:51

Doctor Strange. He was Sherlock. He is

  22. 0:55

in the roses. He is also famously in a

  23. 0:59

Kian Peele sketch where they name

  24. 1:02

football player names. He is the one

  25. 1:04

    the only Benedict Cumberbatch

  26. 1:08

    from Oxford University.

  27. 1:12

    >> Benedict., Hello.

  28. 1:16

    >> What, do, you, say?

  29. 1:19

    All I ever wanted.

  30. 1:24

    >> Hey, Amy,, how, are, you?

  31. 1:25

    >> Hi., It's, good, to, see, you.

  32. 1:27

    >> I, got, ridiculous, glass, on, because, I

  33. 1:29

    can't see. So you're

  34. 1:30

    >> okay., You, can, just, hear, my, voice., No,

  35. 1:32

    >> I, can, see, you, now, because, I'm, wearing

  36. 1:34

these glasses like this. You're a

  37. 1:36

beautiful blonde blur, but like that.

  38. 1:37

    You're a very sharp blonde.

  39. 1:39

    >> Now,, what's, your, prescription?, Because

  40. 1:41

    are you new to glasses?

  41. 1:43

    >> 1.6., Something, like, that., I'm, I'm, new, to

  42. 1:45

    sort of giving into them.

  43. 1:47

    >> Same., I'm, just, I, like, need, them, for

  44. 1:49

reading but not yet for driving.

  45. 1:51

    >> It's, so, boring,, isn't, it?, And, I, I'm, I'm

  46. 1:53

not one of those people that get my I

  47. 1:55

can't get them lasered. It's very

  48. 1:56

    boring.

  49. 1:56

    >> It's, not, boring, because, I, feel, like, now

  50. 1:59

that I can hide behind glasses, my life

  51. 2:01

has changed and also people think I'm

  52. 2:03

smarter. Anyway, hi. Nice to see you.

  53. 2:06

    Thank you for doing this.

  54. 2:08

    >> You're, so, welcome.

  55. 2:09

    >> Um, okay,, I, know, you're, in, the, middle, of

  56. 2:10

a giant press thing and we are talking

  57. 2:12

    to Olivia.

  58. 2:13

    >> Yeah,, I'm, a, little, hurt,, but, there, we

  59. 2:14

    go.

  60. 2:15

    >> I, know., Sorry, we, couldn't, get, you,, but

  61. 2:17

you uh you uh signed a restraining order

  62. 2:20

against me many years ago and you don't

  63. 2:21

let me get close to you. So

  64. 2:23

    >> that's, true., After, the, Golden, Globes,

  65. 2:24

    it's right.

  66. 2:25

    >> Okay., So,, question, for, you, before, we, get

  67. 2:28

to your question, we're asking, we like

  68. 2:29

to do this thing when we have our guests

  69. 2:31

on where we talk to people who know them

  70. 2:33

and kind of talk well behind their back.

  71. 2:35

And the first thing I just wanted to say

  72. 2:36

is that when I was doing some research

  73. 2:37

on on the film that The Roses that

  74. 2:40

you're promoting and also you and

  75. 2:41

Olivia, you guys haven't worked together

  76. 2:43

as much as I assumed you would have.

  77. 2:45

    >> We've, never, worked, together.

  78. 2:46

    >> Never.

  79. 2:47

    >> No., And, we,, you, know,, we've, been, friends

  80. 2:49

for a long time and always said we

  81. 2:51

should we should work together. And this

  82. 2:52

is what was sort of born out of that

  83. 2:54

    conversation.

  84. 2:55

    >> What, kind, of, friend, is, Olivia?

  85. 2:57

    >> Incredibly, loyal,, ridiculously, good, fun.

  86. 3:00

    Uh she facilitates naughtiness.

  87. 3:03

    Uh, she's just sort of

  88. 3:07

is it pretty naturally? Is that the

  89. 3:08

phrase? Upbeat. I mean, it's kind of

  90. 3:10

that's the one. If there's a critique of

  91. 3:12

it, it's like, how the [ __ ] is she doing

  92. 3:13

    this authentically? I don't understand

  93. 3:15

how this person can be so good at being

  94. 3:19

just upbeat and just delightful. And she

  95. 3:21

literally she this is veering into work

  96. 3:23

rather than friendship, but it's the

  97. 3:24

same with friendship. She can go into a

  98. 3:27

work environment any moment that we were

  99. 3:28

in the studio together and just you just

  100. 3:30

see everyone all the crew everyone going

  101. 3:33

everyone just lifted and brightened by

  102. 3:35

her being around. It feels it feels that

  103. 3:37

way when you watch her work and then

  104. 3:39

also be herself like and I have you know

  105. 3:42

we kind of get this we kind of came uh

  106. 3:45

or I came on to upon this theory when I

  107. 3:47

was at SNL which you were so brilliant

  108. 3:49

on is you have all these people come

  109. 3:51

through and you realize that usually the

  110. 3:55

most talented people are the easiest to

  111. 3:57

work with. Yeah, I kind of the older I

  112. 4:00

get that the more I just that's sort of

  113. 4:03

I can't be doing with people who are

  114. 4:05

hard to work. I just that's my one sort

  115. 4:07

of commodly kind of thing. I it it

  116. 4:10

    shouldn't have to be hard.

  117. 4:11

    >> Okay., And, then, the, other, thing, I, wanted

  118. 4:13

to ask you and then we'll get to your

  119. 4:14

    question. There's nothing like more

  120. 4:16

satisfying than when somebody has a

  121. 4:18

sense of humor about themselves. like

  122. 4:20

it's such a sign of intelligence like

  123. 4:23

and you and Olivia in this movie really

  124. 4:26

go at each other, your characters really

  125. 4:28

go at each other, but do you feel like

  126. 4:30

there's also just a way in which Brits

  127. 4:34

are allowed to kind of tease in a

  128. 4:36

heartier and more sharp way than than

  129. 4:39

    Americans?

  130. 4:40

    >> I, don't, know., Personally,, I, think

  131. 4:41

    there's a there's there's often a very

  132. 4:43

barbed, cruel, and slightly pinched uh

  133. 4:47

aspect to British irony. I think it

  134. 4:49

could get a bit too much to be honest.

  135. 4:50

    As an English characteristic, the

  136. 4:52

sharpness of it isn't something I find

  137. 4:54

that pleasant. It's very funny in this

  138. 4:55

film. I think also Americans and this is

  139. 4:59

obviously played up in the kind of

  140. 5:00

cultural difference. One of the key

  141. 5:01

differences between our version and the

  142. 5:03

    original Michael Douglas Turner and

  143. 5:05

Dvito film is that they're they're an

  144. 5:08

English couple in an American world and

  145. 5:10

that much later of the culture clashes

  146. 5:11

    and misunderstandings to great effect.

  147. 5:13

But they start roasting each other and

  148. 5:16

actually you as a culture I think have

  149. 5:18

    completely one uped it.

  150. 5:19

    >> You're, right., We, have, we, have, passed, you

  151. 5:21

    in the mean Olympics.

  152. 5:23

    >> You've, gone, the, dial, broken.

  153. 5:26

There's a good trade I think which evens

  154. 5:28

us out both in the gross out humor and

  155. 5:30

also the very sort of wellought through

  156. 5:32

    ironic

  157. 5:34

uh witty intellectual humor. And I I

  158. 5:37

we play up to the difference but I don't

  159. 5:39

think there is so much of a difference

  160. 5:40

    anymore. It's very interchangeable.

  161. 5:42

    >> I, agree., I, think, it's, very, hard, to, pull

  162. 5:43

off both physical comedy and really like

  163. 5:46

sharp and sarcastic wit. Both of those

  164. 5:48

things are hard to do. Well

  165. 5:49

    >> yeah., I, think, if, you, do, that,, you, could

  166. 5:51

do anything. I grew up with two parents

  167. 5:52

both actors. My mom in particular doing

  168. 5:54

you know, sort of end of the pier kind

  169. 5:56

of whoops, there go my nicker vicar's uh

  170. 5:58

nicker vicers nickers vicar uh kind of

  171. 6:01

fastes and um to the point where I was

  172. 6:03

like, "Mom, you you've got to do

  173. 6:05

something else now." Um you I can't

  174. 6:07

watch in an audience as you as a

  175. 6:10

teenager. I can't watch you come into a

  176. 6:12

room where your politician husband is

  177. 6:14

having his pants pulled down because of

  178. 6:16

something and it looks like his male

  179. 6:17

    assistant is giving him a [ __ ] and

  180. 6:19

you turn to the audience and go and then

  181. 6:21

walk off. Um, so you know, having grown

  182. 6:24

up with that kind of humor, if you can

  183. 6:26

do comedy is my point, you can do

  184. 6:27

anything. I really do believe that. And

  185. 6:29

    I'm not just

  186. 6:30

    >> of, course, I, feel

  187. 6:32

    >> you, don't, have, to, tell, me,, babe., Every

  188. 6:34

    single year at the Oscars

  189. 6:37

everybody gets blanked and all the

  190. 6:41

serious people get up and accept and

  191. 6:43

    accept and accept.

  192. 6:45

    >> No,, no,, no., It's, true.

  193. 6:46

    >> And, it's, some, hot, [ __ ]

  194. 6:49

    >> because, comedy, is, not, easy., And, I, got, to

  195. 6:52

tell you, both you and Olivia can do

  196. 6:54

    both.

  197. 6:55

    >> Oh,, well,, thank, you., Thank, you., That's

  198. 6:56

    very kind.

  199. 6:57

    >> Okay., So,, do, you, have, any, question, for

  200. 7:00

    Olivia today?

  201. 7:02

    >> Yeah., Okay., Um,

  202. 7:04

is she wearing any under? No.

  203. 7:07

Uh, is there something she's afraid of?

  204. 7:09

Because I think she's one of the most

  205. 7:10

    fearless performers that I know. I don't

  206. 7:12

see her being afraid of anything. But I

  207. 7:14

wonder if there is. I wonder.

  208. 7:16

    >> Oh,, that's, a, great, question.

  209. 7:18

    >> Yeah., And, would, she, do, it?, That's, the

  210. 7:19

other. What What are you most afraid of?

  211. 7:21

And would you would you be any good at

  212. 7:23

    facing that fear?

  213. 7:25

    >> Deep, question.

  214. 7:26

    >> I, should, be, doing, this, interview.

  215. 7:28

    >> Tough, question., Yes., I, mean,, do, you, want

  216. 7:30

to switch places here? No, just everyone

  217. 7:32

wants to hear you do the interview.

  218. 7:35

    >> Okay., Well,, I, know, you, are, in, an, hour, or

  219. 7:38

    two of a 12-hour marathon.

  220. 7:40

Congratulations on the film. Thank you

  221. 7:42

so much for doing this. I hope we get to

  222. 7:44

see each other not in full formal wear

  223. 7:47

    someday, but at an actual

  224. 7:49

    >> I, do, too., That'd, be, lovely., Much

  225. 7:50

    >> love.

  226. 7:51

    >> Thank, you, so, much,, Benedict., Appreciate

  227. 7:53

    it. Thanks for your time.

    >> Hello., Hello., Hello.

  248. 8:41

    >> Hello.

  249. 8:41

    >> Okay., Thank, you, for, coming, and, being

  250. 8:43

here so much for having me.

  251. 8:44

    >> You, know,, I, was, looking, over, um, your, uh

  252. 8:47

your life, like your timeline, cuz we're

  253. 8:49

the same age. About the same age. You

  254. 8:51

    look much younger than me.

  255. 8:53

    >> No,, you, No.

  256. 8:53

    >> No,, you, do., Actually,

  257. 8:54

    >> I'm, 50., Hold, on., I, have, to, remember., I

  258. 8:56

    was born in 71. So, I'm 50.

  259. 8:59

    >> You're, born, in

  260. 9:00

    >> I'm, 74., So,

  261. 9:01

    >> yeah., Well,, so, you're, a, little, younger

  262. 9:03

    than me, so

  263. 9:03

    >> Well,, I, look, older.

  264. 9:04

    >> No,, you, do.

  265. 9:06

    >> Americans, just, look, better,

  266. 9:07

    >> do, you, think?

  267. 9:08

    >> Yeah.

  268. 9:08

    >> Well,, British, people, seem, smarter,, so

  269. 9:11

    everything out.

  270. 9:14

    >> You'll, find, out, that's, not, true.

  271. 9:15

    >> And, you'll, find, out, and, when, you, get, a

  272. 9:17

little closer. Okay. So, but we but you

  273. 9:21

know we kind of have some parallels

  274. 9:23

because you met a lot of your friends

  275. 9:25

    and co-workers

  276. 9:28

    at Foot Lights.

  277. 9:29

    >> Yeah., Kind, of, you, know, you, went, to, this

  278. 9:32

    very

  279. 9:34

important place that we Americans used

  280. 9:36

    to hear about.

  281. 9:37

    >> Yes., I, will, um, I, wasn't, actually, at, the

  282. 9:39

university but this was this is

  283. 9:40

    something that gets regularly.

  284. 9:42

    >> You, were, not, at, Cambridge., I, was, in, the

  285. 9:44

    town of Cambridge

  286. 9:46

    >> working, as, a, cleaner, and, um

  287. 9:48

    >> very, interesting.

  288. 9:49

    >> So, yes,, you, get, well, I, did, I, was, at, the

  289. 9:53

teacher training college for about a

  290. 9:55

    term I think and left

  291. 9:58

    >> and, then, no, one, questioned, me, cuz, I, had

  292. 10:00

a bicycle and I looked the same as

  293. 10:02

everyone else same age. So I just would

  294. 10:05

turn up to things and they

  295. 10:06

    >> and, was, there, like, an, auditioning

  296. 10:08

process to get into Foot Lights?

  297. 10:09

    >> Yes., And, that's, where, I, met, my, lovely

  298. 10:11

    friends who then basically were

  299. 10:13

responsible for me getting work for

  300. 10:15

    years afterwards.

  301. 10:16

    >> Yeah., Because

  302. 10:17

    >> but, I, just, feel, very, it, feels, like, a, big

  303. 10:19

lie if I guys at Cambridge.

  304. 10:20

    >> Absolutely.

  305. 10:21

    >> This, is, already, very, British., The

  306. 10:22

distinction that you didn't go to school

  307. 10:23

there is is an important one for you.

  308. 10:25

    >> Yeah., Well,, I, feel, like, people, who, were

  309. 10:27

there would go, "No, you didn't." And

  310. 10:28

    you know, it's I think it's so

  311. 10:31

impressive to have worked so hard and be

  312. 10:33

so clever to get there. It would be a

  313. 10:36

bit much if with my terrible A levels I

  314. 10:39

I suggested that I got in.

  315. 10:41

    >> So, people, that, were, not, going, there

  316. 10:43

could go could be in the in could

  317. 10:45

    perform there.

  318. 10:46

    >> Yes., I, think, I, just, I, didn't, lie,, but, I

  319. 10:50

    just certainly didn't tell anyone.

  320. 10:52

    >> So, it, can, be, taken, back., You, could, be

  321. 10:54

technically arrested for Yeah. at some

  322. 10:56

    point.

  323. 10:57

    >> Maybe.

  324. 10:59

So you go and you a Do you remember what

  325. 11:01

how you had to audition for

  326. 11:02

    >> I, do, remember, going, I, was, in, there, was, a

  327. 11:04

building called the Union Society and

  328. 11:07

this is when I did have my student card

  329. 11:09

because I was actually at the teacher

  330. 11:11

training thingy and uh and there was a

  331. 11:14

sign it was handwritten in bro on a the

  332. 11:16

audition arrow. Oh fun. So I went along

  333. 11:20

and I didn't know it was the footlights

  334. 11:22

    and um I know and I'm pleased I didn't

  335. 11:25

    know.

  336. 11:26

    >> Yeah., And, they, were, they, were, boys

  337. 11:29

looking bored sitting behind a desk and

  338. 11:32

said entertainers will sell something to

  339. 11:34

us that looks like this isn't food. I

  340. 11:36

    went okay.

  341. 11:38

    >> So, there, was, a, disgusting, ashtray, which

  342. 11:41

must have been there for years and I

  343. 11:43

picked up a fact but that sounds weird

  344. 11:46

    in American English.

  345. 11:48

    >> Cigarette, butt

  346. 11:49

    >> cigarette, end., And, um, and, I, tried, to

  347. 11:54

sell it and it wasn't going very well.

  348. 11:56

No one was laughing, so I ate it

  349. 11:59

under desperation. And they still didn't

  350. 12:02

    laugh. They just looked absolutely

  351. 12:03

horrified. But they they let me in

  352. 12:04

because they thought, well, she's she's

  353. 12:06

game. She's she's going to do some funny

  354. 12:08

    stuff.

  355. 12:08

    >> What, is, it, going, to, take, to, get, those

  356. 12:09

    guys to laugh?

  357. 12:10

    >> Yeah.

  358. 12:12

Um that is so that's so that's such a

  359. 12:15

great story. And then you got in and

  360. 12:18

then you met all these like what you

  361. 12:19

    know I I

  362. 12:21

    >> that, that, time, period, in, my, life, I, know

  363. 12:24

doing sketch and improv and all that

  364. 12:26

    stuff for

  365. 12:28

    >> a, small, number, of, people, with, friends, in

  366. 12:30

the hopes that someday you could do more

  367. 12:32

    of it

  368. 12:32

    >> like, what, do, you, remember, of, those

  369. 12:34

    times?

  370. 12:34

    >> Well, I, because, obviously, as, you, know, you

  371. 12:37

all had to help write and everything. I

  372. 12:39

was terrible at the writing. Uh, I just

  373. 12:41

really enjoyed performing and uh, being

  374. 12:44

on stage and making people laugh was

  375. 12:46

like the best like crack, like the best

  376. 12:48

    thing.

  377. 12:49

    >> It, is., I, I, said, it, for, me, it, was, the

  378. 12:50

closest feeling to being a vampire

  379. 12:53

    >> where, you, just, like, I'm, becoming, a

  380. 12:56

    vampire.

  381. 12:56

    >> Yeah.

  382. 12:58

    >> Oh,, I've, got, goosebumps., I, totally

  383. 12:59

    understand.

  384. 13:00

    >> Just, you're, like,, look, what, I've, done.

  385. 13:02

    Like just this weird

  386. 13:05

    >> powerful, in, control, flush, of, excitement.

  387. 13:09

    >> Yeah., Yeah.

  388. 13:10

    >> And, so, desperate, to, get, that, back, and

  389. 13:12

    >> yes,, your, whole, life, is, chasing, it

  390. 13:14

    again.

  391. 13:14

    >> What, was, the, first, you, remember, the

  392. 13:16

feeling of like the first big laugh, you

  393. 13:18

know, where you where you did something

  394. 13:21

and you watched people laugh at you and

  395. 13:23

you thought, "Oh, I love this feeling."

  396. 13:24

    >> I, don't, know if, I, can, remember, that.

  397. 13:26

    >> No.

  398. 13:27

    >> Were, you, in, plays, as, a, kid?

  399. 13:29

    >> I, did, my, first, ever, school, play, when, I

  400. 13:31

was 16 and that was that was the prime

  401. 13:33

of Miss Jean Broaddy. not a comedy, but

  402. 13:36

um I just remember people clapping at

  403. 13:38

the end and I'd always been so rubbish

  404. 13:42

    at school.

  405. 13:43

    >> I'd, never, I, sort, of, oh, I, couldn't, wait

  406. 13:45

for it to finish, you know, doesn't

  407. 13:46

really I'd look out the window and found

  408. 13:48

it really hard to concentrate and

  409. 13:50

    >> and, then, suddenly, I, I, committed, to

  410. 13:53

learning all of these lines. Suddenly I

  411. 13:56

why couldn't I learn other stuff? that I

  412. 13:58

would do that and then when they clapped

  413. 14:00

that was the moment when I went

  414. 14:03

    >> I, love, it.

  415. 14:04

    >> It, was, like, it, was, like, electricity

  416. 14:06

coming out of your fingertips like get

  417. 14:07

    off get off. No.

  418. 14:11

    >> Loved, it.

  419. 14:12

    >> Yeah., I, mean, do, you, consider, yourself, a

  420. 14:14

were you an extroverted kid? Like were

  421. 14:16

you were you are people um not surprised

  422. 14:20

that you ended up being an actor or

  423. 14:23

    >> don't, know., So,, I, think, it's, quite, I

  424. 14:24

think as I've got older, I've got more

  425. 14:26

and more shy in a way. And I I think

  426. 14:28

people knowing your face and you not

  427. 14:30

    knowing their face

  428. 14:31

    >> puts, you, in, a, you, know,

  429. 14:33

    >> it's, an, not, an, equal, footing.

  430. 14:36

    >> I, really, relate, to, what, you're, saying

  431. 14:37

about even though I think people might

  432. 14:40

think that's funny that both of us are

  433. 14:41

saying this, but getting a little shy as

  434. 14:44

    you get older.

  435. 14:45

    >> Totally.

  436. 14:46

    >> I, really, relate, to, that., What, do, you

  437. 14:48

think that is? I I think it is

  438. 14:51

well as you know as I said that it's

  439. 14:54

    it's an unequal thing. So I love I don't

  440. 14:57

know if, you, ever, go, to, a, country, where

  441. 14:59

    maybe your shows aren't seen.

  442. 15:00

    >> Oh, yeah., It's, called, the, UK.

  443. 15:05

    >> That's, not, true., But, you, know, well, if, if

  444. 15:08

you can walk feel like you can walk down

  445. 15:10

the street and no one has done a double

  446. 15:11

take or a nudge or a secret photo.

  447. 15:14

    >> Yeah.

  448. 15:14

    >> It, feels, amazing.

  449. 15:15

    >> Yes.

  450. 15:16

    >> I, love, that.

  451. 15:17

    >> Yeah., Being, observed, is, weird, because

  452. 15:21

especially it sounds like you're like

  453. 15:22

you you you are an observer. You like to

  454. 15:24

observe people. So when you're being

  455. 15:26

    observed, it's a strange feeling.

  456. 15:27

    >> Yeah., I, find, it, discomforting, and, it

  457. 15:30

means I don't want to go anywhere with

  458. 15:31

    my children.

  459. 15:32

    >> I, don't, want, people, to,, you, know,, see

  460. 15:35

    who they are.

  461. 15:35

    >> Yeah.

  462. 15:36

    >> It's, their, decision, to, to, do, what, they

  463. 15:39

want to do with their lives. Not

  464. 15:40

    >> um

  465. 15:41

    >> and, kids, don't, like, it, doesn't, even, you

  466. 15:43

don't even have to be an actor. Kids

  467. 15:44

just don't like sharing their parents

  468. 15:46

    with people.

  469. 15:46

    >> Yeah., I, do, understand, that.

  470. 15:48

    >> Yeah,, I, know., And, it's, it's, hard, to

  471. 15:51

explain to them that that is your work

  472. 15:53

but it is it is it's a universal

  473. 15:55

feeling. The kids do kids want their

  474. 15:56

    parents when they want them.

  475. 15:58

    >> Mine., Yeah., And

  476. 16:00

    >> I've, been, lucky, compared, to, many, people

  477. 16:02

in our industry. I I haven't had to be

  478. 16:04

    away from home that much.

  479. 16:06

    >> Yeah.

  480. 16:06

    >> And, uh, and, my, youngest,, so, in, recent

  481. 16:10

years, I've had to be about way a bit

  482. 16:12

more. And she hates it. M I sort of love

  483. 16:15

    it actually. But

  484. 16:16

    >> yeah,, she's, still, missing, you.

  485. 16:21

    >> How, old, is, your, youngest?

  486. 16:22

    >> Yeah., Uh, youngest, is, 10.

  487. 16:23

    >> Okay., Okay., Right., So, you, still, have

  488. 16:26

    >> Yeah.

  489. 16:26

    >> some, sweetness, there.

  490. 16:27

    >> Yeah.

  491. 16:28

    >> Yeah., And, really, she's, really, lovely.

  492. 16:30

    They're all lovely.

  493. 16:31

    >> I, know., Does, anyone, any, of, them, want, to

  494. 16:32

    be an actor?

  495. 16:33

    >> No., Furious.

  496. 16:35

    >> Yeah.

  497. 16:35

    >> Livid, with, them.

  498. 16:36

    >> Yeah.

  499. 16:37

    >> You, know,

  500. 16:37

    >> I'm, like, get, up, there, and, earn, some

  501. 16:39

    money for this family.

  502. 16:40

    >> Just, I, So, they, laugh, at, me, cuz, Yeah., Um,

  503. 16:44

it's a bit, you know, ab fab.

  504. 16:47

    >> And, my, big, boy,, uh,, wants, to, be, a

  505. 16:49

    physicist.

  506. 16:49

    >> Wow.

  507. 16:50

    >> I, mean,, just

  508. 16:51

    >> incredible.

  509. 16:51

    >> He, can, also,, that's, the, only, way, he, can

  510. 16:53

rebel with you and your husband.

  511. 16:55

    >> Totally., He, goes,, "Mom,, no, one, says,

  512. 16:57

"Oh, why can't you be a rockstar?"

  513. 17:00

    >> I, do.

  514. 17:02

    >> They're, all, so, sensible.

  515. 17:04

    >> Yeah., Physicist, is

  516. 17:05

    >> physicist.

  517. 17:06

    >> That's, smart.

  518. 17:07

    >> I, mean,, who, employs, physicists

  519. 17:09

    >> these, days?, No, one.

  520. 17:11

    >> No, one., see

  521. 17:12

    >> with, long, hair., Forget, it., He's, never

  522. 17:14

going to get through the door.

  523. 17:16

    >> Okay., So,, you're, at, you're, at, Foot

  524. 17:17

Lights, you're making all these friends

  525. 17:19

you're deciding. You know what I love

  526. 17:21

about your career and you is that you

  527. 17:24

you are the ultimate to me proof that

  528. 17:27

when someone can do comedy really well

  529. 17:30

they can do anything. And I guess you

  530. 17:33

came into the business doing comedy.

  531. 17:36

When was was it Tyrannosaur that

  532. 17:39

    switched? Was that

  533. 17:40

    >> Yeah., Do, can, you, talk, about, that, film

  534. 17:42

and and getting cast in that?

  535. 17:44

    >> Yeah., So,, comedy, I, I'd, never, intended., I

  536. 17:48

just found a place there and I really

  537. 17:50

    loved it.

  538. 17:51

    >> And, um, I'd, always, imagined, maybe

  539. 17:56

uh from from that first play at school

  540. 17:58

I thought maybe I could be an actor, but

  541. 17:59

you didn't dare say it out loud.

  542. 18:01

    >> Yeah.

  543. 18:01

    >> And, and, then, it, felt, like, there, were, two

  544. 18:05

lists of actors. There's funny ones, not

  545. 18:07

funny ones, and you can't cross over.

  546. 18:09

    >> Absolutely, not, allowed.

  547. 18:10

    >> No., And, it, takes, someone, to,, you, know,

  548. 18:12

to really put their neck on the line to

  549. 18:14

go, "No, I would like them to do that."

  550. 18:16

So, it was Patty Considine I met when we

  551. 18:18

    were doing uh Hot Fuzz.

  552. 18:20

    >> Yes.

  553. 18:20

    >> I, was, so, excited, to, meet, him, and, I

  554. 18:23

opened the door and grinned at him.

  555. 18:25

Hello. And and he decided in that

  556. 18:28

moment, oh, she's she'll be right for my

  557. 18:29

    film.

  558. 18:30

    >> Wow.

  559. 18:30

    >> I, know.

  560. 18:32

    >> So,, always, open, the, door,, people., Always

  561. 18:34

    be nice. You never know.

  562. 18:36

    >> Wow., And, it, was, it, totally, changed, the

  563. 18:39

trajectory. It's a word I find hard to

  564. 18:41

    do. Um of my career

  565. 18:43

    >> because, it, went, to, Sundance, and, it, was

  566. 18:44

like this, you know, very lauded

  567. 18:46

performance and people saw this version

  568. 18:49

of you basically and they said "Oh, we

  569. 18:51

    can I know. It's very

  570. 18:54

It's Isn't it interesting how life is

  571. 18:57

    just

  572. 18:59

just the smallest changes and moves in

  573. 19:01

your life when you're and you're on

  574. 19:03

    another track?"

  575. 19:04

    >> Yeah,, totally., and, so, often, having, to

  576. 19:06

    wait for someone else to

  577. 19:08

    >> Yeah.

  578. 19:08

    >> to, to, you, know, let, that, happen, for, you

  579. 19:10

    which is frustrating.

  580. 19:12

    >> Yeah.

  581. 19:12

    >> But, I'm, so, grateful, to, Patty.

  582. 19:14

    >> Do, you, ever, think, to, yourself, like, I'm

  583. 19:16

in the mood right now to do something

  584. 19:18

heavier? I'm in the mood right now to do

  585. 19:20

something lighter. Do you think about

  586. 19:21

    that when you're picking stuff?

  587. 19:23

    >> You, know, like

  588. 19:24

    >> I, don't, know if, I, might, do

  589. 19:24

subconsciously. I always used to rely

  590. 19:26

very much on gut feeling. Yeah. You know

  591. 19:29

um and I feel a bit like I've lost that

  592. 19:32

ability. I've gone a little bit.

  593. 19:34

    >> I, don't, know, if, that, happens, as, well, as

  594. 19:35

    we get older, but

  595. 19:36

    >> I, sometimes, think, I, think, I've

  596. 19:38

    >> I, can't, tell, now.

  597. 19:40

    >> If, a, my, agent, has, a, great, litmus, test,

  598. 19:42

so if you read it and you're unsure um

  599. 19:46

if your nemesis gets the part, are you

  600. 19:49

    going to want to

  601. 19:51

    >> you, know,, pull, your, hair, out?, And

  602. 19:53

    >> it's, so, funny., I, think, about, that,, too.

  603. 19:54

If I saw it a year later, like a trailer

  604. 19:57

for it, and I was jealous.

  605. 19:59

    >> Yeah.

  606. 20:00

    >> If, I, thought, if, I, saw, something, go,

  607. 20:01

okay. I can let this go or no, I have to

  608. 20:04

    fight for it.

  609. 20:04

    >> Yeah., Yeah., But, um, but

  610. 20:07

    >> sorry,, I, didn't, answer, your, question, at

  611. 20:08

all., Did, I? I, did, I, go, somewhere, else?

  612. 20:09

    >> Well,, I, Well,, what, why, I, I, ask, is

  613. 20:12

because you've been in all of my

  614. 20:14

favorite things and when we look at all

  615. 20:16

of the stuff that you've been in, your

  616. 20:17

career is incredible, Olivia. like you

  617. 20:19

    have done.

  618. 20:20

    >> Okay., But, I, want, to, stay, with, comedy, for

  619. 20:22

a second just because I feel like

  620. 20:24

    >> and, I, kind, of, made, a, joke, about, it

  621. 20:26

earlier, but there is this thing our

  622. 20:28

    with people our age where

  623. 20:30

    >> the, US, and, UK, were

  624. 20:33

    >> so, connected, in, so, many, ways, but, had

  625. 20:34

    completely different comedic

  626. 20:36

experiences. There were only a few shows

  627. 20:38

in my opinion that came over to us.

  628. 20:40

    >> Yeah.

  629. 20:41

    >> Like, it, wasn't, until, I, was, in, my, 20s, and

  630. 20:42

30s that I learned about all this great

  631. 20:45

British comedy that I never got to see.

  632. 20:47

    >> Okay., And, I,, you, know,, you, know,, we, got

  633. 20:51

kind of the big ones, right, growing

  634. 20:52

like Money Python and, you know, Ab Fab

  635. 20:56

and stuff like that, but then there was

  636. 20:57

this huge amount of shows that we never

  637. 21:00

saw that you had to kind of search and

  638. 21:02

find out and watch on, you know, VHS and

  639. 21:05

    like trade with your friends.

  640. 21:06

    >> Yeah.

  641. 21:08

Did you have shows here in the States

  642. 21:10

that you didn't know about or didn't

  643. 21:12

watch that you had to kind of catch up

  644. 21:15

and know about once you started becoming

  645. 21:17

    >> weirdly, sort, of, SNL, which, is, a, you, know

  646. 21:20

    >> it's, it's, like, a, little, comedy, heaven.

  647. 21:23

Um I didn't know about that for so long

  648. 21:25

cuz I I don't think it was shown on

  649. 21:27

television in the UK. No. And it was

  650. 21:30

only funny friends who were obsessed

  651. 21:32

with it and went what why what is it and

  652. 21:35

then started to to look at it

  653. 21:37

    >> because, this, is, pre-, internet, like, we

  654. 21:38

couldn't Google anything. We didn't have

  655. 21:40

    this, high-tech, stuff., I, have, I, have a

  656. 21:42

    laptop on my

  657. 21:44

    >> and, that's, very, cool, and, I, can, type, in

  658. 21:45

    anything you want to know.

  659. 21:48

    >> You, want, to, know, the, recipe, to, something

  660. 21:50

but yeah but you couldn't clip anything

  661. 21:52

you couldn't watching. So I remember

  662. 21:53

watching like Alan Partridge and all

  663. 21:55

this stuff on VHS, but 10 years after it

  664. 21:59

    was on.

  665. 21:59

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Well,, it's, the, same., Well,

  666. 22:01

we got and we still have, which I love

  667. 22:04

um, every weekday morning on channel 4

  668. 22:06

they have starts with Cheers, um, then

  669. 22:09

King of Queens, then Everybody Loved

  670. 22:10

Raymond, then Friends, uh, no, sorry

  671. 22:13

    Frasier.

  672. 22:14

    >> Same, four, shows.

  673. 22:15

    >> Yeah,, I, love, it.

  674. 22:17

    >> Oh, my, god., Cheers.

  675. 22:18

    >> Oh, my, god., How, good, is

  676. 22:19

    >> Cheers?

  677. 22:21

How good is that show? Oh

  678. 22:22

    >> it's, so, good., Ted, Dansson, at, his, hottest

  679. 22:25

    best

  680. 22:26

    >> and, the, and, and, um, Sam, and, Diane, the, I

  681. 22:30

    mean actually there's a we'll get to

  682. 22:33

your film The Roses, but there's a lot

  683. 22:34

of that kind of like that kind of back

  684. 22:37

and forth reparte of I love you, I hate

  685. 22:40

you, I love you. So satisfying

  686. 22:42

    >> so, good.

  687. 22:42

    >> And, when, they, kissed, for, the, first, time

  688. 22:44

    and millions watched.

  689. 22:46

    >> I, know., And, and, also, that

  690. 22:49

    >> lovely, Woody., I, loved, Woody, and, he, and

  691. 22:51

and and Woody who had the hardest job in

  692. 22:54

the world cuz he took over

  693. 22:56

    >> for, coach, who

  694. 22:57

    >> Oh, yes,, of, course.

  695. 22:58

    >> Yes., Who, was, an, amazing, character,

  696. 23:01

    >> sadly, passed, away, year, one, or, two, and

  697. 23:04

you thought, well, they're just can't

  698. 23:05

    cover that.

  699. 23:06

    >> And, then, they, bring, in, Woody

  700. 23:09

    >> who, just, crushes, it., And, then, the, pilot

  701. 23:12

of Cheers, if you've ever read, is just

  702. 23:15

a perfectly written pilot and we and me

  703. 23:16

and Mike Sher, the creator of Parks and

  704. 23:18

Rec, used to talk about it all the time

  705. 23:19

cuz you have like seven characters you

  706. 23:21

have to, you know, service really fast

  707. 23:24

    basically.

  708. 23:25

    >> And, it's, such, a, good, pilot., I, love, that

  709. 23:27

    joke.

  710. 23:27

    >> Oh, my, god,, I've, got, to, watch, the, pilot.

  711. 23:28

    I'm going to find it.

  712. 23:29

    >> It's, so, good., And, the, ending, of, Cheers.

  713. 23:31

    >> Yeah.

  714. 23:33

    >> Okay., I, Everyone, loves, Raymond, Frasier

  715. 23:37

and what was the other one?

  716. 23:39

    >> King, of, Queens., King, of, Queens.

  717. 23:41

    >> Yeah.

  718. 23:42

    >> And, you're, like,, what, is, this, queens?

  719. 23:44

What what do I need to know?

  720. 23:45

    >> I've, got, no, idea, what, that, is,

  721. 23:47

    >> but, he, is, king, of, it.

  722. 23:52

    >> Yeah., There, was, so, there, was, a, few

  723. 23:53

things that came over to us, but not a

  724. 23:55

lot. You know, it took me and and sketch

  725. 23:58

    was one

  726. 23:59

    >> like, I, didn't, know, about, French, and

  727. 24:00

Saunders until 10 years after, you know

  728. 24:04

then everyone same like funny people and

  729. 24:07

    I was meeting funny people

  730. 24:09

    >> and, they, were, talking, about, shows, that, I

  731. 24:11

like had to research. But I just think

  732. 24:13

    it's very interesting because

  733. 24:15

    >> that, we're, we, are, we, are, so, alike, but

  734. 24:18

our comedy was very specific and

  735. 24:20

different. We had the um premiere last

  736. 24:22

night in New York of the Roses and then

  737. 24:24

we got the London premiere on Thursday

  738. 24:26

and lots of I wonder if audiences will

  739. 24:28

laugh at different things and I feel

  740. 24:30

    like that's not true anymore.

  741. 24:31

    >> I, agree., Maybe., Yeah,

  742. 24:33

    >> I, don't, think, that's, true.

  743. 24:34

    >> No,, I, think, we, all, totally, understand

  744. 24:35

each other and we'll find the same [ __ ]

  745. 24:37

    funny.

  746. 24:37

    >> We, were, laughing., We, were, we, when, we

  747. 24:39

were preparing for this interview, we

  748. 24:40

    were saying like how

  749. 24:42

    >> you, know, it, is, true., We, believe, that, the

  750. 24:44

Brits are smarter. They just sound

  751. 24:46

    smarter.

  752. 24:46

    >> Yeah,, they, do.

  753. 24:47

    >> It's, not, true.

  754. 24:48

    >> I, know., And, you, know, what, taught, us?

  755. 24:50

    Love Island.

  756. 24:52

    >> I've, said, that's, the, first, time, I've

  757. 24:54

ever been grateful to Love Island.

  758. 24:56

    >> They, taught, us, that

  759. 24:58

    >> cuz, I, can, see, people, look, disappointed

  760. 24:59

when I open my mouth and I go, "Oh, see

  761. 25:01

you think I'm clever. I'm really not."

  762. 25:03

    But thank god Love Island.

  763. 25:04

    >> Yeah,, Love, Island, really, leveled, the

  764. 25:06

playing field. We were like, I see.

  765. 25:08

Okay, we're all the same. We're all the

  766. 25:10

    same.

  767. 25:18

But a show that I've since now seen that

  768. 25:20

I didn't know at the time was Bruiser

  769. 25:22

    >> which, was, like, your, first

  770. 25:23

    >> Have, you, seen, Bruiser?

  771. 25:25

    >> Well,, I've, seen, clips, of, Bruiser.

  772. 25:27

    >> Okay.

  773. 25:27

    >> But, Bruiser, was, like, your, first, sketch

  774. 25:30

    show.

  775. 25:31

    >> First, ever, job., My, first, job.

  776. 25:32

    >> First, ever, job.

  777. 25:33

    >> And, that, was, How, old, were, you?, What

  778. 25:35

    year?

  779. 25:35

    >> It, was, my, last, year, of, drama, school., I

  780. 25:37

have a weird thing where I can't do

  781. 25:38

    dates.

  782. 25:39

    >> Same.

  783. 25:39

    >> So, I, know, I, did, my, A, levels, in, 1992

  784. 25:42

because I had to say it so often.

  785. 25:44

    >> Yeah.

  786. 25:44

    >> But, I, beyond, that, I'm, not, entirely, sure

  787. 25:46

what happened. So, in the '9s

  788. 25:48

    >> in, the, '90s,

  789. 25:49

    >> comes, out.

  790. 25:50

    >> Yes.

  791. 25:50

    >> And, it's, you, and, and, David, and

  792. 25:53

    >> David, Mitchell,, Rob, Webb,, Martin

  793. 25:55

    Freeman.

  794. 25:56

    >> Yeah,, that's, right.

  795. 25:56

    >> Charlotte, Hudson.

  796. 25:57

    >> And, that's, just, like, sketches, and, you're

  797. 26:00

all look like babies and you're all

  798. 26:02

    doing like

  799. 26:04

    >> Yeah,, I, go, I, haven't, seen, it., I, I, bet

  800. 26:07

    lots of it's terrible.

  801. 26:08

    >> Well,, sketches.

  802. 26:09

    >> Yeah.

  803. 26:10

    >> I, mean,, badly., like, the, batting

  804. 26:13

averages, you have just like hope for a

  805. 26:15

    couple of winners. Like

  806. 26:16

    >> Mitch, Web, have, just, done, a, new, sketch

  807. 26:18

show and sketch shows just haven't

  808. 26:20

    happened for a long time.

  809. 26:21

    >> I, know., I, know., I, know., I, think, about

  810. 26:23

that a lot. I mean, for me, the best

  811. 26:26

last sketch show other than SNL that

  812. 26:28

I've seen is Key and Peele. Did you

  813. 26:30

    watch Key and Peele?

  814. 26:31

    >> My, boys, were, talking, about, that.

  815. 26:33

    >> I, think, that, that, the, Brits, don't, know

  816. 26:34

about Key and Peele as much, but that

  817. 26:36

was a big show over here.

  818. 26:38

    >> Um,, and, they, were, just, like, deeply, funny

  819. 26:41

and good. like they were really really

  820. 26:42

    >> going, to, find, them.

  821. 26:43

    >> Um, okay., And, so, then, um, Okay., But, then

  822. 26:48

    >> there's, this, there's, all, this, stuff, you

  823. 26:50

    do between

  824. 26:52

    >> you, know, broad, church, basically., There's

  825. 26:54

all this stuff because that broad church

  826. 26:56

for us is really I think when we really

  827. 26:59

start to get to know you. I remember you

  828. 27:01

from your little moment in the office

  829. 27:02

because I the UK office because I was

  830. 27:04

obsessed with UK office and and the and

  831. 27:07

the um the picture moment with David and

  832. 27:09

just and with with Ricky but we get to

  833. 27:13

really know you and you and David at the

  834. 27:16

    same time.

  835. 27:16

    >> Oh, yeah,, lovely, DT.

  836. 27:18

    >> Lovely., Tell, me, about, your, relation., You

  837. 27:20

    guys are buddies.

  838. 27:21

    >> Oh,, I, love, David, Penant.

  839. 27:22

    >> I, know., He, seems, so, I'd, love, to, meet

  840. 27:25

    him.

  841. 27:25

    >> Nice., You, love, him.

  842. 27:26

    >> Tell, me, why, he's, so, great., He, is

  843. 27:31

there's nothing assholy about him at

  844. 27:34

    all.

  845. 27:35

    >> And, he, we, simply, just, would, sit, and, talk

  846. 27:38

about we do farts in the police car and

  847. 27:41

    he'd go Jesus Christ

  848. 27:44

and and he was just like a buddy and

  849. 27:48

we'd tell stories and he he wanted to be

  850. 27:51

at home with his no wife and family and

  851. 27:53

I wanted to be at home. Yes. Isn't it

  852. 27:56

the best when you work with people who

  853. 27:57

    want to be at home?

  854. 27:58

    >> Yeah.

  855. 27:59

    >> Get, this, done., Get, it, done, early., You're

  856. 28:01

not afraid. You get home. Get [ __ ] off

  857. 28:03

    about home.

  858. 28:04

    >> And

  859. 28:06

also he was so always knew his lines was

  860. 28:08

always on it. Always just just beautiful

  861. 28:10

at his fingertips. And then uh you know

  862. 28:13

when the ad comes to knock on the door I

  863. 28:15

could we both we had a two two-way it's

  864. 28:17

not as rude as it sounds you know the uh

  865. 28:19

van with but also our lose were back to

  866. 28:22

back and I going to go David are you in

  867. 28:25

there go stop listening to me

  868. 28:29

I'm doing the same with you and um but

  869. 28:32

when the ad would come and knock on door

  870. 28:34

say it's time we would try and race each

  871. 28:35

other he would always didn't want to

  872. 28:36

delay anyone he was never late

  873. 28:40

and just gorgeous. Everybody loved him

  874. 28:44

    but just real. And

  875. 28:46

    >> it, it, proves, my, point,, Olivia., I've, said

  876. 28:48

before, I find that for the most part

  877. 28:50

with the exception of a few eccentric

  878. 28:53

    original performers

  879. 28:55

    >> the, most, talented, people, are, often, the

  880. 28:58

    most professional. Like, they're the

  881. 28:59

    easiest to work with.

  882. 29:01

    >> And, I've, been, so, lucky, to, work, with, two

  883. 29:03

of my gods, Merrill Stre and Anthony

  884. 29:06

Hopkins. They never would have kept

  885. 29:08

    anyone waiting. Yes.

  886. 29:10

    >> And, then, you, learn, from, that, you, go, see.

  887. 29:12

    >> No., And, they, set, such, a, tone.

  888. 29:14

    >> Yes.

  889. 29:15

    >> They, know, they, are, polite, to, everyone.

  890. 29:16

They know everyone's name. They know

  891. 29:17

their job. They know their lines.

  892. 29:19

    They're always on time.

  893. 29:20

    >> I, I, mean, I, have, a, in, any, profession, I, do

  894. 29:22

have a theory that like people that are

  895. 29:24

acting out of fear or afraid that this

  896. 29:26

is their last good idea or that you know

  897. 29:28

it a lot of people act out for a lot of

  898. 29:30

    reasons. Yeah. But

  899. 29:32

    >> and, I, do, understand, that.

  900. 29:33

    >> I, do, too., And, as, I, get, older, also, people

  901. 29:35

    just work differently. But the

  902. 29:37

    professional part

  903. 29:38

    >> when, you, meet, some, your, hero, and, they

  904. 29:40

also are that way. It's just the best.

  905. 29:42

    >> It's, so, important.

  906. 29:44

    >> Yeah.

  907. 29:44

    >> And, just, a, friend, recently, did, a, show

  908. 29:47

and I don't want to sort of

  909. 29:50

    >> there, are, some, of, the, younger, people.

  910. 29:52

    >> Yes.

  911. 29:52

    >> Who, I, I, don't, know, where, it, comes, from

  912. 29:55

    but um

  913. 29:56

    >> if, they, have, a, little, bit, of, a, cold, they

  914. 29:57

    won't do the show.

  915. 29:58

    >> Oh.

  916. 29:59

    >> And, I, don't, understand.

  917. 30:00

    >> Right.

  918. 30:01

    >> When, we, were, told

  919. 30:03

    >> this, is, very, Gen, X, of, us., You, know, that

  920. 30:04

    >> I'm, I'm, aware, that, I, am, doing, that.

  921. 30:06

    >> Same., Which, is, the, way., And, people

  922. 30:08

    >> think, it's, their, fault,, but, someone, has

  923. 30:09

    told them wrong.

  924. 30:11

    >> Well,, okay,, let's, get, into, this, because

  925. 30:14

    no,

  926. 30:15

    >> I'm, going, to, be, cancelled.

  927. 30:16

    >> No,, I, agree., And, I'm, trying, to, work, on

  928. 30:18

it because here are the two things.

  929. 30:21

    >> I, think, that, we, were, sold, a, productivity

  930. 30:24

    myth.

  931. 30:25

    >> Yeah.

  932. 30:25

    >> Right., Like, hustle,, hustle,, hustle.

  933. 30:27

    Yeah.

  934. 30:27

    >> And, it's, really, ingrained, in, us., Like

  935. 30:30

there's no way I would have ever called

  936. 30:32

in sick. I mean, I remember doing a

  937. 30:34

scene with Alec Baldwin for a movie and

  938. 30:36

I had like 104 temperature and I had we

  939. 30:38

    had to cry

  940. 30:40

    >> and, I, was, like, I, I, was, on, another, planet

  941. 30:42

and he was like where wherever you are

  942. 30:45

stay there perfect and I was like I am

  943. 30:47

in I'm in a fever dream. I have 104 and

  944. 30:50

I remember just being completely but

  945. 30:52

never in a million years ever would I

  946. 30:54

    >> in, retrospect, potentially, maybe, was, a

  947. 30:56

    day to not be

  948. 30:57

    >> potentially, Yeah., potentially, not, a, good

  949. 30:59

    choice.

  950. 30:59

    >> Yeah., So,, I, kind, of, understand, that, this

  951. 31:02

idea of like maybe take care of

  952. 31:04

yourself, Gen Xers, a little bit more

  953. 31:06

than you did and not pressure everybody

  954. 31:08

    to hustle.

  955. 31:09

    >> But, perhaps, we've, overcorrected.

  956. 31:11

    >> I, think, there's, a, happy, medium,, isn't

  957. 31:13

    there?

  958. 31:13

    >> Agree.

  959. 31:14

    >> But, a, little, bit, of, a, of, a, tickle, in, in

  960. 31:16

the back and you go, I don't think I

  961. 31:19

    can. That's I don't think that's okay.

  962. 31:21

    >> Yeah.

  963. 31:22

    >> I've, had, pneumonia, twice., Never, missed, a

  964. 31:24

    day of work while filming.

  965. 31:25

    >> Okay.

  966. 31:26

    >> But, also, potentially, stupid.

  967. 31:28

    >> You've, had, pneumonia, while, filming?

  968. 31:29

Yeah. Yeah. Amazing. You're my kind of

  969. 31:32

    gal.

  970. 31:32

    >> Thank, you., I, never, missed, one, day, of

  971. 31:35

work on Parks and Wreck. I did 120

  972. 31:38

    shows.

  973. 31:39

    >> [ __ ], yeah.

  974. 31:40

    >> And, that's, weird., And, people, think

  975. 31:42

    that's a weird statistic because they're

  976. 31:44

like, well, okay, maybe maybe not

  977. 31:47

something to brag about. And I'm like

  978. 31:49

    is it not?

  979. 31:49

    >> I, think, it, is.

  980. 31:51

    >> I, agree., But, perhaps, I, was, setting, an

  981. 31:54

example that was, you know, there's

  982. 31:56

there's there's Both are true. Both are

  983. 31:58

    true.

  984. 31:59

    >> But, I, know, what, you, mean., I, love, I, just

  985. 32:02

love a pro. I love a nice pro.

  986. 32:04

    >> Yeah.

  987. 32:05

    >> Because, a, working, environment, should, be

  988. 32:09

    >> It's, just, hard, enough, to, just, do, life.

  989. 32:12

It's hard enough to do life without

  990. 32:14

    somebody being difficult. And

  991. 32:16

    >> yeah,

  992. 32:17

    >> and, we're, lucky, to, have, the, work, beyond,

  993. 32:20

    >> you, know., Don't, don't, be, sort, of, overly

  994. 32:23

    cocky with that.

  995. 32:24

    >> Yes., Agree., and, Broad, Church.

  996. 32:27

    >> I, It, makes, sense, to, me, that, you, and

  997. 32:29

David loved each other because you can

  998. 32:31

really feel it in the show.

  999. 32:32

    >> Like, it's, just, you, feel, like, true

  1000. 32:34

    partners in that show.

  1001. 32:35

    >> Yeah., And, even, though, in, the, show, you're

  1002. 32:37

    getting to be partners, but

  1003. 32:39

    >> there, was, a, such, a, m, a, feeling, of, mutual

  1004. 32:42

respect on on that. It was so good.

  1005. 32:45

    >> And, what, was, it, like, to, have, that, blow

  1006. 32:47

up? It was a huge hit.

  1007. 32:48

    >> Yes,, that, was, very, odd., I, because, no, one

  1008. 32:52

knew who had done it. That was what they

  1009. 32:54

wanted. Although when I went for my

  1010. 32:56

first audition, my sort of meet meet

  1011. 32:58

with the producers and I said, "Who did

  1012. 33:00

it?" And they told me and I went, "Oh."

  1013. 33:03

And cried and they went, "That's great.

  1014. 33:05

That's what you want." And then um in on

  1015. 33:08

the way home, like 20 minutes after I'd

  1016. 33:10

left, they phoned and went, "Uh, can you

  1017. 33:12

pretend that we didn't tell you? We've

  1018. 33:13

realized we don't want anyone to know.

  1019. 33:15

    We wanted to

  1020. 33:16

    >> I, went,, "Oh,, okay.", So, I, had, to, lie., And

  1021. 33:19

David was so crafty of me. One day his

  1022. 33:23

agent accidentally let slip right near

  1023. 33:25

the end of months of filming and he flew

  1024. 33:27

    onto my van. I went, "You [ __ ] didn't

  1025. 33:30

tell me." And I knew what he meant and I

  1026. 33:31

    couldn't look at him.

  1027. 33:32

    >> Oh,, cuz, he, didn't, know, either.

  1028. 33:34

    >> They, didn't, know., No, one, knew., But, they

  1029. 33:35

    accidentally told me.

  1030. 33:36

    >> You, knew., What, a, burden, to, carry.

  1031. 33:38

    >> Faces,, you, know,, all, the, um, 10, by8, faces

  1032. 33:40

in the makeup van and everyone was

  1033. 33:42

putting a sticker on who they thought it

  1034. 33:43

was. And I was also going, "Is it that

  1035. 33:45

might be me? Uh am I trying to terrible

  1036. 33:49

    at lying?"

  1037. 33:49

    >> Wow., So, you, you, were, reading, the, scripts

  1038. 33:51

in real time basically and Oh, that's

  1039. 33:54

    very fun.

  1040. 33:54

    >> It, was, really, fun.

  1041. 33:55

    >> And, what, a, great, way, to, be, able, to

  1042. 33:58

    >> and, and, kind, of, what, a, bummer, that, you

  1043. 33:59

knew because you we would have been, you

  1044. 34:02

know, like everyone else, but you had

  1045. 34:03

    that secret.

  1046. 34:04

    >> Yeah.

  1047. 34:04

    >> Oh,, that's, fun.

  1048. 34:05

    >> It, was, fun.

  1049. 34:06

    >> Oh,, that's, good.

  1050. 34:07

    >> But, David, Yeah., said,, "You, can't, believe

  1051. 34:08

    you didn't tell me."

  1052. 34:10

    >> And, uh, and, you're, like, "I'm, a, pro,

  1053. 34:11

    babe. I'm a pro."

  1054. 34:12

    >> Also,, I, I'd, lied, so, much, I'd, almost

  1055. 34:14

    forgotten that I knew.

  1056. 34:17

Do you think you would be good um

  1057. 34:18

convincing uh are you a good liar? Like

  1058. 34:21

do you think you'd be uh Yeah.

  1059. 34:23

    >> Without, a, script?, I'm, appalling.

  1060. 34:26

    >> Yeah., You, they, can

  1061. 34:29

    >> I, don't, know., I, think, I'm, okay., Like, I

  1062. 34:32

think sometimes could I convince a jury

  1063. 34:33

    like if I

  1064. 34:35

    >> Oh,, wow., That's, an, excellent

  1065. 34:36

    >> Could, you, convince, I, feel, like, I, could

  1066. 34:38

    convince a jury

  1067. 34:39

    >> that, you, didn't, do, it?

  1068. 34:40

    >> Yes.

  1069. 34:41

    >> I, feel, like

  1070. 34:42

    >> as, long, as, my, kids, weren't, in, the, jury,

  1071. 34:43

    I think I'd be fine.

  1072. 34:44

    >> Your, kids, would, know., They, go,, "You

  1073. 34:46

    totally did it."

  1074. 34:49

    >> Do, you, have, a, tell, when, you, lie?, I, I'm

  1075. 34:51

sure I do, too. I'd like someone to tell

  1076. 34:53

me what it is so I can work on it. But I

  1077. 34:55

    think I overexlain.

  1078. 34:57

    >> I, think, I, say, too, many, things.

  1079. 34:59

    >> Oh,, you, know, when, you, watch, traitors?

  1080. 35:02

    >> Yes.

  1081. 35:02

    >> Oh,, I, love, it, when, I, love, it, when, they

  1082. 35:05

ask someone something, they go, "What?"

  1083. 35:07

    They have to

  1084. 35:07

    >> They, say, what?, They're, stalling.

  1085. 35:09

    >> They, Yeah., And, they, do, it

  1086. 35:10

    subconsciously. It's amazing.

  1087. 35:13

watch any of those body language things

  1088. 35:15

where they show, you know, if you look

  1089. 35:16

    up to the right

  1090. 35:18

    >> or, one's, one's, recalling, information,

  1091. 35:21

    one's lying.

  1092. 35:21

    >> Yes.

  1093. 35:22

    >> Yeah., I, can't

  1094. 35:23

    >> or, if, you, touch, your, face, or, like, your

  1095. 35:25

neck. I know. If you touch your neck

  1096. 35:27

it's cuz you're about to say a lie. All

  1097. 35:29

these kind of Yeah. All these small

  1098. 35:31

things. I That is I love when people

  1099. 35:35

    stall when you go

  1100. 35:38

    >> What, did, you, say?, Yeah., Love, it.

  1101. 35:39

    >> I'm, so, sorry.

  1102. 35:41

    What?

  1103. 35:42

    >> Didn't, hear, you.

  1104. 35:45

    >> But, I, also, get, sweaty, when, you, have, to

  1105. 35:47

play those games. Like if you ever play

  1106. 35:48

    that game Mafia.

  1107. 35:49

    >> Oh, yeah.

  1108. 35:50

    >> I, don't, like, that, game., I, love, it.

  1109. 35:52

    >> You, love, it?

  1110. 35:53

    >> I, love, it.

  1111. 35:53

    >> Okay., Because, we, play, it, almost, every

  1112. 35:56

    night on holiday.

  1113. 35:58

    >> And, um, we've, discovered, as, well, any

  1114. 36:01

parents that get killed uh it's always

  1115. 36:05

their kids that have done it. Always.

  1116. 36:08

    >> Or, spouse.

  1117. 36:09

    >> Yeah., And, uh

  1118. 36:11

    >> yeah,

  1119. 36:11

    >> one, family, that, we, go, on, Hollywood, with

  1120. 36:13

every year, their kids are terrifying at

  1121. 36:15

    it.

  1122. 36:16

    >> Really, good.

  1123. 36:16

    >> Oh, my, god., So, good., And, the, the, youngest

  1124. 36:18

one got so cross with everyone accusing

  1125. 36:21

her that we went of course she's not

  1126. 36:23

    she's she was overexplaining. She's

  1127. 36:24

    doing what you say. Yes.

  1128. 36:25

    >> Just, I'm, not, literally, I, had, to, move

  1129. 36:27

because really angry and she's only 13.

  1130. 36:30

She was we oh god no probably not. Just

  1131. 36:32

maybe don't give her a chance. She was

  1132. 36:33

    absolutely killing everyone.

  1133. 36:36

    >> She, was, like, that, at, night, when, everyone

  1134. 36:37

    had their eyes closed. Amazing.

  1135. 36:41

I get very stressed. I get very giggly

  1136. 36:44

when I get accused and very stressed

  1137. 36:48

    >> and, also

  1138. 36:51

    I feel I feel like I maybe I feel like I

  1139. 36:53

act the same when I'm the murderer or

  1140. 36:55

not, but I must not. But I I don't think

  1141. 36:57

I would pass a lie detector test. Let me

  1142. 36:58

    just say that.

  1143. 36:59

    >> I, don't, think, I, would.

  1144. 37:00

    >> I, would., My, heart, would, beat.

  1145. 37:01

    >> Yeah.

  1146. 37:02

    >> But, I, think, I, could, I, could, win, over, a

  1147. 37:04

    jury.

  1148. 37:04

    >> Yeah., I, think, I, would, say,, "Ladies, and

  1149. 37:06

gentlemen of the jury, why would I want

  1150. 37:08

    to kill my spouse

  1151. 37:10

    or whatever

  1152. 37:12

    >> now?", And, I'd, be, able, to, cry., You're, a

  1153. 37:14

good crier and and you love to cry.

  1154. 37:16

    >> I, do.

  1155. 37:18

    >> It's, one, of, my, one, of, my, great, skills.

  1156. 37:21

    >> Well,, in, everyday, life,, I, don't, cry, so

  1157. 37:22

    much.

  1158. 37:23

    >> Um,, do, you, have, any, you, have, tricks, for

  1159. 37:27

    crying?

  1160. 37:27

    >> No., If, it's, sad,, I'll, cry.

  1161. 37:29

    >> Yeah.

  1162. 37:30

    >> If, the, script, is, sad., So,, broad, church.

  1163. 37:33

Yeah. come. Um, yeah, that first day it

  1164. 37:36

    was filmed chronologically, which was

  1165. 37:38

    just a gift.

  1166. 37:39

    >> Amazing.

  1167. 37:40

    >> But, they, they, were, saying,, "No,, she's, a

  1168. 37:42

police officer. She's probably a little

  1169. 37:44

harder than that one." Like, absolutely.

  1170. 37:46

    There's no way. It's just I'm sorry. I

  1171. 37:47

can't a child. And so, oh, making me

  1172. 37:51

that um if it's good script, it's

  1173. 37:55

    impossible not to.

  1174. 37:57

    >> But, in, your, life,, you're, not, the, biggest

  1175. 37:58

    crier

  1176. 38:00

    >> really., Oh,, in, the, crown, as, well,, there

  1177. 38:01

was this because the queen famously is

  1178. 38:04

was able to be there for other people

  1179. 38:07

and not cry and I couldn't do it.

  1180. 38:09

    >> There's, a, scene, where, Helen, Bonum, Carter

  1181. 38:11

is telling me about Abberavan which is

  1182. 38:14

was a terrible terrible thing that

  1183. 38:15

happened and I couldn't hear her. Yeah

  1184. 38:18

it was beautifully done but I couldn't

  1185. 38:20

hear her talking about it without crying

  1186. 38:22

and they kept going okay no

  1187. 38:25

    >> no, crying, no, I, can't., So, the, sound

  1188. 38:28

department gave me an earpiece and I

  1189. 38:30

    listened to the shipping forecast.

  1190. 38:32

    [Music]

  1191. 38:33

So in the in my ear I was hearing south

  1192. 38:36

at Sura, north at Sura, weather for

  1193. 38:37

third middling and I was just listening

  1194. 38:39

to that and zoning out while Helena said

  1195. 38:42

I can't believe our first scene together

  1196. 38:45

and you're not actually listening to me.

  1197. 38:48

    >> Wow.

  1198. 38:49

    >> And, it's, really, that's, a, good, tip

  1199. 38:50

    though.

  1200. 38:50

    >> That's, a, great, tip.

  1201. 38:52

    >> Listen, to, something, else., Don't, listen

  1202. 38:54

to your actor. I mean, I always say half

  1203. 38:55

of acting is like just keeping your face

  1204. 38:57

still, which is almost impossible for me

  1205. 38:59

    to do, but

  1206. 39:00

    >> Botox, helps, enormous, in, that, kind, of

  1207. 39:04

    >> but, the, way, in, which, everyone, just

  1208. 39:05

projects everything on your still face.

  1209. 39:08

    >> You, and, Helena, in, The, Crown, are, I, mean,

  1210. 39:12

    so wonderful. And I know you've you're

  1211. 39:13

    really good friends, too.

  1212. 39:15

    >> And, did, you, meet, on, that?

  1213. 39:16

    >> Yeah., You, had, never, worked, together

  1214. 39:18

    before.

  1215. 39:18

    >> No.

  1216. 39:19

    >> I, think, we'd, met, once, at, a, do

  1217. 39:23

    >> Mhm., and, I'd, sort, of, curtsied, to, her, and

  1218. 39:27

uh and yeah, she's she's just lovely.

  1219. 39:31

    >> I, mean,, I, know, people, have, asked, about

  1220. 39:33

meeting the queen and and playing the

  1221. 39:35

queen, but separate from the actual

  1222. 39:38

queen, the character of that woman.

  1223. 39:42

    Yeah.

  1224. 39:42

    >> Is, so, interesting.

  1225. 39:44

    >> I, know., Fascinating., you, know,, forget,

  1226. 39:47

you know, I know you're playing

  1227. 39:49

a version of of of real person and

  1228. 39:52

    you're playing a real person

  1229. 39:53

    >> but, just, the, the, the, legacy, of, that, just

  1230. 39:58

one just the idea of one life.

  1231. 40:00

    >> Yeah.

  1232. 40:00

    >> Spanning, that, much.

  1233. 40:02

    >> Yeah.

  1234. 40:02

    >> It's, so, amazing., It's, I, totally, agree.

  1235. 40:05

    It's an extraordinary that literally

  1236. 40:07

Well, most people there's someone else

  1237. 40:09

in the world who has a similar

  1238. 40:10

    experience. No one.

  1239. 40:12

    >> No, one., That's, one, person, standing, on

  1240. 40:15

    their own.

  1241. 40:15

    >> I, know.

  1242. 40:16

    >> Sitting, every, week, to, various, prime

  1243. 40:18

ministers, you know, listening to them

  1244. 40:20

    having the

  1245. 40:22

    >> hearing, everything.

  1246. 40:23

    >> And, just, having, to, keep, it, together.

  1247. 40:25

    >> It's, such, a, practice, in, restraint,, just

  1248. 40:27

a life of restraint. And and also to

  1249. 40:30

your point, being around while everyone

  1250. 40:31

    else comes and goes

  1251. 40:33

    >> being, the, constant, while

  1252. 40:35

    >> I, mean,, I, loved, the, way, that, that, show

  1253. 40:38

took on the width and breadth of that

  1254. 40:41

life. the crown. That person is the

  1255. 40:44

    crown.

  1256. 40:44

    >> And, the, way, you, take, it, from, Claire, that

  1257. 40:47

you take over that moment when you show

  1258. 40:50

up in season two, three, four

  1259. 40:53

    >> two,, three,, and, four., Yeah.

  1260. 40:55

    >> When, you, show, up, and, we, think,, "Oh, my,

  1261. 40:58

Olivia is now the queen." Like

  1262. 41:00

    >> it's, exhilarating.

  1263. 41:02

    >> Terrifying, following, on, from, Cla.

  1264. 41:04

    >> Was, it?

  1265. 41:04

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Cuz, I, loved, it., It, was, so

  1266. 41:07

highly advertised that I didn't want to

  1267. 41:09

    like it

  1268. 41:10

    >> in, that, sort, of

  1269. 41:11

    >> Totally., Yeah,, everyone, likes, it., Oh,

  1270. 41:13

    okay. No thanks.

  1271. 41:14

    >> And, then, I, accidentally, watched, it, with

  1272. 41:16

one eye open went, "Oh, no. I love it.

  1273. 41:19

    Love

  1274. 41:20

    >> so, good."

  1275. 41:21

    >> Couldn't, stop, watching, her.

  1276. 41:22

    >> Mhm.

  1277. 41:22

    >> And, so, then, got, the, got, a, call, to, they

  1278. 41:25

would like to meet you for I think my

  1279. 41:27

agent said for the queen and I thought

  1280. 41:30

that was the play that and oh and she

  1281. 41:33

said "No, no, I didn't mean that. I

  1282. 41:34

didn't mean that. Meant the crown." And

  1283. 41:36

    I and I went, "Oh my god, yeah, [ __ ]

  1284. 41:38

yeah. Absolutely. Yes, please." I said

  1285. 41:40

"I think you're not meant to say that

  1286. 41:41

yet." You meant to just go away and play

  1287. 41:43

    cool. Put your sunglasses on.

  1288. 41:44

    >> Yeah., Trying, to, be, cool., But, um, I, was

  1289. 41:47

such a huge fan of it.

  1290. 41:49

    >> Yes., Yes., And

  1291. 41:51

    >> also, it, came, at, the, point, where, I, just

  1292. 41:52

spent all my tax money. So really handy.

  1293. 41:56

    >> And, um, did, you, uh, did, you, talk, to

  1294. 41:59

    Claire?

  1295. 42:00

    >> Did, you, talk, to, Claire?, Were, you, did, you

  1296. 42:02

two talk about like handing off the tor

  1297. 42:05

    you know, handing

  1298. 42:05

    >> So, it, might, be, a, good, idea, if, you, want

  1299. 42:07

to we can give you Cla's number. Yeah.

  1300. 42:08

And so I I did speak to Cla and said

  1301. 42:11

    "Really honestly truthfully because

  1302. 42:13

it's a long commitment, long job." Um

  1303. 42:15

    and she went, "I've absolutely [ __ ]

  1304. 42:17

    loved it.

  1305. 42:18

    >> It's, a, happy, job

  1306. 42:20

    >> and, everyone's, nice."

  1307. 42:21

    >> Yes.

  1308. 42:22

    >> Okay,, that's, great.

  1309. 42:23

    >> I, mean,, there, is, a, whisper, network, among

  1310. 42:25

    actresses, especially, I think, when

  1311. 42:27

you're going to try to take a job, when

  1312. 42:29

you're lucky enough to have the choice

  1313. 42:30

    to take a job

  1314. 42:31

    >> where, you, call, other, people, to, say,

  1315. 42:34

    >> "Should, I?

  1316. 42:35

    >> Is, this, okay?", I, love, that, code, as, well.

  1317. 42:38

And amongst we do go I

  1318. 42:40

    >> or, or, there's, a

  1319. 42:42

    >> the, word, tricky.

  1320. 42:44

They can be tricky. Uh I got on quite

  1321. 42:47

well with them but I know that some

  1322. 42:48

other people. So sort of politely

  1323. 42:50

    letting you know

  1324. 42:52

    >> maybe, this, isn't, a, simple, decision.

  1325. 42:54

    >> Another, code, is, like, well, the, hours, can

  1326. 42:56

be kind of long which is a code for the

  1327. 43:00

    director's a little unorganized. Yeah.

  1328. 43:01

    >> Like, I, think, that's

  1329. 43:02

    >> and, the, scripts, aren't, ready.

  1330. 43:03

    >> Yeah., And, the, scripts, can, come, in, a

  1331. 43:05

    little late

  1332. 43:06

    >> and, I, cried, a, few, times,, but, um, as, far

  1333. 43:09

as the job. Yeah. Um and Helena and you

  1334. 43:15

I just I just want to stay there for one

  1335. 43:17

    second because

  1336. 43:18

    >> I, love, watching, you, work, with, everyone,

  1337. 43:20

but I especially love watching you work

  1338. 43:22

    with other

  1339. 43:24

super talented women and you've worked

  1340. 43:25

with a lot of really great women.

  1341. 43:27

    >> Been, really, lucky., Yeah.

  1342. 43:28

    >> You, just, who, you, when, you, meet, each

  1343. 43:30

    other on screen.

  1344. 43:31

    >> I, love, women., Me,, too.

  1345. 43:33

    >> I, mean,, I, It's, honestly, hard, to, work

  1346. 43:35

    with men.

  1347. 43:38

    >> I'm, so, sorry., I'm, sure, it, was, easy, with

  1348. 43:40

    Benedict, but like

  1349. 43:41

    >> I, mean,, we, have, to,, but, [ __ ]

  1350. 43:43

    >> I, know.

  1351. 43:44

    >> It's, hard,

  1352. 43:45

    >> Bessam., They're, just, not, as, good.

  1353. 43:47

    They're

  1354. 43:47

    >> just, not, as, good.

  1355. 43:49

    >> So, true., But, I, do, too., I, love, working

  1356. 43:52

with women and I can tell you do too.

  1357. 43:54

    >> Who, are, some, women, that, you've, worked

  1358. 43:55

with that you just went Helen? I'm sure

  1359. 43:57

is one, but like who that you just

  1360. 43:58

worked with and you said, "Oh, I'm going

  1361. 44:00

to have the best time." I think Jodie

  1362. 44:01

Whitaker on Broad Church, Helena on the

  1363. 44:05

    Crown,

  1364. 44:06

    >> and, Marian, who, played, the, Queen, Mother

  1365. 44:08

    on the Crown, just

  1366. 44:09

    >> loved, her.

  1367. 44:10

    >> Loved, her.

  1368. 44:12

    >> Um,, almost, I, always, take, a, a, good

  1369. 44:14

girlfriend with me from almost every

  1370. 44:16

    job.

  1371. 44:16

    >> What, do, you, mean?

  1372. 44:17

    >> Like, who?

  1373. 44:18

    >> Uh,

  1374. 44:19

well, Hely. Jodie is now godmother to my

  1375. 44:23

youngest. We had our youngest at the

  1376. 44:24

same time while on Broad Church.

  1377. 44:26

    >> And, uh,, Phoebe., Phoebe, Wbridge., um, and

  1378. 44:31

Amy Morgan who you probably won't have

  1379. 44:34

heard of but I think she's extraordinary

  1380. 44:35

and we met doing a play and so there's

  1381. 44:37

always one and on the roses there's Zoe

  1382. 44:40

    Sunnita.

  1383. 44:41

    >> Yes.

  1384. 44:41

    >> I, mean, Allison

  1385. 44:43

    >> Jenny, and, and

  1386. 44:44

    >> Kate, McKinnon, I'm, we, have, Kate, coming, in

  1387. 44:47

    and Kate is such an

  1388. 44:48

    >> Is, she, coming, in?

  1389. 44:49

    >> She's, coming, to, do, this, day, while, I'm

  1390. 44:51

    here.

  1391. 44:53

    >> It, is.

  1392. 44:54

    >> Are, you, lying?, You're, not, lying., But

  1393. 44:56

you're not you're going to be you're not

  1394. 44:57

going to be here and she's you're not

  1395. 44:59

going to, make, you, wait, for, Kate, because

  1396. 45:01

we have a little bit of a you know you

  1397. 45:02

got to get on that plane.

  1398. 45:03

    >> But, you, can, leave, you, want, to, leave, a

  1399. 45:05

    note for her.

  1400. 45:06

    >> Yeah., She's, coming, in, today., Okay.

  1401. 45:07

    >> And, um, she's, so, Isn't, she, such, a, wild

  1402. 45:11

    interesting eccentric bird?

  1403. 45:13

    >> She, came, so, we, had, a, girls, trip, to, to

  1404. 45:15

where I live in the countryside in

  1405. 45:16

England while we were fil filming and

  1406. 45:18

Kate came along. She's the most fun

  1407. 45:21

grown-up you've ever met. My daughter

  1408. 45:24

    couldn't believe her luck.

  1409. 45:25

    >> Yes,, she, is, fun.

  1410. 45:27

    >> She's, fun., And, she, played, she, was, a, I

  1411. 45:29

think um a pee hen or something for

  1412. 45:32

    about three hours.

  1413. 45:34

    So [ __ ] hell.

  1414. 45:37

    It's amazing.

  1415. 45:39

    My little girls going.

  1416. 45:44

Um Phoebe Flea Bag huge. Another huge

  1417. 45:48

    show.

  1418. 45:48

    >> Yeah.

  1419. 45:49

    >> And, well,, I, mean, she's, an, amazing, woman

  1420. 45:52

    and she

  1421. 45:53

No, she's brilliant at what she does and

  1422. 45:55

she works hard and she's really driven

  1423. 45:58

and kind to everybody and yeah, just

  1424. 46:01

    another [ __ ] fantastic woman.

  1425. 46:04

    >> Yeah.

  1426. 46:04

    >> And, that, first, episode, of, the, second

  1427. 46:07

season of uh Flea Bag, which was with

  1428. 46:09

Andrew Scott and sitting around the

  1429. 46:11

    dining the that restaurant table.

  1430. 46:13

    >> Yes.

  1431. 46:13

    >> Felt, like, the, most, brilliant, play.

  1432. 46:16

    >> Yes.

  1433. 46:17

    >> And, just, that, whole, episode,, one, one

  1434. 46:19

dinner scene. M uh I just I love the way

  1435. 46:22

    she writes.

  1436. 46:23

    >> Yeah.

  1437. 46:23

    >> And, she, gives, everybody

  1438. 46:25

    >> so, many, good., You, have, so, also, so, many

  1439. 46:27

good jokes in that show. Great jokes.

  1440. 46:30

    >> That, character, is, hilarious, and, and

  1441. 46:32

    deeply disturbing.

  1442. 46:33

    >> Yeah., I, mean

  1443. 46:34

    >> and, I, got, it, wrong, initially., I, was, uh

  1444. 46:36

playing her sort of quite evil

  1445. 46:38

    >> and, um, I, was, like,, "It's, not, what, you

  1446. 46:42

meant, is it?" She went, "Well, she's

  1447. 46:44

the most charming person in any room.

  1448. 46:47

She'll be vile to you and you sort of

  1449. 46:50

    >> keep, sort, of, think, sort, of, being

  1450. 46:52

grateful for the you know she

  1451. 46:55

    >> it's, so, vile.

  1452. 46:56

    >> I, mean, it's, like, Yeah., She's, she's, like

  1453. 46:58

    an the ultimate narcissist.

  1454. 47:00

    >> And, when, you're, that, way,, you're, usually

  1455. 47:02

    quite charming. Yeah.

  1456. 47:03

    >> Yeah., You're, not, usually, like, there's, a

  1457. 47:05

way in which you draw people in and then

  1458. 47:06

    you

  1459. 47:07

    >> slowly, kill, them., Um,, and, then, the, the

  1460. 47:11

the the before we get to the roses, I

  1461. 47:14

just I I feel like there was this

  1462. 47:18

beautiful couple of years I where

  1463. 47:22

    America

  1464. 47:24

    said

  1465. 47:24

    >> I've, just, realized, I, just, said, how, much

  1466. 47:26

I love what women and I've just done a

  1467. 47:27

    film with Benedict as well.

  1468. 47:28

    >> Well,, but, Benedict, feels, like, he's

  1469. 47:30

    sensitive enough that he counts.

  1470. 47:31

    >> Oh, my, god,, he, does., He, really, does., I

  1471. 47:33

feel awful that I loved working with

  1472. 47:35

    Benedict.

  1473. 47:36

    >> Well,, we're, going, to, talk, about, working

  1474. 47:37

with, Benedict., He's, going to, be, fine.

  1475. 47:38

    Okay, good. Great.

  1476. 47:39

    >> Benedict, can, handle, it.

  1477. 47:40

    >> Yeah., Yeah.

  1478. 47:42

    >> And, Andy, was, I, love, Andy.

  1479. 47:43

    >> Andy's, fine.

  1480. 47:44

    >> And, Jamie.

  1481. 47:45

    >> Of, course,, you, love, all, the, people., They

  1482. 47:46

know. They do love the people.

  1483. 47:48

    >> They, know., Um,

  1484. 47:49

    >> sorry, to, interrupt.

  1485. 47:49

    >> No., No., Not, at, all., But, I'm, not, worried

  1486. 47:51

    about Benedict.

  1487. 47:52

    >> Okay., Okay., Good.

  1488. 47:53

    >> He's, so, tall., We, don't, have, to, worry

  1489. 47:55

    about him.

  1490. 47:55

    >> No,, he'll, he'll, be, fine.

  1491. 47:56

    >> He, will, be, fine.

  1492. 47:57

    >> Yeah.

  1493. 47:59

But no, but but we will talk about that

  1494. 48:01

because but there was this like amazing

  1495. 48:04

couple of years where we got to see a

  1496. 48:08

lot of work being congratulated when you

  1497. 48:12

won that award when you won the Academy

  1498. 48:14

Award, right? And you've won a lot of

  1499. 48:15

awards. And what I loved about that

  1500. 48:18

moment was what I felt in that moment

  1501. 48:20

and tell me if I'm wrong is that you

  1502. 48:22

    probably feel about awards

  1503. 48:25

the same way I feel about awards which

  1504. 48:26

is like lovely but but like also who

  1505. 48:30

    cares.

  1506. 48:31

    >> Yeah., I, don't, that's, awkward, things.

  1507. 48:33

    Yeah. I

  1508. 48:34

    >> Okay,, maybe, I, should, say, it, less

  1509. 48:35

    bluntly. Like

  1510. 48:36

    >> well, I, I, feel, like, oh, my, god, it's, it, is

  1511. 48:39

the most lovely if your peers have said

  1512. 48:43

yes seal of approval. There's nothing

  1513. 48:45

    better.

  1514. 48:46

    >> Yes.

  1515. 48:47

    >> But, I, think, also, give, yourself, uh, a, a

  1516. 48:51

few days to feel pretty thrilled with

  1517. 48:53

    yourself and then

  1518. 48:54

    >> then, forget, it, ever, happened.

  1519. 48:56

    >> Go, back, to, work.

  1520. 48:57

    >> That's, right.

  1521. 48:58

    >> Yeah., It, was, amazing, and, it, might, never

  1522. 49:00

happen again and weren't you lucky and

  1523. 49:02

now head down. I find that Brits in

  1524. 49:05

    general accept awards really well

  1525. 49:07

because they do just that is which they

  1526. 49:09

like kind of like stay in the moment and

  1527. 49:12

say thank you and they're very polite

  1528. 49:14

but also you can tell they're like I

  1529. 49:16

    can't let I can't internalize this or

  1530. 49:17

    I'm in trouble.

  1531. 49:18

    >> Yeah., Yeah., Yeah.

  1532. 49:19

    >> It, is, a, little, bit, more, American, to, be

  1533. 49:20

like I made it to the top of the

  1534. 49:22

mountain and I'm here and I'm never

  1535. 49:24

getting off and I knew it and I and I

  1536. 49:27

got it and I went went for it. But

  1537. 49:29

    they're completely different feelings.

  1538. 49:30

But that your speech was do you have a

  1539. 49:34

you know I know it's hard to like think

  1540. 49:35

about yourself and talk about yourself.

  1541. 49:38

It's always hard to talk about yourself.

  1542. 49:39

    >> But, do, you, have, a, do, you, have, a, sense, of

  1543. 49:41

why that speech was so wellreceived. It

  1544. 49:44

just was this like everyone felt very um

  1545. 49:47

with you in that moment. It felt like

  1546. 49:49

really organic. What was your memories

  1547. 49:52

of getting up and giving that speech and

  1548. 49:54

you know like being inside of it? What

  1549. 49:57

    did it feel like?

  1550. 49:57

    >> So, much, I, don't, really, remember., Um, but

  1551. 50:00

just beforehand I in the buildup to it

  1552. 50:02

in the months the buildup people going

  1553. 50:04

kept saying Oscars and I go stop it and

  1554. 50:06

I would got furious it was all too scary

  1555. 50:08

terrifying don't be ridiculous and uh

  1556. 50:11

and then on the evening like 20 minutes

  1557. 50:13

before we were meant to go my husband

  1558. 50:15

went don't be cross but just in case

  1559. 50:17

I've just put some notes on a piece of

  1560. 50:20

paper and he went out and just [ __ ]

  1561. 50:22

    wanker [ __ ] okay that's quite good

  1562. 50:25

things okay so he just said just

  1563. 50:28

remember if it happens to to know say

  1564. 50:32

this or say that say thank you and and

  1565. 50:35

um so it was that I would have

  1566. 50:39

    >> well, I'm, stuttering, now, you, I, would, have

  1567. 50:40

been so useless it was absolutely real

  1568. 50:43

and shocking but if it wasn't for him

  1569. 50:45

just just take just take five minutes

  1570. 50:47

    just in case

  1571. 50:49

    >> to, think, about, it, I, know

  1572. 50:50

    >> writer, producer, director, he, he, took, care

  1573. 50:53

    of you

  1574. 50:54

    >> hottie

  1575. 50:54

    >> general, hottie, and, also, the, moment, you

  1576. 50:56

guys had was so sweet I mean you you

  1577. 50:59

    have a wonderful long-lasting marriage

  1578. 51:01

with Ed and you met at where did you

  1579. 51:04

    meet?

  1580. 51:04

    >> In, the, town, of, Cambridge.

  1581. 51:06

    >> He, was, at, Cambridge.

  1582. 51:07

    >> Olivia's, crying, a, little, bit.

  1583. 51:13

    >> Yeah.

  1584. 51:14

    >> You, love, Ed., He's, your, best, friend., You

  1585. 51:16

called him your best friend. I love

  1586. 51:18

    >> He's, my, best, friend, and, I, fancy, him.

  1587. 51:20

    He's quite nice.

  1588. 51:21

    >> Love., Okay., How, did, you, meet?

  1589. 51:23

    >> You, have, his, name.

  1590. 51:24

    >> I, do, have, his, name., It's, a, bit, like, he's

  1591. 51:27

pissed on me that it was my choice.

  1592. 51:29

    >> He, just, stamped, it, on, me.

  1593. 51:31

    >> Okay., How, did, you, meet?

  1594. 51:32

    >> We, met, in, a, play, uh, uh, rehearsal., Um, he

  1595. 51:36

    and

  1596. 51:37

    >> I'd, gone, to, two, of, the, rehearsals, and

  1597. 51:40

there was no one particularly fancable

  1598. 51:42

there. I think and then I walked in and

  1599. 51:45

I saw his left hand profile and at the

  1600. 51:48

time uh he was smoking a Ziggy. His feet

  1601. 51:51

were crossed and he's got this lovely

  1602. 51:53

bump in his nose and I saw his side

  1603. 51:55

    profiles. Went

  1604. 51:57

    >> oh, god,, I'm, gonna, marry, him.

  1605. 51:59

    >> No,

  1606. 52:00

    >> proper, thunderbolts., That's, him., That's

  1607. 52:01

    him.

  1608. 52:02

    >> Yeah.

  1609. 52:02

    >> Oh,

  1610. 52:03

    >> I, know., Poor, thing., He, didn't, know.

  1611. 52:08

    >> And, what, does, he, say, about, it, the, first

  1612. 52:10

    time he met you?

  1613. 52:11

    >> Uh,, he, he, genuinely, can't, remember.

  1614. 52:18

    >> That's, so, great., I, mean,, what's, I, mean,

  1615. 52:20

what is the secret to a long-lasting

  1616. 52:21

relationship? Any any tips, any advice?

  1617. 52:23

    >> I, don't, know.

  1618. 52:24

    >> You're, making, a, movie, about, the, opposite

  1619. 52:26

    of that.

  1620. 52:27

    >> Yes,, that's, true., Well,, it's, our, 25th

  1621. 52:29

    wedding anniversary next year.

  1622. 52:30

    >> Wow.

  1623. 52:31

    >> We've, been, together, 31, years.

  1624. 52:33

    >> Wow.

  1625. 52:33

    >> Um

  1626. 52:35

    uh we I don't think it's We're not big

  1627. 52:38

    fighters, which apparently isn't very

  1628. 52:40

    healthy.

  1629. 52:41

    >> Okay., Can, we, talk, about, this, for, a

  1630. 52:42

second? I agree. I've see a lot of uh

  1631. 52:45

research that says you really should

  1632. 52:46

    argue and fight.

  1633. 52:49

Okay. Like it feels so like like what if

  1634. 52:52

    you're not I mean I I I don't I'm not

  1635. 52:55

afraid of conflict but I don't

  1636. 52:56

necessarily like want to search it out.

  1637. 52:57

    And

  1638. 52:58

    >> yeah,, I, I, don't, want, people, that, argue

  1639. 53:00

    >> and, I, do, think, that

  1640. 53:03

    >> it, is, okay., We, we, have, learned, over, the

  1641. 53:06

years, but really late on actually to um

  1642. 53:08

    sometimes if that was annoying

  1643. 53:11

    >> then, just, wait, until, it's

  1644. 53:15

    >> uh, it, doesn't, work, for, everyone., I, know

  1645. 53:17

    that. And uh

  1646. 53:19

    >> but, we, I, I, think, it's, better, to, wait

  1647. 53:20

till the much calmer moment to go can we

  1648. 53:22

talk about that moment? And I did find

  1649. 53:24

that a little weird. And is that okay

  1650. 53:27

that I'm saying this? And yes, no. Yeah

  1651. 53:29

I was a bit cross that day and Okay. But

  1652. 53:32

okay, I'm so pleased. Thank you. So, you

  1653. 53:34

    know um

  1654. 53:35

    >> that, by, far, that's, the, most, British

  1655. 53:36

    conversation I've ever heard.

  1656. 53:40

    >> Yeah., Nothing, actually, talking.

  1657. 53:43

    >> Maggie, Gyllenhaal, stood, when, we, did, the

  1658. 53:45

    lost daughter and beautiful movie.

  1659. 53:47

    >> Ed,, different, Ed, was, the, costume

  1660. 53:49

designer and me. He's English and I'm in

  1661. 53:51

English and he was talking about a hat

  1662. 53:53

and he said I I left the hat out. I

  1663. 53:55

didn't know if he I went, "Oh, I see. I

  1664. 53:57

But I didn't know if did you want me to

  1665. 53:58

wear it now?" And but if you like it.

  1666. 54:00

No, I do like it. I just wondering

  1667. 54:02

because it's um and this went on for 20

  1668. 54:04

minutes. And Maggie at the time it was

  1669. 54:06

co she took a mask down and went

  1670. 54:08

    >> "Oh, my, god.", Like, nothing, has, been, said.

  1671. 54:13

    20 minutes.

  1672. 54:14

    >> Yes.

  1673. 54:15

    >> Yeah., And, I'd, never, realized, it, before

  1674. 54:17

    that moment when she just

  1675. 54:21

    >> Yeah., So, that's, how, we, argue., M, and, and

  1676. 54:25

okay, so it leads me re really naturally

  1677. 54:27

into the film that um that's out right

  1678. 54:30

now with the great Benedict Cumberbatch.

  1679. 54:34

And um what a pro, what a pro. And you

  1680. 54:38

know, so I ask people before these um

  1681. 54:41

podcasts to give me a question to ask my

  1682. 54:43

guests and we speak well behind their

  1683. 54:45

back like I said and and he was, you

  1684. 54:47

know, of course he's like absolutely

  1685. 54:49

adores you and you guys have never

  1686. 54:51

worked together before which is really

  1687. 54:52

    interesting. Um and

  1688. 54:55

    >> like, you, I, think, he's, able, to, he's, shown

  1689. 54:59

that he's able to toggle between a bunch

  1690. 55:02

of different styles and genres. Also, it

  1691. 55:05

    makes me think sometimes that

  1692. 55:07

uh you know there maybe it's a bit more

  1693. 55:11

uh licensed to do do that in the in in

  1694. 55:14

the UK than the US. I don't know.

  1695. 55:16

    >> Well,, to, go, between, drama, and

  1696. 55:17

    >> maybe, I'm, thinking, about, it, now, because

  1697. 55:19

    >> you, know, Emma, Thompson, and, and, Kathy

  1698. 55:22

Burke and we do have a line of well I'm

  1699. 55:25

just thinking of the women but we do

  1700. 55:26

have a long line of of people who've

  1701. 55:28

been allowed to do both. Well, I

  1702. 55:30

remember people talking about Hugh Lori

  1703. 55:31

in house and he was like, you know, Hu

  1704. 55:33

    Lori started in sketch

  1705. 55:35

    >> comedy., Sketch, comedy.

  1706. 55:36

    >> Yeah., Yeah.

  1707. 55:37

    >> Um, but, um, he, was, asking, me,, he, asked, a

  1708. 55:40

very like sweet actor question, which is

  1709. 55:43

basically like he is in awe of you and

  1710. 55:46

what you can do and he was like, "Is

  1711. 55:47

    there anything you're afraid of

  1712. 55:50

    acting wise?"

  1713. 55:51

    >> Well,, I, couldn't, really, tell.

  1714. 55:53

    >> Oh,

  1715. 55:53

    >> I, couldn't, really, tell, what, he, was, what

  1716. 55:55

the question was. And but let's say

  1717. 55:57

sure. I would say acting wise.

  1718. 56:00

    >> Uh,, anything, where, I, have, to, show, any

  1719. 56:01

    skin.

  1720. 56:02

    >> Mhm.

  1721. 56:03

    >> I, don't, like, it.

  1722. 56:04

    >> No,, thank, you.

  1723. 56:04

    >> I, don't, think, or, pretending, to, have, sex

  1724. 56:07

with someone. I don't like it.

  1725. 56:10

    >> I, don't, like, it.

  1726. 56:13

    >> I, feel, like, I'm, being, unfaithful, and, it

  1727. 56:15

    just feels a bit

  1728. 56:17

    >> Yeah.

  1729. 56:18

    >> Even, when, they, go,, you, can, wear, your

  1730. 56:19

jeans or and a cushion between you. I

  1731. 56:21

don't want to do that. Is that what I

  1732. 56:23

    don't know? I don't know.

  1733. 56:25

    >> No., The, or, the, the, on., And, by, the, way,

  1734. 56:28

bless the people that are good at it.

  1735. 56:30

The people that are good at it, I'm

  1736. 56:32

like, I'll watch it all day long.

  1737. 56:34

    >> Yeah.

  1738. 56:34

    >> And, they're, comfy,, but, Oh,, and, on, screen

  1739. 56:39

    orgasm.

  1740. 56:40

    >> No,, absolutely, not.

  1741. 56:42

    >> Like, that's, that's, what, you, have, to, do

  1742. 56:43

that day. Like that's that's tough.

  1743. 56:45

    >> Thank, god, for, um, intimacy, coordinators.

  1744. 56:47

    >> Absolutely.

  1745. 56:48

    >> EA, O'Brien, who, is, she, told, me, and, I, was

  1746. 56:51

    meant to orgasm. Oh

  1747. 56:55

God. How do you do that? said, "Imagine

  1748. 56:56

the sun is hitting your face."

  1749. 56:58

    >> That, was, great.

  1750. 57:00

    >> So,, just, be, given, a, Yes.

  1751. 57:01

    >> And, you, just, go, like, this.

  1752. 57:02

    >> Yeah.

  1753. 57:05

    >> You, just, You, go,, "Oh, my, god.", You, just

  1754. 57:07

take your put your sunglasses on. You

  1755. 57:09

    go.

  1756. 57:12

    >> You, should, have, done, it, like, that.

  1757. 57:17

    >> Yeah., Okay., All right., Well,, you, got

  1758. 57:19

your you got your answer. You got your

  1759. 57:21

answer. But what was it like working

  1760. 57:22

with him on the on the film? I loved

  1761. 57:24

working with him and he's he sort of

  1762. 57:26

feels like one of life's innocents in a

  1763. 57:29

way, you know, uh because we um we had

  1764. 57:32

such fun, but when it started to get a

  1765. 57:34

little bit more cruel to each other, he

  1766. 57:36

did go we could pause for a minute. Are

  1767. 57:38

    we okay?

  1768. 57:40

Yes, Ben, it's pretend. It's all okay.

  1769. 57:44

And you know, he get he's he's so in it

  1770. 57:46

    and

  1771. 57:47

    >> yes,

  1772. 57:48

    >> it's, just, lovely., But, I, felt, like, I

  1773. 57:50

wanted to hold his hand a lot and go

  1774. 57:52

    >> "It's, it's, all, we're, good., We're, still

  1775. 57:54

    friends." And

  1776. 57:55

    >> Yes.

  1777. 57:56

    >> Yeah., And, and

  1778. 57:57

    >> it's, lovely, to, work, opposite, him, because

  1779. 57:58

he's absolutely feeling it. It's all

  1780. 57:59

    instant.

  1781. 58:00

    >> I, bet., I, I, mean,, even, just, seeing, the

  1782. 58:02

way in which you the two watching the

  1783. 58:04

two of you spar is is really exciting

  1784. 58:07

because it's two very good actors going

  1785. 58:10

really hard. And plus there's just a ton

  1786. 58:12

of like dumb physical stuff which is so

  1787. 58:15

fun. Do you like doing that?

  1788. 58:16

    >> No.

  1789. 58:16

    >> No., Me, neither., I, don't, I, don't, want, to.

  1790. 58:18

    I'm not very physical.

  1791. 58:19

    >> I, don't, want, any, running., Yeah., I, don't

  1792. 58:20

    want to.

  1793. 58:21

    >> But, he, is, really, good, at, that,, which, is

  1794. 58:22

great. So, I just had the gun and he

  1795. 58:24

    just ran around.

  1796. 58:27

    >> And, you're, like,, I, think, my, character

  1797. 58:28

    would sit.

  1798. 58:29

    >> Yeah., Um,, and, then, Jay, Roach.

  1799. 58:32

    >> Oh, my, gosh.

  1800. 58:32

    >> Isn't, he, a, delight?, The, director., I, love

  1801. 58:35

    him.

  1802. 58:35

    >> He, I, love, him., And, I, felt, bad, for, him

  1803. 58:38

every day because it was like trying to

  1804. 58:40

nail jelly to the wall, trying to get us

  1805. 58:42

all to stop giggling or stop

  1806. 58:45

    >> doing, bits, and, joking., Also,, he, how

  1807. 58:48

often does he hit his head?

  1808. 58:50

    >> Oh,, because, he's, so, tall.

  1809. 58:51

    >> Well,, he, wears, a, hat, as, well., He, doesn't

  1810. 58:54

see the booms and the lights. And the

  1811. 58:56

crew ended up hanging sticky tape down

  1812. 58:58

from everything so that he was he still

  1813. 59:00

    did it

  1814. 59:01

    >> 15, times, a, day., Oh,

  1815. 59:03

    >> it's, got, to, be, some, kind, of

  1816. 59:04

    psychological thing that he's doing.

  1817. 59:07

    >> He, can't, get, across, with, us., He, doesn't

  1818. 59:08

    say about things.

  1819. 59:11

    >> And, then,, okay,, we, talked, about, Kate.

  1820. 59:12

    You worked with Andy.

  1821. 59:14

    >> Okay., The, movie, is, out., Okay., Okay., And

  1822. 59:16

    then my last question is

  1823. 59:19

that I ask everybody and it's kind of

  1824. 59:21

like a like the the reason why I'm I try

  1825. 59:24

started doing this podcast genuinely was

  1826. 59:27

like to try to I don't know make sense

  1827. 59:30

of this wicked world and find some

  1828. 59:32

solace in what everybody was doing to

  1829. 59:34

    keep themselves

  1830. 59:37

laughing. Um, what do you watch, read

  1831. 59:42

do? What's making you laugh right now

  1832. 59:45

    today? Big or small? Uh

  1833. 59:49

    a a, you, know,, a, a, person,, a, video,, a, a

  1834. 59:52

show, old or new, that you go to?

  1835. 59:54

    >> The, the, thing, that, makes, me, laugh, more

  1836. 59:56

    than anything, belly laugh, which

  1837. 59:58

doesn't happen often enough, is watching

  1838. 59:59

my husband fall over or hit his head.

  1839. 1:00:04

    >> On, purpose, or, by, accident?

  1840. 1:00:05

    >> By, accident., I

  1841. 1:00:07

    >> you, just, love, an, accent.

  1842. 1:00:08

    >> It, literally, makes, me, go, weak., I

  1843. 1:00:10

    clapped. It's so

  1844. 1:00:11

    >> Did, you, ever, watch, America's, Funniest

  1845. 1:00:13

    Home Videos?

  1846. 1:00:14

    >> Have, you, ever, seen, that, show?

  1847. 1:00:16

    >> Oh,, that's, the, sort, of

  1848. 1:00:18

    >> Standby., Just, one, second, before, you, go.

  1849. 1:00:20

We're going to get you on recently where

  1850. 1:00:22

people just lie down with the Have you

  1851. 1:00:24

    seen this?

  1852. 1:00:25

    >> So,, I'm, turn, around, and, Ed's, lying, down.

  1853. 1:00:28

You just see his head there and and

  1854. 1:00:30

people go what? And they film. Oh

  1855. 1:00:33

that's that's gorgeous. You love. Do you

  1856. 1:00:35

    like being pranked?

  1857. 1:00:36

    >> I've, got, to, do, that,, haven't, I?, Film, it.

  1858. 1:00:38

    >> Yes.

  1859. 1:00:39

    >> Okay., Don't, tell, him., Don't, tell, him.

  1860. 1:00:40

    >> Do, you, like, Do, you, like, being, pranked?

  1861. 1:00:42

    >> No.

  1862. 1:00:43

    >> Okay.

  1863. 1:00:43

    >> No., If, someone, makes, me, jump,, I, will

  1864. 1:00:44

    punch them in the face.

  1865. 1:00:45

    >> Me,, too., I, don't, like, being, surprised., I

  1866. 1:00:47

am not people get a tiny bit hurt.

  1867. 1:00:50

    >> Yeah.

  1868. 1:00:53

    >> But, they're, fine,, right?, They, have, to

  1869. 1:00:54

    jump.

  1870. 1:00:54

    >> As, long, as, they're, fine, as, long, as

  1871. 1:00:56

they're okay. I don't If it looks like

  1872. 1:00:58

    Oh, god. That looks like

  1873. 1:00:59

    >> Sorry., Sorry., Sorry.

  1874. 1:01:00

    >> Fun.

  1875. 1:01:01

    >> Okay,, let's, watch, just, two, minutes, of

  1876. 1:01:03

this, and, we're, going to, let, you, go.

  1877. 1:01:04

ever. Ever. I mean, I know what you

  1878. 1:01:06

mean. Okay. These kind of things. Do I

  1879. 1:01:09

    need my glasses?

  1880. 1:01:09

    >> We're, watching, America's, Funniest, Home

  1881. 1:01:11

    Videos.

  1882. 1:01:12

    >> What's, that, person, doing?

  1883. 1:01:13

    >> That, person's, That, person's, stuck, in, the

  1884. 1:01:15

ceiling. So, that person doing something

  1885. 1:01:19

and there and she she's stuck in the

  1886. 1:01:21

    ceiling.

  1887. 1:01:26

    >> Okay,, that, might, have, been, too, hard, a

  1888. 1:01:28

fall. Have you seen Have you seen the

  1889. 1:01:30

two women trying to get into the window?

  1890. 1:01:33

    >> Oh,, yeah., Oh, god.

  1891. 1:01:34

    >> Oh,, I, want, her., That, That, is

  1892. 1:01:37

    >> Let's, watch, the, two, women, get, trying, to

  1893. 1:01:38

    get in the window.

  1894. 1:01:39

    >> Yes,

  1895. 1:01:40

    >> that, is, so

  1896. 1:01:40

    >> And, the, other, one, is, no, help, at, all

  1897. 1:01:42

outside clearly trying not to piss

  1898. 1:01:44

    herself going.

  1899. 1:01:46

    >> Yeah., When, they, start, want, to, wet

  1900. 1:01:48

themselves up and they start laughing

  1901. 1:01:51

    >> that, does, two, women, trying, to, get, into, a

  1902. 1:01:54

window. Okay, here we go. Okay. Okay

  1903. 1:01:58

let's watch. Here we go. Here we go.

  1904. 1:02:01

Okay, they're trying to get in the

  1905. 1:02:02

window and one of them is giving the

  1906. 1:02:04

    other one a foot up.

  1907. 1:02:05

    >> Wearing, the, right, clothes, for, this., We

  1908. 1:02:06

    know that, won't we?

  1909. 1:02:08

    >> She's, wearing, a, She's, both, barefoot

  1910. 1:02:12

    here.

  1911. 1:02:17

    >> Her, shirt, comes, off., That's, right., Her

  1912. 1:02:20

shirt comes off. So, she's upside down

  1913. 1:02:23

with these boobs, which are now facing

  1914. 1:02:24

    that way. and her mate

  1915. 1:02:30

    >> and, her, and, her, gloves, come, off, and

  1916. 1:02:32

they're dying laughing. I mean, this is

  1917. 1:02:35

the kind of thing that Benny Hill told

  1918. 1:02:36

me would happen when I and it did

  1919. 1:02:38

    happen. It actually happened.

  1920. 1:02:40

    >> Oh, my, god,, it's, that's, I, love, that.

  1921. 1:02:43

    >> I, do, too., There's, no, there's, no, better

  1922. 1:02:46

feeling. And that makes me want to watch

  1923. 1:02:48

    that again.

  1924. 1:02:49

    >> And, hearing, them, weak,, you, know,, when

  1925. 1:02:51

    you can't speak.

  1926. 1:02:52

    >> Oh,, yes., and, knowing, that, one, person, is

  1927. 1:02:55

    peeing

  1928. 1:02:56

    >> right, their, pants.

  1929. 1:02:57

    >> And, if, the, upside, down, woman, was, also

  1930. 1:02:59

    peeing,

  1931. 1:03:04

    >> well,, Olivia,, I, love, you., I, love, that

  1932. 1:03:07

you came. Thank you so much for coming

  1933. 1:03:09

in what I know is is a press day. And um

  1934. 1:03:12

if you want to leave a note for Kate

  1935. 1:03:14

    let me know.

  1936. 1:03:14

    >> Oh,, yes,, please., And, um

  1937. 1:03:16

    >> has, Kate, seen, that?

  1938. 1:03:17

    >> I'm, going, to, show, it., She, would, enjoy

  1939. 1:03:18

that. She's like, she probably she

  1940. 1:03:20

    probably is like

  1941. 1:03:21

    >> I, reenacted, it.

  1942. 1:03:21

    >> I, was, going, to, say, she, probably

  1943. 1:03:25

Thank you so much. I love

  1944. 1:03:27

    >> Thank, you, for, having, me., I, want, you, to

  1945. 1:03:29

    come and stay.
