Martin Short on Good Hang with Amy Poehler

The Hang, in Short

Colin Jost dropped a wild full-circle moment: Ed Grimley was his first SNL character ever, spotted on a childhood studio tour before he even watched the show. Now he's on Update. Amy recruits Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Jost to prep questions for Martin Short, who talks SNL 50th and recovering from COVID (which hit basically everyone, from Meryl Streep to Mike Myers to Amy Schumer). Tina admits she's had a decades-long crush on Marty and saw him ushering a Godspell show in the early 90s. She wants to know if he was ever frustrated being "the funny guy" in prestige projects like Father of the Bride. Jost's proposed questions? "Who was your biggest enemy and who did you hook up with?" Amy's genuinely considering asking them. Marty reveals he and Steve Martin tested SNL 50th material at Comedy Cellar, which is insane given Steve's last club set was apparently 1966.

    Places do you say

  35. 1:35

Maya and Colin I'm being asked would you

  36. 1:37

mind flipping your phones to the side

  37. 1:40

like yeah and I know this seems weird

  38. 1:43

but can you hold your credit cards up to

  39. 1:45

the screen too oh yes you want the C CVC

  40. 1:50

yeah we need the CV the CVV we need the

  41. 1:53

DV Jo I don't know if you know but I

  42. 1:56

already did a podcast with Tina who

  43. 1:59

nicely came in to be interviewed I look

  44. 2:01

forward to doing one with you Maya I

  45. 2:03

look forward to doing one with you yes

  46. 2:05

and joose you were Nam dropped in in in

  47. 2:08

the interview that Tina and I did we

  48. 2:09

were talking about um how much we love

  49. 2:12

    going to the

  50. 2:14

Lampoon so we're doing this thing um

  51. 2:17

where we're asking people to kind of

  52. 2:18

talk behind people's back in a good way

  53. 2:22

so I've got the great Martin Short on

  54. 2:24

today never you've all worked yeah never

  55. 2:29

but I bet he's good if you like him yeah

  56. 2:32

I like him I think you should check him

  57. 2:33

    out I think he's

  58. 2:35

funny I found him on Tik Tok oh so uh I

  59. 2:40

guess my question is what yeah you know

  60. 2:44

how much do you love Martin Short what

  61. 2:46

do you love about him what do you think

  62. 2:47

I should ask him when I think about him

  63. 2:49

    I think he's

  64. 2:50

    Evergreen

  65. 2:52

    he's he's the he's always funny and he's

  66. 2:56

always up for being funny and he will

  67. 2:59

always always make you laugh and he's

  68. 3:01

there is a there is a just an unbridled

  69. 3:05

joy in him in the in the pursuit of

  70. 3:11

being funny I mean don't get me wrong he

  71. 3:12

works hard at it and but he but you can

  72. 3:15

see that he loves it and you can also

  73. 3:18

see that he loves to be among funny

  74. 3:20

people there are some funny people who

  75. 3:22

love to be solo acts and he's not one of

  76. 3:26

them I think he's one of those people

  77. 3:28

    that thrives among the Funnies

  78. 3:31

and he's just like a like a great guy so

  79. 3:37

    inherently that comes through somehow

  80. 3:40

through the comedy which makes you love

  81. 3:43

him more when I found out that he had a

  82. 3:46

    stamp in

  83. 3:48

Canada I was like oh that that that

  84. 3:51

checks out that makes sense you're

  85. 3:54

perfect that's awesome wow I got to look

  86. 3:57

at the image of that is it just him or

  87. 3:59

of his characters I wonder my memory is

  88. 4:02

it might have been one of his characters

  89. 4:05

    character from halfwits it's a it's a

  90. 4:07

regular stamp but he owns it he bought

  91. 4:10

it Canada's a much cooler place because

  92. 4:13

I think Katherine O'Hara has a stamp too

  93. 4:15

I'm just saying I don't think any of us

  94. 4:17

are getting stamps in the next four four

  95. 4:19

    to

  96. 4:21

four so I'm gonna ask him about a stamp

  97. 4:24

um Tina Jo anything you feel like I

  98. 4:26

should ask him anything you want to say

  99. 4:27

about Marty I love Marty I want to I

  100. 4:30

want to claim my love for Marty early

  101. 4:32

like I know I love him I've also had a

  102. 4:34

crush on Marty from like decades before

  103. 4:36

everyone else I remember I came to New

  104. 4:38

York City when I was maybe in college

  105. 4:41

and you used to be able to go see um uh

  106. 4:45

Broadway shows for free by being an

  107. 4:47

usher and so I I was ushering at a a

  108. 4:50

production of gods spell in like the

  109. 4:52

early 90s late 80s with like triny

  110. 4:55

Alvarado as in whatever and I remember I

  111. 4:57

was ushering and I turned around and I

  112. 4:59

saw um the two people that I handed

  113. 5:02

their programs to were Paul Schaefer and

  114. 5:04

Martin SCH and I was like because of

  115. 5:06

course Marty had been in the original

  116. 5:08

Toronto production um but also I was

  117. 5:10

like I was Star Struck and also I was

  118. 5:12

like also Marty's cute anyway I'm on

  119. 5:15

    record I'm you're not alone buddy you're

  120. 5:17

not alone Mike so I do I would love to

  121. 5:19

hear him talk about that Toronto

  122. 5:21

production of God spell because I think

  123. 5:23

that cast was incredible and it was like

  124. 5:25

Gilda rner and I want to say Andrew and

  125. 5:28

    Martin like it was insane

  126. 5:31

yeah and then the other kind of question

  127. 5:32

I was thinking about was um uh you know

  128. 5:36

everything that we everything that we

  129. 5:39

know Marty from that we grew up with

  130. 5:41

it's all Canon right like everything

  131. 5:43

from Father of the Bride and Three

  132. 5:45

Amigos and and Clifford all these things

  133. 5:48

andv to us it's all just like comedy

  134. 5:51

Bible I wonder for him during that time

  135. 5:55

    if he ever felt

  136. 5:57

like frustrated with being like the

  137. 6:00

funny person in the like was was he

  138. 6:02

happy with his career in that time or

  139. 6:04

did he did he want more and and does he

  140. 6:09

does he feel differently now but just

  141. 6:10

because I feel like we also all look at

  142. 6:12

our own things going like oh well I

  143. 6:14

should I should be doing this or I

  144. 6:16

should be doing that but does does he

  145. 6:17

know that he has this tremendous body

  146. 6:20

good was he was he ever grouchy about it

  147. 6:22

at the time oh good question and

  148. 6:26

jie I'm doing a Counterpoint right yeah

  149. 6:29

    yeah

  150. 6:30

you're what actually sucks about Mar

  151. 6:33

yeah not nice person hasn't made me

  152. 6:35

    laugh I didn't I was just think

  153. 6:37

realizing this he was actually weirdly

  154. 6:38

    my first

  155. 6:40

SNL character I ever saw because I went

  156. 6:43

on a studio tour when I was young and I

  157. 6:47

saw Ed Grimley like in stuff backstage

  158. 6:50

or Pro like promotionally around and I

  159. 6:53

didn't even understand what it was at

  160. 6:55

the time but I always remembered it

  161. 6:57

being funny and and that was like my

  162. 6:59

first kind of character I saw there

  163. 7:02

before I watched the show what I wow and

  164. 7:05

I loved I mean Three Amigos I just loved

  165. 7:08

those and and my grandpa so couldn't

  166. 7:11

understand Three Amigos and my brother

  167. 7:13

and I watched it all the time and my

  168. 7:14

grandpa was just like what is this I

  169. 7:17

don't understand it we love that I guess

  170. 7:20

my questions are like I was wondering

  171. 7:22

did he have any did he have any like

  172. 7:23

rivals in comedy at different times in

  173. 7:26

his life do you think okay this is this

  174. 7:28

is a good question do you think I should

  175. 7:30

be asking these kinds of questions on

  176. 7:32

    this podcast because I think Marty's a

  177. 7:35

great person to try it out on because

  178. 7:36

he'll he he's so kind of graceful I also

  179. 7:40

think I just watched that um that weird

  180. 7:42

year documentary and I also would be

  181. 7:45

curious to hear a little bit of that one

  182. 7:47

one year in that cast on SNL and was

  183. 7:51

like there I don't know if you talk

  184. 7:51

about this either but like for the SC

  185. 7:53

SCV cast were they were people like

  186. 7:55

hooking up in that cast too the way

  187. 7:57

there was like early SNL you know what I

  188. 7:59

    mean

  189. 8:00

I don't know that's yes dude so Jo your

  190. 8:03

questions are who was your biggest enemy

  191. 8:06

and who did you hook up with okay those

  192. 8:09

are great those are I'll start with

  193. 8:12

those Maya thanks for taking a break in

  194. 8:15

the middle of your show Amy this was a

  195. 8:17

really good hang thanks Maya whoa great

  196. 8:21

hang great hang good hang that's my show

  197. 8:24

my Show's great hang damn that's gonna

  198. 8:27

be better no I just I I disagree it does

  199. 8:30

    sound better it does sound

  200. 8:33

better this episode is brought to you by

  201. 8:35

Uber Eats Uber Eats is delivering game

  202. 8:38

day deals because you can't watch eight

  203. 8:40

hours of basketball a day on an empty

  204. 8:42

stomach I love to watch TV on my couch

  205. 8:46

and then never get back up and so once

  206. 8:48

I'm down it's hard to uh to stand and I

  207. 8:52

definitely don't want to drive and get

  208. 8:53

food so Uber Eats delivers my food to me

  209. 8:57

and then I shuffle over to my door and

  210. 8:59

in my pajamas and I grab the food so

  211. 9:01

whatever you're craving Uber Eats has

  212. 9:02

deals on all your game day favorites you

  213. 9:04

never have to miss a single buzzer

  214. 9:06

beater get game day deals on all your

  215. 9:09

favorites only on Uber Eats order

  216. 9:13

nowo I want you to know you're one of

  217. 9:16

    the first

  218. 9:19

three well you know that makes me feel

  219. 9:22

good thank you it was I don't feel like

  220. 9:24

I got any time with you at the SNL 50th

  221. 9:26

well the only thing we got was Co you

  222. 9:29

know everyone got it okay not only do I

  223. 9:31

know that everyone got it but so we

  224. 9:33

we're doing this thing on the this

  225. 9:35

podcast where we're asking I'm ask

  226. 9:37

reaching out to people who know you or

  227. 9:39

like friends of yours or ours to ask

  228. 9:41

them what I should ask you so I just did

  229. 9:43

a zoom with Tina Maya and

  230. 9:47

Jo and all three of them have or had SNL

  231. 9:52

Co yeah they all got it yeah so did uh

  232. 9:56

so did um Amy Schumer yeah Merill dang

  233. 10:01

um Mike Myers now I've done scenes with

  234. 10:04

all of those people and I shared a

  235. 10:07

dressing room with Merill I did a scene

  236. 10:09

with Mike Myers and Maya you got nothing

  237. 10:12

I know but did you have a good time at

  238. 10:14

the like how was the experience oh it

  239. 10:16

was great the whole thing was great yeah

  240. 10:18

I mean on the Thursday Steve and I went

  241. 10:22

down to the comedy seller with Simon

  242. 10:25

Rich and John malany I mean to try out

  243. 10:28

material which is an insane idea because

  244. 10:31

as we were going down there I said to

  245. 10:32

Steve when was the last time you went to

  246. 10:33

a club like this you went uh

  247. 10:35

1966 so when they saw him they went

  248. 10:38

insane were they stilling not going to

  249. 10:40

laugh at his jokes of course everything

  250. 10:42

right but do you guys do your cuz I want

  251. 10:44

to talk about your tour that you do

  252. 10:46

because Tina and I are basically copying

  253. 10:47

what you're doing but um do you go on

  254. 10:50

the road and try out your stuff before

  255. 10:52

the tour yeah never never yeah I feel

  256. 10:54

like it's not a genuine you just can't

  257. 10:56

no no no no that's what you know Ali

  258. 10:59

Wong that the the great standups will do

  259. 11:02

that and and then they burn their

  260. 11:04

    material yeah you know I don't and I I I

  261. 11:07

kind of I think it's hard to get like an

  262. 11:08

honest laugh from like to your point the

  263. 11:10

audience is too hot yeah there's they're

  264. 11:13

really excited to see you in Steve's

  265. 11:15

case they're saying okay they're both

  266. 11:18

alive that's so weird so so much for

  267. 11:22

newspaper articles and so already you

  268. 11:25

have them you know there's a famous

  269. 11:26

story Jack Benny I think in his last

  270. 11:30

concert in England he was like 80 or

  271. 11:32

something and he came out and got a 12

  272. 11:34

minute standing ovation and then his

  273. 11:37

first line was I'm not that good you

  274. 11:40

know so there's an element of that I

  275. 11:42

wanted to talk to you about the

  276. 11:44

    congratulations are winning the SAG

  277. 11:46

award yeah two of them I know what you

  278. 11:48

mean you are nominated all the time and

  279. 11:51

you don't win and the time and then the

  280. 11:53

time that you win you're not there was

  281. 11:55

    that

  282. 11:56

    a was that a bummer I wasn't watching I

  283. 11:59

was watching the brutalist uhhuh sure

  284. 12:02

you watch it every night well you know

  285. 12:04

what it is yeah it's like Elon Musk you

  286. 12:07

need a positive sense of like a big warm

  287. 12:10

blanket around you before bedtime so you

  288. 12:13

always put on the brutalist I do that

  289. 12:14

    and then

  290. 12:16

prescriptions um yeah but yeah I start

  291. 12:19

with the brutalist uh no so then so then

  292. 12:21

someone said turn on and I was stunned I

  293. 12:24

mean it was like that's what Selena

  294. 12:26

Gomez said we always lose well I I I

  295. 12:30

related not to front door brag but I

  296. 12:33

have been nominated often and never win

  297. 12:36

never how many emm do you have only one

  298. 12:39

but I think I've been nominated let let

  299. 12:41

me pretend to not know the number

  300. 12:44

um no but it is something in the 20s

  301. 12:47

Steve says in our show I say how many

  302. 12:49

Emmys do you have he says I want to say

  303. 12:53

five I want to say five but I have one

  304. 12:59

but I was thinking about you because I

  305. 13:01

know for me every single time no matter

  306. 13:04

how much I've um tricked my brain into

  307. 13:08

knowing who cares it doesn't matter like

  308. 13:10

    there's this

  309. 13:12

    weird physiological moment that happens

  310. 13:15

when you're just the the Split Second

  311. 13:17

where you're thinking maybe I'll have to

  312. 13:18

go up there maybe I'll have to give a

  313. 13:20

speech does that happen to you um you

  314. 13:23

know it has happened to me certainly but

  315. 13:26

I will tell you in this experience of

  316. 13:28

only MERS in the building this we're

  317. 13:29

    starting our fifth season absolutely

  318. 13:32

never had a consideration in fact that

  319. 13:35

you were going to win no no not remotely

  320. 13:38

    in fact

  321. 13:39

um um I think that some you know the

  322. 13:43

publicist send you things and they were

  323. 13:45

yeah sag predictions and there were like

  324. 13:46

three other people gold Derby races or

  325. 13:48

whatever and there were there was always

  326. 13:50

like well if it isn't Jeremy Allen White

  327. 13:52

I'll tell you it will be Jason you know

  328. 13:54

seagull I mean it was like you were

  329. 13:56

never even close so how did you win the

  330. 13:58

SAG what did you who who did you sleep

  331. 14:00

    with I guess I'm a beloved I'm guess you

  332. 14:02

know I guess the actors stupid icon give

  333. 14:06

it to the actors and they'll vote for

  334. 14:08

anybody leave it to actors they'll vote

  335. 14:10

for anybody no but I mean I was bummed

  336. 14:12

to see you not be up there but I was

  337. 14:14

wondering if you cared I certainly it

  338. 14:17

would have been thrilling to be there

  339. 14:18

but I do find that stuff of you have to

  340. 14:20

get up and did you forget a name and I

  341. 14:22

agree then if you pull out a piece of

  342. 14:24

paper you're a wimp and you don't have

  343. 14:25

any Soul you know I saw Timothy shalam

  344. 14:28

just speak totally yeah he killed it he

  345. 14:31

was so good and what I'm going to do

  346. 14:32

next time if I ever win again okay I'm

  347. 14:35

going to get up there and lower the mic

  348. 14:37

so that I can lean down to it like he

  349. 14:40

    did that's a power move yeah it's a

  350. 14:42

power move talk like this when you're

  351. 14:44

when you're this length when you're this

  352. 14:46

lanky yeah you know and I agree you

  353. 14:50

either have to kind of freeball it and

  354. 14:52

just be you know off the top of your

  355. 14:55

head and just talk about how you're

  356. 14:57

feeling or you have to have really good

  357. 14:59

jokes the in between is stressful right

  358. 15:02

the in between is stressful and then

  359. 15:03

also leaving up that name yeah like oh I

  360. 15:08

forgot to thank Selena yeah right that

  361. 15:12

would be would that would that be the

  362. 15:13

kind of thing that would keep you up I

  363. 15:15

would feel badly and she would say it's

  364. 15:18

cool there's no one cooler than Selena

  365. 15:20

yeah you know she is so cool she is so

  366. 15:22

Co how did you guys what I mean I'm sure

  367. 15:24

you've told this story many times in

  368. 15:25

other places but never to me when well

  369. 15:28

because you just started a podcast

  370. 15:29

that's right yeah that's right exactly

  371. 15:31

um and usually when I see you at parties

  372. 15:33

you're a little bit removed yeah yeah

  373. 15:37

it's like um looking over the shoulder I

  374. 15:40

just want to see if there's another more

  375. 15:41

famous person there m Myers here yeah

  376. 15:43

yeah I don't like to I like to not

  377. 15:45

settle in until I find the alpha in the

  378. 15:47

room and then oh I know oh I know and

  379. 15:50

I've talked to people who know and I

  380. 15:52

    won't elaborate on

  381. 15:54

that but the the um only murders how did

  382. 15:59

Selena get like how did you guys get her

  383. 16:02

did was she attached with you at the

  384. 16:04

same time no no no no it started off um

  385. 16:07

Steve was at a party at Sandy

  386. 16:10

gallon I don't know 13 years ago and

  387. 16:14

sitting on the couch was um Ron riffen

  388. 16:19

    Joel

  389. 16:20

    gray

  390. 16:23

and someone else and Sandy said that

  391. 16:27

those three you should do a show for for

  392. 16:29

them that's all he said and Steve's

  393. 16:31

driving home and he's obsessed with True

  394. 16:33

Crime and watches it all the time and

  395. 16:36

thought well the tell that's an

  396. 16:37

interesting idea three older people who

  397. 16:40

solve crimes in a building but they'll

  398. 16:43

only solve a murder in the building

  399. 16:45

because they don't want to travel and he

  400. 16:47

had the title he had everything and then

  401. 16:48

he put it on the back shelf for a few

  402. 16:51

years and then uh had a meeting with Dan

  403. 16:54

fogam and Dan said any ideas you have

  404. 16:56

and he said well I have this one idea

  405. 16:58

and it was L into production how it got

  406. 17:00

    to be Selena I don't I I don't actually

  407. 17:03

know I know that um Steve phoned me and

  408. 17:06

said would you like to do it and I

  409. 17:08

thought it sounded great and you know it

  410. 17:09

was work yeah you know uh if he had said

  411. 17:12

you want to do the the Chrysler

  412. 17:14

industrial mainly for we're bringing at

  413. 17:16

the duster we're bring that car back I'd

  414. 17:18

say sure and you say you say that

  415. 17:22

    there's a check is that what you're

  416. 17:24

inferring Steve no anyway so I was

  417. 17:27

excited to say yes and then uh then

  418. 17:29

brilliantly they went to Selena you know

  419. 17:31

if they'd gone with someone another

  420. 17:33

older person it would be Murder She

  421. 17:35

Wrote yes it's so smart it's so smart

  422. 17:38

yeah it's so smart and I'm just curious

  423. 17:40

and maybe maybe I can have her on here

  424. 17:42

and ask like what is the Bob Balaban

  425. 17:45

that was the third guy oh yeah Bob

  426. 17:46

    Balaban I

  427. 17:47

love they were three on a couch he's

  428. 17:49

such a good actor um i' be so curious

  429. 17:52

about like what made Selena sign on for

  430. 17:54

another TV show it must have been you

  431. 17:56

and Steve she must have known she was

  432. 17:58

signing on to something Premier and

  433. 18:00

funny she has that taste you know I'm

  434. 18:03

    sure I I mean i' I've told this before

  435. 18:06

but certainly the first day of shooting

  436. 18:08

it was um we were in the height of covid

  437. 18:11

first day of shooting yeah so we had to

  438. 18:13

wear Shields and masks and yeah and um

  439. 18:17

so I had never uh met her we had zoomed

  440. 18:21

in read throughs and stuff and I'm

  441. 18:23

driving to work thinking well she could

  442. 18:25

    be a nightmare yeah she I mean she's a

  443. 18:29

princess she's since she was 14 what if

  444. 18:32

she's I thought oh if she's late forget

  445. 18:35

it Steve will quit cuz that's is Aisa

  446. 18:38

well what if she doesn't know her lines

  447. 18:39

or what if she's what if she's mean to

  448. 18:41

people and all those things go to thread

  449. 18:44

and literally I met her in the makeup

  450. 18:47

room and I she smiled I thought okay

  451. 18:50

she's just adorable and she has never

  452. 18:51

been a second late she is such a pro

  453. 18:54

it's a joke and then all these endless

  454. 18:56

guest STS we've had year after year have

  455. 18:58

all been again impeccable maybe um

  456. 19:02

they're afraid of Steve I think

  457. 19:04

interesting well maybe we have that in

  458. 19:06

common because I feel like people are

  459. 19:08

    afraid of

  460. 19:10

Tina and not afraid of me and I want

  461. 19:13

them to be more afraid of me no no

  462. 19:15

they're never going to be more afraid of

  463. 19:17

you but do you want people to be more

  464. 19:18

afraid of you or do you like that

  465. 19:19

they're afraid of Steve no I like Steve

  466. 19:21

is like the pope you know I mean some of

  467. 19:25

these famous comic types they they like

  468. 19:28

me it's fine but when Dave Letterman or

  469. 19:31

Howard Stern is around Steve or or Jerry

  470. 19:34

    Seinfeld it's

  471. 19:35

like hi Steve yeah yeah and I don't know

  472. 19:40

why because I know why I think it's

  473. 19:43

because Steve just doesn't talk as I

  474. 19:46

think the power move is to not talk as

  475. 19:49

much that's what I like the the quieter

  476. 19:52

you are so that's my big problem is

  477. 19:54

you're that's your problem and this is

  478. 19:55

my problem Y Yak y y yak yak

  479. 19:59

and we're like hey this is this is me

  480. 20:01

this is me this is me and you just have

  481. 20:02

to stay quiet and everybody projects

  482. 20:05

    everything on you so you're

  483. 20:08

saying that's like a line in the movie

  484. 20:10

jimy Glick and lwood hold for Applause

  485. 20:13

um best we improvised a great deal and

  486. 20:16

    Jan

  487. 20:17

    Hooks uh Elizabeth Perkins was

  488. 20:19

complaining that her husband needed sex

  489. 20:22

three times a day and she said oh honey

  490. 20:25

I'll tell you you got to get a blow up

  491. 20:27

thing because listen had four kids

  492. 20:29

    [ __ ] me is like [ __ ] a

  493. 20:31

purse and you'd s saw Elizabeth Perkins

  494. 20:34

shake her hand cuz she was supposed to

  495. 20:36

be drinking bring it up to her mouth so

  496. 20:38

she doesn't spoil the take and I said

  497. 20:40

Dixie remember when we discussed the

  498. 20:42

    word

  499. 20:48

    Mystique Jiminy Glick

  500. 20:51

    Marty well let's just let's focus a

  501. 20:54

second on Jan Hooks let's FOC okay

  502. 20:56

you're right let's talk about was

  503. 20:59

than Jen hooks there were a few women at

  504. 21:03

that SNL 50th that I was really missing

  505. 21:06

that I really wish I could meet because

  506. 21:08

I have never met one of them was Gilda

  507. 21:09

and the other was Jan never met either

  508. 21:12

    one never met

  509. 21:14

Jan and she was she was the like the you

  510. 21:19

know Kristen wig or Kate McKinnon of the

  511. 21:21

cast when I was growing up Jan was so

  512. 21:25

talented so such a good actress so funny

  513. 21:29

and moving we did a special together in

  514. 21:31

95 where she played everyone everyone

  515. 21:34

from David Letterman's mother she played

  516. 21:37

Brett Butler that was so so good so

  517. 21:40

vicious she's so good yeah yeah I missed

  518. 21:44

her and I loved Lorraine and Jane

  519. 21:47

holding up Gilda's picture oh I love

  520. 21:49

that love that I loved that yeah I had a

  521. 21:52

great moment with Lorraine and Jane

  522. 21:53

    where I I I didn't know Lorraine that

  523. 21:56

well I've just kind of like seen her at

  524. 21:58

events over the years and we I felt very

  525. 22:01

um bonded with her by the end of the

  526. 22:04

weekend I don't know if she felt the

  527. 22:04

same way about me but she was just I

  528. 22:06

know she didn't she didn't I asked her

  529. 22:08

damn it I said who did you bond with who

  530. 22:12

didn't you bond with and she well she

  531. 22:15

opens up with the the word surprise

  532. 22:17

    surprise so which shocked

  533. 22:20

me she didn't like you she didn't I

  534. 22:23

    could feel I could feel

  535. 22:25

it kept nodding her head no she said I'm

  536. 22:27

not a fan of the chatty chat she was

  537. 22:30

like I wish she was quieter oh my God

  538. 22:32

she said like Steve Martin like I'll

  539. 22:35

tell you they make you you know I wanted

  540. 22:36

me is Tina F totally yeah um damn it I

  541. 22:40

felt that I felt that because but she

  542. 22:43

her and Jane she shared two things with

  543. 22:45

me that I loved one was just a small

  544. 22:47

detail but I loved it she's like Jane

  545. 22:48

and I are getting ready together which I

  546. 22:51

    just love that's a very that's a very

  547. 22:53

girl thing like who are you getting

  548. 22:54

doing hair and makeup with for the party

  549. 22:57

and Jane and lorine were getting ready

  550. 22:58

together which just warmed my heart like

  551. 23:00

I love that and also they just both

  552. 23:03

    seemed great

  553. 23:05

and uh I was like I said you two look

  554. 23:09

great you seem great and we kind of had

  555. 23:11

a moment where we said you know women

  556. 23:13

know how to age like they can they do

  557. 23:15

better with aging than men well some do

  558. 23:21

most um you disagree well okay let's

  559. 23:27

let's put it this way if

  560. 23:29

go yeah if you're talking about someone

  561. 23:31

    who's had I said suture who's had 15

  562. 23:34

facelifts but yes but and then has that

  563. 23:36

look but that's I think I think we get a

  564. 23:39

little confused that well maybe I'm

  565. 23:41

wrong but we live in Los Angeles we see

  566. 23:43

that a lot but the rest of like your

  567. 23:46

average people in country I'm sure I'm

  568. 23:49

sure women T like look at women look at

  569. 23:51

men and women when they turn 50 it's it

  570. 23:54

can be diffic it's I don't know every

  571. 23:57

school reun high school reun I went to

  572. 23:59

the women look pretty great and the men

  573. 24:02

they look bad terrible why okay here's

  574. 24:05

    what okay here's what's not

  575. 24:07

good gald is tough and that's that that

  576. 24:12

    I don't even mind who's the most

  577. 24:13

handsome bald person uh Paul schaer Paul

  578. 24:19

schaer bald person fabulous yes so he um

  579. 24:23

I say of Paul that I've known him since

  580. 24:25

72 and even in 70 two he looked like a

  581. 24:29

    Mater D in a

  582. 24:36

spaceship um Anna and will killed as

  583. 24:39

Bobby and Marty at that music oh my God

  584. 24:42

was there anything funny and I said to

  585. 24:43

will after I said okay did that take you

  586. 24:46

two months or three months he said we

  587. 24:47

learned it today today and Anna was

  588. 24:50

doing a great impression of um of Paul

  589. 24:53

playing them the part because it was

  590. 24:55

like he was playing yeah 45

  591. 24:59

45 songs at once and it was a complete

  592. 25:02

chaos and they crushed it and to

  593. 25:04

me Tina and I were talking about this

  594. 25:06

after to me there was something very

  595. 25:08

proud of like I felt very proud of all

  596. 25:11

of us I don't know why but it felt like

  597. 25:13

a win for all of us that these two great

  598. 25:15

sketch comedians came out I mean I feel

  599. 25:17

this way when I watch you work and when

  600. 25:19

you and Steve are together like can come

  601. 25:21

out and just settle a crowd and just it

  602. 25:23

just own the room there's a joy when

  603. 25:28

people people are not nervous God I love

  604. 25:32

    so abolutely and

  605. 25:35

    also neither

  606. 25:37

character or forget actor but neither

  607. 25:40

character they were playing was trying

  608. 25:41

to be funny yeah they weren't trying to

  609. 25:44

they weren't saying laugh at they were

  610. 25:45

just being sincere in who they were and

  611. 25:49

it was oh my God was that a Triumph I

  612. 25:52

    thought Bill Murray killed yeah

  613. 25:54

everybody was incredible how about Maya

  614. 25:56

    and

  615. 25:58

friends incredible like Fred can do

  616. 26:01

    these physical things the slightest

  617. 26:03

there is no one funnier than Fred I

  618. 26:05

agree this is what Fred said to

  619. 26:08

me this is what first of all well this

  620. 26:11

is visual but every his dressing room is

  621. 26:13

beside me so I would pass his room and

  622. 26:17

he'd be on his phone I'd say hey Fred

  623. 26:18

    and he

  624. 26:21

go say Fred you're not really asleep oh

  625. 26:24

oh I'm oh hi how long have you been here

  626. 26:26

Fred I just saw you on the and the other

  627. 26:28

thing he did which he completely

  628. 26:30

convinced me was true was um when I left

  629. 26:35

    the stage after the good

  630. 26:37

nights he said why did you call Paul

  631. 26:40

    McCartney Tony

  632. 26:43

    McCartney I said I

  633. 26:47

what yeah I mean you said oh Tony

  634. 26:51

McCartney and because I didn't know Paul

  635. 26:54

was standing beside me I thought did I

  636. 26:58

and such a funny joke then I told Bill

  637. 27:00

herter this and Bill told Fred and Fred

  638. 27:02

sent me a text like a couple days ago

  639. 27:04

sorry I'm so I thought you knew that was

  640. 27:06

a joke I literally thought I'd said Tony

  641. 27:08

McCartney the stupidest thing in the

  642. 27:10

Tony McCartney Tony McCartney I wish I

  643. 27:12

said it of course you know not knowing

  644. 27:15

Paul's name Fred used to send me long

  645. 27:17

texts about his flight schedule like

  646. 27:19

when he was arriving what airport what

  647. 27:21

time to get picked up as if I was

  648. 27:22

picking him up from the airport he is so

  649. 27:25

deeply funny he also does a bit that I

  650. 27:27

love where if you haven't seen him for a

  651. 27:28

long time at a party and you go hey

  652. 27:30

Freddy goes Hi how are you like he

  653. 27:32

pretends you're just a fan bothering him

  654. 27:34

he's so funny he loves a bit he does a

  655. 27:38

million of them too and everyone's funny

  656. 27:40

yeah but people feel that way about you

  657. 27:42

    people feel like the

  658. 27:45

way even we were talking earlier with

  659. 27:48

Maya and Tina and Jo like people feel

  660. 27:50

that way about you Marty of all the

  661. 27:52

funny people people think you're the

  662. 27:53

funniest I don't think so because okay

  663. 27:57

well okay thank you but I find that I

  664. 27:59

find what I do with like fred is if it's

  665. 28:03

at a party I'll say Do You Hear What

  666. 28:04

Fred said yeah there's a lot of did you

  667. 28:06

hear what Fred said I I agree that I

  668. 28:09

think Fred is like genuinely one of the

  669. 28:11

    funniest people I know

  670. 28:14

but I think you are too the thing that I

  671. 28:18

love about watching you is and I don't

  672. 28:21

know maybe you're faking it but I feel

  673. 28:22

like the lesson I learned at SNL and

  674. 28:24

Beyond is if you are enjoying yourself

  675. 28:28

people will enjoy themselves oh I

  676. 28:30

absolutely but the people don't really

  677. 28:32

apply that often into the work that they

  678. 28:33

do and even into the comedy that they do

  679. 28:35

well some people can't hide it you know

  680. 28:37

I used to think that even if I was if I

  681. 28:39

was at work and I was feeling low about

  682. 28:42

something I would do an impersonation of

  683. 28:43

myself happy yeah and then that would

  684. 28:46

get me happier like when I started doing

  685. 28:48

talk shows I I I kept thinking first

  686. 28:50

time I did a an you know important

  687. 28:53

American talk show would be December of

  688. 28:55

    82 Letterman mhm 12:30 show and I

  689. 28:58

thought what is the gimmick here oh I

  690. 29:01

got to do an impersonation of myself at

  691. 29:04

a dinner party really loose and having

  692. 29:06

fun but I got to get it down to8 minutes

  693. 29:09

you know yeah that's deep I remember

  694. 29:12

Lauren telling me when I was doing

  695. 29:14

update you have to do a version of

  696. 29:16

yourself for update that's yeah yeah a

  697. 29:19

removed version of yourself or are you

  698. 29:21

    doing lip are you doing

  699. 29:23

lip nothing worse than dry lips is it I

  700. 29:28

get them constantly it's actually a

  701. 29:30

problem of mine I love that you needed

  702. 29:32

me to do it to feel free that you could

  703. 29:34

    do it yeah I mean I can't I can't do it

  704. 29:36

that's too rude but if my guest pulls

  705. 29:37

out lip balm now what if you looked over

  706. 29:40

and I had bright red lips I wor red

  707. 29:42

    lipstick I love a lip

  708. 29:44

balm uh it's one of the things about La

  709. 29:47

that really crushes me is how dry it is

  710. 29:48

here very dry are is this your homebased

  711. 29:51

la like this his home no I was born and

  712. 29:53

raised in Hamilton Ontario Canada and

  713. 29:57

then uh when when I was 22 I moved to

  714. 30:00

Toronto which is 40 Mi east of of

  715. 30:03

Hamilton I've been to some of those

  716. 30:04

Lakes you talk about outside of Toronto

  717. 30:06

and it does not get warm ever it doesn't

  718. 30:10

it does I was there mid August this is

  719. 30:14

and I this is and it was about 55

  720. 30:16

degrees I know but this is going to be

  721. 30:18

sorry okay well I'm going to say it and

  722. 30:19

I'm going all be criticized and but it's

  723. 30:22

a real girl thing to say to be cold yeah

  724. 30:25

    how dare you you [ __ ]

  725. 30:28

    I do a cold plunge [ __ ] every

  726. 30:32

day okay but let me say something know

  727. 30:34

again I got to get in trouble again but

  728. 30:37

a girl sing to be cold no one's going to

  729. 30:40

be mad about that a girl calls a cold

  730. 30:43

plunge is not what a guy call God I'm

  731. 30:48

    doubling like I don't consider I don't

  732. 30:51

consider 71 a cold pun yeah I mean when

  733. 30:53

I say cold punch I mean oh God no not

  734. 30:56

like real coal without my socks on

  735. 30:59

    that's a cold plunge no I have a high

  736. 31:02

tolerance for cold I proudly got into

  737. 31:06

cold plunging like five years ago and I

  738. 31:08

do it all the time now like every good

  739. 31:10

podc I'm I'm I'm you know decades older

  740. 31:12

than you I would think that I'd say I'm

  741. 31:14

going to do a cold plunge

  742. 31:17

and and be dead and dead be dead just

  743. 31:20

floating right in that cold punch no I

  744. 31:23

slowly built up it was during covid and

  745. 31:25

I was genuinely I was so what what

  746. 31:28

    temperature did you start truthfully

  747. 31:30

truthfully uh I I was so anxious and and

  748. 31:33

depressed during covid that I was trying

  749. 31:36

all these different things and so I

  750. 31:37

would do the sauna and the cold plunge

  751. 31:39

was about 48 49 degrees and how cold

  752. 31:42

would you get it now same I don't do it

  753. 31:45

any colder I maybe the coldness is like

  754. 31:48

    47 right that's cold it's cold and I

  755. 31:51

started by just like going in and out in

  756. 31:53

and out for years and then building up

  757. 31:56

and now I can do a couple of minutes and

  758. 31:58

it is com I cannot recommend it enough

  759. 32:01

how about just a cup of coffee just a

  760. 32:03

lovely cup of coffee in the morning you

  761. 32:06

know I want to talk about your tour

  762. 32:07

because Tina and I are on tour and we

  763. 32:10

asked you for advice I don't know if you

  764. 32:12

remember or maybe we probably sent some

  765. 32:15

glip you did you said well you said you

  766. 32:16

gave good advice you gave a lot of good

  767. 32:18

advice but because we've been doing a

  768. 32:21

show on tour it's been the best it is

  769. 32:25

dream come true fun well this is what it

  770. 32:26

is this is what it is

  771. 32:28

because you and Tina love each

  772. 32:30

    other then there's a rehearsal there's

  773. 32:33

    laughs there's a dinner yeah there's

  774. 32:35

perhaps a glass of wine afterwards MH so

  775. 32:39

it is kind of like as much fun as it can

  776. 32:41

be because you're happy to see everybody

  777. 32:44

and I know this sounds silly but because

  778. 32:46

    I was never a touring

  779. 32:49

    standup or a musician I don't think I

  780. 32:51

ever sold tickets where people knew they

  781. 32:55

were going to get me you know I was

  782. 32:57

either part of an Ensemble part of a

  783. 32:59

sketch group part of an improv show or I

  784. 33:01

was hosting something that it wasn't so

  785. 33:04

the the fact that people show up already

  786. 33:07

knowing that you are who they want to

  787. 33:09

see is it it just gets so much out of

  788. 33:11

way well that's why you know you've done

  789. 33:13

corporate dates and things now they can

  790. 33:15

be tricky because they're not showing up

  791. 33:18

for you they're showing up cuz you know

  792. 33:20

    they work for

  793. 33:21

    tide and so

  794. 33:24

um you kind of have to be prepared for

  795. 33:27

    hi everybody

  796. 33:30

nothing and not take it personally yeah

  797. 33:33

oh yeah I mean but when you when when

  798. 33:35

people have paid to see you it's it's

  799. 33:37

great compliment and they're happy to be

  800. 33:39

there and I know it's it's the silliest

  801. 33:41

most obvious thing but I realized our

  802. 33:42

first show oh people knew it was going

  803. 33:44

to be just us yes that's right and they

  804. 33:47

    paid to see us and there's a like a a a

  805. 33:51

    honest exchange between your performance

  806. 33:54

and their ticket like I do the show for

  807. 33:57

you you come and pay for it like it

  808. 33:59

feels very honest whereas I feel well

  809. 34:01

see that's the other thing I think that

  810. 34:03

if if and Steve is similar to me and I

  811. 34:06

know that Tina and you are the same if

  812. 34:09

you felt or if I felt that Steve was

  813. 34:12

kind of walking through it that night

  814. 34:14

then I'd say you know what this has been

  815. 34:16

great we did it but we can't do it

  816. 34:18

anymore because that would and vice

  817. 34:21

versa he would like be stunned so I

  818. 34:24

think that that there are certain things

  819. 34:26

in in Partnerships that goes with

  820. 34:27

without saying it and that commitment to

  821. 34:29

understanding that people not only paid

  822. 34:32

a lot of money they got a babysitter mhm

  823. 34:34

there was a dinner maybe you know it's

  824. 34:38

yeah we have like tons of women who come

  825. 34:40

with their friends or mothers who are

  826. 34:42

bringing their daughters this is the

  827. 34:44

their night out for the month they hotel

  828. 34:47

room and um and we're the same when we

  829. 34:51

were done with the show we look at each

  830. 34:52

other and we're like we gave them a good

  831. 34:53

show like that's what we feel good about

  832. 34:56

    yeah I know I I it's but I must admit

  833. 34:59

    especially doing different Broadway

  834. 35:01

shows through the years I've rarely

  835. 35:04

met anyone that just wouldn't walk

  836. 35:07

through it I'm always amazed when I go

  837. 35:09

to a Broadway musical and it's let's say

  838. 35:12

Wednesday mat and it's maybe not the

  839. 35:15

greatest musical you still can't believe

  840. 35:17

the talent on stage I know the level of

  841. 35:19

the work like they're working like it

  842. 35:21

was opening night yeah and I don't think

  843. 35:23

their computer knows how to do it

  844. 35:24

differently what was it like like I we

  845. 35:28

like a lot of people in comedy i i i

  846. 35:30

obsess about those early Toronto days

  847. 35:32

and you all together and that was crazy

  848. 35:35

crazy I mean one of the questions Jo

  849. 35:37

    wanted me to ask you

  850. 35:40

was who who was sleeping together that

  851. 35:43

    we didn't know

  852. 35:44

about you don't have to answer but he

  853. 35:47

wanted me to ask you but oh I used to be

  854. 35:49

able to there's a big picture of the god

  855. 35:51

spell cast and I can go day by

  856. 35:55

    day day by day

  857. 35:59

oh dear lord three things I pray no it

  858. 36:01

    was the

  859. 36:05

70s yes it's so good I mean that that

  860. 36:08

period of time with all the people that

  861. 36:10

you were there with because you were

  862. 36:11

there with who Paul Paul I was there

  863. 36:14

with Paul Gilda y um Andrea Martin yes

  864. 36:19

um Victor Garber Eugene Levy we were on

  865. 36:22

the same cast wild and I remember Steven

  866. 36:25

Schwarz it was down it really like 500

  867. 36:27

people was like American Idol the whole

  868. 36:28

day was the call back day and friends

  869. 36:31

were at the back cheering on friends

  870. 36:34

and you know Gilda got up there and and

  871. 36:37

bib overalls and with pigtails on either

  872. 36:41

side going and saying Zippity Do and I

  873. 36:44

thought oh that's the saddest thing I've

  874. 36:47

ever and they said you're hired and I

  875. 36:48

thought oh I maybe have to rethink cuz

  876. 36:52

I'm doing My Funny Valentine so I don't

  877. 36:55

know but it was just she was exact what

  878. 36:57

they were looking for M and um and then

  879. 37:00

we all just got but I remember Steven

  880. 37:03

Schwarz it was down to about 12 people

  881. 37:06

and it was between me and another guy do

  882. 37:08

you remember the guy I no I want to call

  883. 37:10

him say his name is Andrew I never saw

  884. 37:12

him again but I just remember Steven

  885. 37:13

Schwarz who was like 24 at the time

  886. 37:15

himself went like this Andrew you're so

  887. 37:19

so good but I think we're going to go

  888. 37:22

with Martin and I'm still in University

  889. 37:24

it was like wow so Eugene and I who are

  890. 37:27

friends went back and there was a pay

  891. 37:29

phone we kept borrowing each other's

  892. 37:31

dimes and phoning people and tell them

  893. 37:33

what happened and it was a dream now you

  894. 37:35

weren't in University anymore now you

  895. 37:37

didn't have to study more any more exams

  896. 37:40

you could stay up as late as you want

  897. 37:42

you could drink beer at the end of the

  898. 37:44

show and he told you in real time pretty

  899. 37:47

wild right at the end of the day we knew

  900. 37:49

wow wow wow wow that was unbelievable I

  901. 37:52

mean can I can I ask you a little bit

  902. 37:54

about Gilda because we talked about Jam

  903. 37:55

but yeah I like the things I hear about

  904. 37:58

Gilda and just might be my projection

  905. 38:01

but I just feel like I would really love

  906. 38:03

her oh you have been mad loveely what I

  907. 38:06

can't always balance is like how like

  908. 38:09

you you said something about her one

  909. 38:11

time about like she just was so

  910. 38:13

comfortable with her own just the story

  911. 38:15

you told her own weirdness and

  912. 38:17

strangeness like her own like she really

  913. 38:19

knew she was just you know what she was

  914. 38:21

just every you know I've said this

  915. 38:23

before but every girl wanted to be her

  916. 38:25

best friend yeah and every guy wanted to

  917. 38:28

go out with her I remember she came up

  918. 38:30

to the first rehearsal and said hi Marty

  919. 38:32

I'm so happy to be here and she had her

  920. 38:35

finger on her forehead and it's I said

  921. 38:37

okay good I knew she was doing a Dr then

  922. 38:39

she pulled and she had a big pimple

  923. 38:41

here she was just so original the size

  924. 38:45

of her purse the fullness of her hair

  925. 38:49

    yeah

  926. 38:51

um and you know I I fell for Her Madly

  927. 38:56

yeah tell me more about that well we

  928. 39:00

just because it's just like it's just so

  929. 39:03

sweet I mean oh no no when she was you

  930. 39:05

know she was how old were you when you

  931. 39:07

guys each was younger I was 22 to her 26

  932. 39:13

wow and um and we went uh we would break

  933. 39:15

up and get back but over a couple years

  934. 39:17

what what kind of attachment styles did

  935. 39:19

    you

  936. 39:20

    have what does that

  937. 39:23

mean do you have an hour but um do you

  938. 39:27

were you anxious anxiously attached were

  939. 39:29

you an avoidant no no no no no no no no

  940. 39:32

no in fact I'll tell you exactly what is

  941. 39:35

very interesting Gilda had you know

  942. 39:37

emotional ups and downs and I had just

  943. 39:40

gone through a period where my parents

  944. 39:42

had died right and my mother had died

  945. 39:45

and all she wanted to do was live and

  946. 39:46

she was the happiest person in the world

  947. 39:48

so to me one of the issues that Guild

  948. 39:51

and I had where we'd have fights about

  949. 39:53

    was I

  950. 39:54

think what do you have to be not happy

  951. 39:57

about you're talented you're you have

  952. 40:00

family money you everyone loves you

  953. 40:03

everyone wants to be your friend

  954. 40:05

everyone wants to date you no one is

  955. 40:08

funnier you get the biggest laughs of

  956. 40:10

    anyone on

  957. 40:11

stage you know but I was only 22 you

  958. 40:14

know I didn't understand you know I mean

  959. 40:17

look we're learning a lot of things

  960. 40:19

about gals today one is they can't

  961. 40:23

handle cold and the other is we' not

  962. 40:25

learned that not learned duh mood

  963. 40:31

swings so I mean I'll like make a list

  964. 40:34

of the things I've learned about you say

  965. 40:35

something really beautiful which is you

  966. 40:37

did have a you had a lot of loss early

  967. 40:39

in your life and you learned that lesson

  968. 40:41

that some people learn and take away

  969. 40:43

which is you know we are here once you

  970. 40:46

got to figure you know like we have to

  971. 40:48

enjoy life TR I've never understood

  972. 40:51

why for some reason cuz my my brother

  973. 40:54

died when I was 12 my mother when I was

  974. 40:55

    17 my father at 20

  975. 40:59

why I didn't become victim of that why I

  976. 41:01

became oddly empowered by it to the

  977. 41:04

point that I could be on stage and put

  978. 41:07

my hair up in a point and

  979. 41:09

say I think it's funny you know totally

  980. 41:12

I mean and not be did they like me I

  981. 41:15

don't know I do they I was never that

  982. 41:19

and I think because I grew up in a very

  983. 41:20

funny family I was youngest of five

  984. 41:23

Irish Catholic and if they liked you

  985. 41:27

that's all you cared about you didn't

  986. 41:28

really you just might have been built

  987. 41:30

that way they're just like your nervous

  988. 41:31

system was right and some people um

  989. 41:35

    understandably become you know victims

  990. 41:38

of of these tough situations but don't

  991. 41:41

you feel like that's the I mean for me

  992. 41:42

anyway that is the thing about getting

  993. 41:44

older is realizing oh the the simple

  994. 41:47

lesson over and over again that we all

  995. 41:49

process differently like I cannot get

  996. 41:52

someone to be happy if they're not or I

  997. 41:55

can't or I can't get my and as a parent

  998. 41:59

you know because we always want to solve

  999. 42:02

yeah yeah I mean there's some kind of

  1000. 42:05

version of that what you talk about that

  1001. 42:08

Joy of being alive that does come out in

  1002. 42:12

the stuff that you do and also what I

  1003. 42:16

love about you is you also play

  1004. 42:18

very how do I say this like sharp and um

  1005. 42:24

    biting characters like you're you're

  1006. 42:26

also really funny at playing people who

  1007. 42:28

are not rooting for you and but we love

  1008. 42:32

like okay jimy so jimy yeah no but I

  1009. 42:35

mean wouldn't we love morons with power

  1010. 42:37

we love you know that's a better way to

  1011. 42:39

say um people who I mean to me the the

  1012. 42:42

idea that Jiminy Glick was a guy who had

  1013. 42:44

a staff working for him and someone was

  1014. 42:47

afraid of screwing up the lunch order I

  1015. 42:49

said tuna when I say DJ Mustard does not

  1016. 42:53

mean frenches and they're quivering you

  1017. 42:55

know it's kind of like MH can you

  1018. 42:57

imagine the staff when they leave after

  1019. 43:01

delivering Trump his 48th thing of

  1020. 43:03

    Kentucky Fried Chicken what they're

  1021. 43:05

privately saying MH I don't call this

  1022. 43:09

hot yes sir and Germany to me is a very

  1023. 43:13

familiar person in the in the world that

  1024. 43:16

the past 20 30 years of like press that

  1025. 43:18

I've had to do compl that kind of person

  1026. 43:21

who to your point king of his kingdom

  1027. 43:24

king of his kingdom and you come to them

  1028. 43:26

and this this is how we do things and

  1029. 43:28

they're inquisitive but like mean and

  1030. 43:32

they they ha F from Kids in the Hall

  1031. 43:35

said Marty oh you finally created a

  1032. 43:37

character who's as mean as you really

  1033. 43:39

are in life well but that's like I think

  1034. 43:41

that's what I'm getting to is I do you

  1035. 43:44

think you are meaner than people think

  1036. 43:46

you are probably but I think that you

  1037. 43:49

know my father was sarcastic and Irish

  1038. 43:52

and mean I mean I I remember taping um

  1039. 43:55

recording two half hours of present

  1040. 43:58

opening on Christmas morning and you

  1041. 43:59

hear my father oh Michael what a lovely

  1042. 44:02

I wonder what Michael would give you if

  1043. 44:03

he had money you know it was like oh

  1044. 44:05

yeah was just all that stuff but teasing

  1045. 44:07

is a love language yes yes yes that's

  1046. 44:09

what I do for people so but there were

  1047. 44:12

the thing that was weird for me doing

  1048. 44:13

jimy Glick was that because it was

  1049. 44:16

improvised I would say things that even

  1050. 44:19

shocked me afterwards like I remember

  1051. 44:21

    interviewing Edie

  1052. 44:22

Falco and she was in the middle of an

  1053. 44:25

answer and I went sh just cuz I asked

  1054. 44:27

you a question does not mean that I need

  1055. 44:30

an answer thank you and she said

  1056. 44:33

afterward she was really thrown because

  1057. 44:35

being shush was her Achilles heel as a

  1058. 44:37

kid oh so you can see it even the she

  1059. 44:40

did that and it was also so insane so

  1060. 44:44

insane a great great moment though I

  1061. 44:46

mean Jiminy is the videos that people

  1062. 44:50

    watch that my people watch

  1063. 44:53

to check like to just get a huge

  1064. 44:56

serotonin boost like it is Jiminy videos

  1065. 44:58

all the way we Tina and I all of us send

  1066. 45:01

each other those videos almost every

  1067. 45:03

week still I love that they just they're

  1068. 45:06

    so

  1069. 45:07

funny I think it is that ability to say

  1070. 45:10

the worst things yes and have no

  1071. 45:15

fingerprints on it like I said you know

  1072. 45:17

saying to Mel Brooks what's your big bee

  1073. 45:19

    for the

  1074. 45:20

Nazis and and he just kind of goes my

  1075. 45:24

big beef my big beef I said you're

  1076. 45:27

always knocking the nazzi oh it's time

  1077. 45:30

for Mal Brooks to knock the

  1078. 45:32

Nazis and he goes I don't know the

  1079. 45:38

rude and and the guest it was completely

  1080. 45:41

like like they didn't know question CL

  1081. 45:43

the only thing we ever did once with

  1082. 45:45

    stepen

  1083. 45:46

Spielberg uh I said to Stephen okay at

  1084. 45:49

one point I'm going to ask

  1085. 45:52

you to describe how how you view the

  1086. 45:55

role of a director m M and kind of look

  1087. 45:58

off mhh and so what we planned was the

  1088. 46:00

only time we ever planned anything like

  1089. 46:02

this is that he was talking the camera

  1090. 46:04

stay with me and I slowly got down in

  1091. 46:06

the chair and crawled to craft service

  1092. 46:10

and took all the candies put three

  1093. 46:12

Donuts put them in my pocket crawled

  1094. 46:15

back crawled up in the chair I said and

  1095. 46:18

interrupted oh isn't that wonderful now

  1096. 46:20

    [Laughter]

  1097. 46:24

so God Jiminy forever jimy forever um

  1098. 46:28

you have a stamp in Canada I Do I Do Is

  1099. 46:32

it a picture of you or one of your

  1100. 46:34

characters it is picture of many

  1101. 46:36

characters so it's a many character

  1102. 46:38

stamp yes it's a stamp I have a coin wow

  1103. 46:42

yes is was that cool did you get did

  1104. 46:45

they have a a ceremony and everything no

  1105. 46:48

they didn't have a ceremony but they had

  1106. 46:50

uh or they did and I didn't show

  1107. 46:53

probably more like it you know what I

  1108. 46:54

mean it's probably I it was they did

  1109. 46:57

they had a guy except for you yeah they

  1110. 46:59

were doing a whole you know Bewitched

  1111. 47:01

tournament on TCM and I wasn't going to

  1112. 47:03

    miss

  1113. 47:04

that um no um a coin I have uh yes a

  1114. 47:09

stamp and so does Katherine O'Hara I

  1115. 47:12

heard the great so does Jim Carrey Mike

  1116. 47:16

Myers a few of us all heroes of mine I

  1117. 47:19

was 12 and 82 were you on SNL what year

  1118. 47:22

    were you

  1119. 47:23

onv in 82 I joined it in in the spring

  1120. 47:26

of 82 so what how many years were you on

  1121. 47:30

SNL one wild what was your first year um

  1122. 47:35

when I started 2001 I started two weeks

  1123. 47:38

after 911 wow that was the time when it

  1124. 47:41

was like you know will we ever laugh

  1125. 47:43

again comedy is dead right and I

  1126. 47:45

remember thinking but but maybe not

  1127. 47:48

maybe it's you know maybe we should

  1128. 47:50

still laugh um yeah the our my first

  1129. 47:53

show was the Giuliani show with the

  1130. 47:56

first resp responders on stage right who

  1131. 47:58

was the host reys Witherspoon musical

  1132. 48:01

    guest Alicia

  1133. 48:02

Keys and that was September 29th or

  1134. 48:06

something 2001 God and you know you it

  1135. 48:10

was like you know the beginning of any

  1136. 48:11

job it's like where are the bathrooms

  1137. 48:13

how does this work how do you get

  1138. 48:14

anything on and we're not going to do

  1139. 48:17

    anything political for three years

  1140. 48:19

comedy is over New York is you know

  1141. 48:23

hurting we're going to you know there's

  1142. 48:25

Anthrax in the building but isn't it

  1143. 48:27

    interesting that that

  1144. 48:28

happened then Co happens over and over

  1145. 48:32

again th this idea that how can we get

  1146. 48:35

    through this personal people have

  1147. 48:38

personal tragedies in their life it's

  1148. 48:40

like over and over again we think how

  1149. 48:41

can I get by and for me and maybe for

  1150. 48:44

you like comedy just continues to be the

  1151. 48:47

thing that I think pushes people oh

  1152. 48:49

absolutely through yeah because it is so

  1153. 48:52

absurd our life that that that these

  1154. 48:55

perfect lives will end one day

  1155. 48:57

and um and that tragedy exists there is

  1156. 49:02

a reason that the two masks are comedy

  1157. 49:04

    and tragedy because they're both

  1158. 49:06

    Preposterous and I think comedy

  1159. 49:09

has saved my life endlessly endlessly

  1160. 49:14

you know yeah and and and being so lucky

  1161. 49:18

to to be in the family I had this Irish

  1162. 49:22

Catholic youngest of of five siblings

  1163. 49:25

that are all still so close and all

  1164. 49:27

funny and all of us do Wordle every day

  1165. 49:30

and everyone is mean to each other and

  1166. 49:33

insult each other and it's perfect it's

  1167. 49:35

    the best yeah it's

  1168. 49:38

the my father someone laughing I my

  1169. 49:41

father my father would never uh never

  1170. 49:44

had dinner with us you know because he

  1171. 49:45

have his big he was Irish so he had and

  1172. 49:48

he was a successful guy but he'd have

  1173. 49:50

his big Irish broke yes cross mlen count

  1174. 49:53

M Marty get down here and uh so he he

  1175. 49:57

would come home we'd be in the nook

  1176. 49:59

having dinner and he'd have the

  1177. 50:01

newspaper with his gin and ginger no ice

  1178. 50:04

cuz the Irish feel ice is addictive so

  1179. 50:06

he'd sit there and uh he'd uh Marty

  1180. 50:11

don't shovel the food in like an animal

  1181. 50:13

D thank you and then one or one time he

  1182. 50:15

got up and he said Michael keep eating

  1183. 50:17

I'll make sure the dogs don't get at you

  1184. 50:19

know it was just and of course if you

  1185. 50:21

weren't the brunt of it you found it

  1186. 50:23

hilarious yes but that's that's love

  1187. 50:27

that that is the fact that somebody

  1188. 50:29

feels like you can take the teas yeah is

  1189. 50:33

that high compliment people ask Steve

  1190. 50:36

and myself this a lot I'll ask you have

  1191. 50:39

you like Steve and I insult each other a

  1192. 50:41

lot you know I mean in life it started

  1193. 50:44

with me insulting him in life because

  1194. 50:46

that's how I grew up and then we turned

  1195. 50:49

it you know we insult each other on

  1196. 50:51

stage but people always wonder if there

  1197. 50:53

if I've ever gone too far or hurt his

  1198. 50:56

    feet

  1199. 50:57

I didn't mean to it never has happened

  1200. 51:00

and Steve will answer that question by

  1201. 51:01

saying I think it's because we just know

  1202. 51:03

we'd never intend to yes that's right

  1203. 51:06

yeah and we have Tina and I have a

  1204. 51:08

different Dynamic we don't we don't

  1205. 51:11

really insult each other well you'll

  1206. 51:12

fight over the heat right like if it's

  1207. 51:15

too cold in the room you'll say o that's

  1208. 51:19

my blanket I mean do you ever do that

  1209. 51:21

stuff no you don't mm but I think you

  1210. 51:25

see it's so funny you say that because I

  1211. 51:27

think of you ladies as that's where you

  1212. 51:29

should stop well no I just think of you

  1213. 51:31

should just stop don't don't think of us

  1214. 51:33

so you never say okay Missy that you

  1215. 51:36

don't say that okay that's my blanket no

  1216. 51:39

we're really we usually are the same

  1217. 51:40

temperatures so so sorry why should I so

  1218. 51:44

    I shouldn't just verbalize what

  1219. 51:45

    everyone's thinking I don't think

  1220. 51:47

    everyone's thinking it I think it's very

  1221. 51:49

personal okay whatever you think that's

  1222. 51:51

fine I don't know if any if you noticed

  1223. 51:53

this at all but um there's a lot of this

  1224. 51:56

is my personal fake food some of my

  1225. 51:59

personal fake food collection so we've

  1226. 52:01

been trying to figure out how to make

  1227. 52:02

the studio Feel Home you know what

  1228. 52:05

interesting would have fake food and it

  1229. 52:07

would be boring to look at thank you but

  1230. 52:10

the way you've arranged it like the

  1231. 52:12

cheit well let's talk about it for a

  1232. 52:14

second while we just have a second yeah

  1233. 52:16

okay so this is a for people who might

  1234. 52:19

be watching this rather than listening

  1235. 52:21

to it there's a tiny little um paper box

  1236. 52:25

of Cheez itss yeah and you think oh it's

  1237. 52:27

just a teeny tiny miniature box of

  1238. 52:29

cheese that's there can't be anything in

  1239. 52:31

there no it can't be anything it'd be

  1240. 52:32

silly if there was maybe there's a tiny

  1241. 52:34

    cheese

  1242. 52:37

it do you know what's sad about this

  1243. 52:39

moment you you actually know a lot about

  1244. 52:42

this stuff this is my stuff no I know

  1245. 52:44

that's what's sad but you know what oh

  1246. 52:47

my God sometimes when I'm like I'm

  1247. 52:51

dieting but I'm still hungry for

  1248. 52:53

    something

  1249. 52:56

does have an icy you know what when I

  1250. 53:00

have a tiny Nutri box of neutr grain

  1251. 53:02

bars well surely nothing's in there oh

  1252. 53:04

it's a tight just a silly little box it

  1253. 53:06

    couldn't be an

  1254. 53:08

actual neutr grain bar in with a

  1255. 53:12

    anthropomorphic face that's winking at

  1256. 53:15

you let's see if you can see that right

  1257. 53:17

see a lot of people would find that

  1258. 53:18

disturbing yeah not me not me but

  1259. 53:21

    meanwhile

  1260. 53:26

well thanks oh hold on hold

  1261. 53:30

on party and not to be not to make a big

  1262. 53:34

deal but this isn't real this is a

  1263. 53:37

    candle

  1264. 53:41

and it's fake bread and it looks like a

  1265. 53:44

candle see if you were on a blind date

  1266. 53:47

with a guy and he brought you back to

  1267. 53:49

his apartment and said you want to see

  1268. 53:51

all these things I've done that I've

  1269. 53:52

    brought all my men

  1270. 53:54

through some it isn't you'd say okay and

  1271. 53:58

I put it yeah and I go let's go guess

  1272. 54:00

which is fake I go put it in your mouth

  1273. 54:03

put it in your mouth and tell me what's

  1274. 54:04

fake that's how I get them well that

  1275. 54:07

was I'm not see clip clip yeah clip I

  1276. 54:11

can sensor but look a simple felt fake

  1277. 54:15

garlic this isn't garlic this is

  1278. 54:18

felt oh you're kidding felt tomato come

  1279. 54:21

    on why

  1280. 54:24

you oh that is so clever and you know

  1281. 54:28

what again some people would have this

  1282. 54:30

and not make it interesting but you

  1283. 54:33

    describing

  1284. 54:35

    it is really really

  1285. 54:43

interesting oh thank you oh look you can

  1286. 54:46

    do props you want

  1287. 54:48

    to take your word for

  1288. 54:51

it I'm a pirate you know listeners uh

  1289. 54:54

Marty is putting a fake tomato in one of

  1290. 54:57

his eyes and pretending he's a pirate

  1291. 55:00

it's this kind of prop stuff that's

  1292. 55:02

great for podcasting I know and you know

  1293. 55:04

what it's so interesting I realize now

  1294. 55:06

as I do it it's one of the things that

  1295. 55:09

have kept me out of the big money is

  1296. 55:11

prop humor prop humor but you're making

  1297. 55:14

it work what's that an egg this is a

  1298. 55:16

    fake egg ASMR listen to

  1299. 55:19

this it doesn't sound fake to

  1300. 55:23

me people make so much money doing click

  1301. 55:26

ity click things with microphones not

  1302. 55:28

but not with a fake egg but what a gift

  1303. 55:31

you have if this is an indication of

  1304. 55:33

what your podcast is going to be yeah

  1305. 55:35

    it's really really I think I wouldn't

  1306. 55:38

make a big cake to celebrate the second

  1307. 55:40

week but certainly um I bet you finish

  1308. 55:43

this week yeah we will definitely finish

  1309. 55:44

this week we will definitely yeah and

  1310. 55:46

they've been very nice and they they

  1311. 55:48

they I in fact they I wouldn't bother to

  1312. 55:50

decorate the whole place I mean you've

  1313. 55:53

got you've got this stuff going I think

  1314. 55:55

    it's oh

  1315. 55:57

pancakes baked pancakes they just said

  1316. 56:00

someone just said to me great job and

  1317. 56:02

let's finish the week that's what

  1318. 56:03

someone said to me and I take that as a

  1319. 56:05

good sign yeah well I think it's very

  1320. 56:06

good so my last question to you is and

  1321. 56:08

I'm asking a lot of people this what is

  1322. 56:10

the thing you like where do you get your

  1323. 56:12

serotonin what do you look at watch

  1324. 56:16

listen to where do you go who do you

  1325. 56:18

hang with I mean we you're very funny

  1326. 56:20

friends but you know what is the what is

  1327. 56:24

something that you like genuinely laugh

  1328. 56:27

at that you watch or consume I can

  1329. 56:31

always turn on Annie Hall and just get

  1330. 56:34

lost in it um but I have

  1331. 56:39

great friends for a long time decades

  1332. 56:42

and decades friends who are all famous

  1333. 56:45

people in comedy and everyone is funny

  1334. 56:49

one time I was having lunch with Chris

  1335. 56:51

guest this is years ago I was making

  1336. 56:53

this movie Captain Ronnie said Martin

  1337. 56:55

what is this film about and right away I

  1338. 56:57

knew he'd hate the film you know I said

  1339. 57:00

well Chris um I play a

  1340. 57:03

man who has two children who inherits a

  1341. 57:06

boat he said I didn't say spoiler for

  1342. 57:10

me I thought do you have anything you

  1343. 57:13

like like now that like you're watching

  1344. 57:16

or anything that's making you laugh no

  1345. 57:19

you know I truthfully I am uh a News

  1346. 57:21

Junkie well this is yeah okay I watch

  1347. 57:24

you know Morning Joe I every morning

  1348. 57:27

I'll turn on CNN so there are many many

  1349. 57:30

I love Bill Maher but there are many

  1350. 57:32

many things that people say you haven't

  1351. 57:35

seen that I mean when I go to the emys I

  1352. 57:37

    don't know who's a massive star or who's

  1353. 57:40

a seat filler because there's so much I

  1354. 57:43

haven't seen there's just still that

  1355. 57:44

last Sint elsewhere I haven't have

  1356. 57:47

    you

  1357. 57:50

El God I loved Saint elsewhere love s oh

  1358. 57:53

but there that s elsewhere was so I'm

  1359. 57:55

    telling you

  1360. 57:56

this the last time you watched TV is say

  1361. 57:58

jck said to Bill hater I'm still mad

  1362. 58:00

    they cancelled Aras you

  1363. 58:04

    [Music]

  1364. 58:05

know all right well I love you very much

  1365. 58:08

thank you so much for doing and so I get

  1366. 58:10

paid yeah not in cash right no no in

  1367. 58:13

    Bitcoin in

  1368. 58:14

Dogecoin in Doge Doge in Doge a

  1369. 58:19

catcoin well that was an awesome

  1370. 58:21

interview with Martin schw he is the

  1371. 58:23

best and and now it's time for something

  1372. 58:24

we're calling the Polar Plunge which is

  1373. 58:26

    basically how do you

  1374. 58:29

get how do you change your day how do

  1375. 58:31

you make yourself feel better I do like

  1376. 58:33

to jump in a cold water I know it's

  1377. 58:35

weird but I have a podcast so I have to

  1378. 58:36

do it um but I think one way to uh like

  1379. 58:42

change the molecules in your brain and

  1380. 58:44

give you a serotonin boost is to laugh

  1381. 58:46

and there is no better laugh for me than

  1382. 58:48

Jiminy Glick so do yourself a favor and

  1383. 58:51

watch that character played by Martin

  1384. 58:53

Short in a variety of videos online

  1385. 58:56

    Jiminy Glick interviewing Bill hater

  1386. 58:58

when he stepped in for Jimmy Kimmel is

  1387. 59:00

so funny hater cannot stop laughing and

  1388. 59:02

he just loves getting teased and that

  1389. 59:04

kind of teasing between people who are

  1390. 59:07

mutually respectful of each other is

  1391. 59:09

like my favorite kind of love language

  1392. 59:12

um so yeah Martin schw thank you for

  1393. 59:15

Jiminy Glick the gift that keeps on

  1394. 59:17

giving and um if you have never watched

  1395. 59:20

    that character please binge it

  1396. 59:22
