    Hello everyone. Welcome to another

  2. 0:01

episode of Good Hang. I'm really really

  3. 0:03

excited about this episode with the

  4. 0:04

great Maya Hawk. We had such a good

  5. 0:06

conversation. We use so many words and I

  6. 0:08

just love talking to her and we talk

  7. 0:10

    about really interesting things today.

  8. 0:12

We talk about growing up in New York

  9. 0:13

City and being a kid there. We talk

  10. 0:15

about her love of magic and wonder and

  11. 0:19

uh a life of imagination. And we talk

  12. 0:21

about joy and anxiety, the characters

  13. 0:23

that we played together uh in Inside Out

  14. 0:26

to. also how those emotions interact and

  15. 0:29

connect in real life. So, it was a great

  16. 0:31

convo. And as always, we like to um ask

  17. 0:35

uh someone who knows our guest, a

  18. 0:37

friend, a fan, someone who has a

  19. 0:38

question that uh they think I should ask

  20. 0:41

the guest before we start the podcast.

  21. 0:42

So, we um are joining with Willa

  22. 0:46

Fitzgerald. Willa is an actress. She's

  23. 0:48

on um Pulse right now, a medical show on

  24. 0:51

Netflix. She was in Little Women with

  25. 0:54

Maya Hawk and most excitedly she's

  26. 0:57

joining us from Hungary which I believe

  27. 1:00

is uh also where Budapesh is. So Willa

  28. 1:06

    can you hear me?

  29. 1:09

about making the extra effort to find

  34. 1:19

the perfect gift. Walmart has the top

  35. 1:22

  37. 1:27

That's why it has to be Walmart for all

  38. 1:28

my gifts this year. Guest best giftgiver

  39. 1:31

award goes to yours truly. Get the

  40. 1:34

walmart.com or download the app to get

  43. 1:39

    all your gifts this season.

  44. 1:42

    What do you say?

  45. 1:45

    All I ever wanted.

  46. 1:50

    >> I'm, so, grateful., Thank, you, for, for

  47. 1:51

calling in from there and thank you for

  48. 1:53

talking about the great Maya Hawk today.

  49. 1:56

    >> My, delight., My, delight.

  50. 1:57

    >> I, know., Now, tell, me, um, how, you, two, met.

  51. 2:00

    >> We, met, actually, in, Ireland, doing, Little

  52. 2:02

    Women

  53. 2:03

    >> um, in, 20, 2017.

  54. 2:07

And um I mean we just fell in love. I

  55. 2:10

think that would be it's it was a love

  56. 2:12

story. It was a love story for sure.

  57. 2:13

    >> You, um, you, both, were, she, was, playing

  58. 2:16

Joe, you were playing Meg. What was it

  59. 2:18

like to play Meg? How what did you bring

  60. 2:20

    to this Meg?

  61. 2:21

    >> I, feel, like, my, my, personal, mission, was

  62. 2:23

to bring a humanity to her cuz I feel

  63. 2:25

like she's often sort of like the she's

  64. 2:28

like the the two perfect sister a little

  65. 2:30

bit which is I think why people don't

  66. 2:31

love her and relate to her. and she also

  67. 2:33

feels a little bit um you know out of

  68. 2:36

our time in the sense that she makes

  69. 2:37

    very classically gendered choices with

  70. 2:39

her life. And so I feel like I feel like

  71. 2:42

my personal mission was just to like

  72. 2:43

kind of elucidate why we should like Meg

  73. 2:45

and why we should understand her as like

  74. 2:48

a really kind of relatable lovely

  75. 2:50

character. And I think we did it I think

  76. 2:51

we actually I think we did manage to to

  77. 2:53

    pull that off.

  78. 2:54

    >> And, here, you, are, two, young, actresses, at

  79. 2:56

the time joining this production. I

  80. 2:59

think it for Maya it was her first big

  81. 3:02

production. And what did how did you

  82. 3:04

what did you uh see in each other? How

  83. 3:06

did you become friends? We really just

  84. 3:08

like bonded because I had already been

  85. 3:10

working, but I I was suddenly kind of

  86. 3:11

entering a new phase of my career where

  87. 3:14

I was getting to do this project that I

  88. 3:16

was like just so excited about. And it

  89. 3:18

was her first job and she was so excited

  90. 3:20

about it. and and we just, you know, we

  91. 3:23

would like go to the we were all staying

  92. 3:24

in this hotel together outside of Dublin

  93. 3:27

and we would like go to the pool

  94. 3:29

together or the steam room and just like

  95. 3:31

talk about what really excited us about

  96. 3:33

being actors and and we just like really

  97. 3:36

kind of connected on on like an artistic

  98. 3:38

level and also I think on just a

  99. 3:41

personal level because I think we're

  100. 3:42

kind of very opposite people in a lot of

  101. 3:44

ways. I think that we both like learn a

  102. 3:46

lot from the other person and the way

  103. 3:48

that they navigate the world because

  104. 3:50

it's so different from maybe the way

  105. 3:52

that we ourselves navigate the world.

  106. 3:54

    >> How, are, you, different?, Um,, I, think, that

  107. 3:57

I think that I'm I think, you know, the

  108. 3:59

most like reductive two-c answer would

  109. 4:01

just be I think I'm a very cautious

  110. 4:03

person. And I think Maya is like full of

  111. 4:06

just like a lust for life and a and a

  112. 4:09

real sort of like verve that she just is

  113. 4:12

is unafraid in situations that I

  114. 4:14

sometimes feel a little bit more unsure

  115. 4:17

    in. I think

  116. 4:17

    >> Maya, does, a, lot, of, things,, you, know,, she

  117. 4:20

does she's on a Broadway show. She

  118. 4:22

performs, records music with a lot of

  119. 4:24

    different bands, including solo stuff.

  120. 4:26

    She's,

  121. 4:27

    >> you, know,, she's, writing,, she's, acting.

  122. 4:29

Like, she, to your point, she, it feels

  123. 4:31

like she um ventures and is adventurous

  124. 4:36

in the stuff that she does.

  125. 4:38

    >> What, I, admire, about, her, so, deeply, is

  126. 4:41

that she just kind of has this sort of

  127. 4:43

like infinite curiosity and like well of

  128. 4:46

creativity that she seems to be able to

  129. 4:47

draw on. She has like a real She's

  130. 4:50

really interested in just the world

  131. 4:52

around her in a way that's like so kind

  132. 4:54

    of pure and like limitless.

  133. 4:56

    >> Um,, so, we're, going, to, get, to, the

  134. 4:58

question you have for for me to ask

  135. 5:00

Maya, but just before we do, I I want to

  136. 5:02

    say congratulations on Pulse.

  137. 5:04

    >> Oh,, thank, you.

  138. 5:05

    >> I, love, a, medical, show.

  139. 5:07

    >> Well,, you, know,, Maya, was, a, big, reason, of

  140. 5:08

    why I took that job.

  141. 5:10

    >> How, come?

  142. 5:11

    >> Because, she, loves, Grey's, Anatomy, and, she

  143. 5:13

was the one who made me love Grey's

  144. 5:15

Anatomy. And when I was calling her and

  145. 5:17

I was like, I've got this like possible

  146. 5:18

job. What do you think? I want to talk

  147. 5:20

about it. And she was like, do it. Like

  148. 5:23

I will be the biggest fan of this show.

  149. 5:25

    Please.

  150. 5:26

    >> Has, it, been, fun, to, play, that, kind, of

  151. 5:29

part and like get into the jargon and

  152. 5:31

get into the vibe of what it would be

  153. 5:32

like being in an emergency room? What's

  154. 5:34

What's been fun about I feel like it's

  155. 5:35

like it's one of the most I feel like in

  156. 5:38

those sort of situations where you're

  157. 5:39

like really just playing at a job, it's

  158. 5:42

a kind of like the purest expression of

  159. 5:44

like the childhood fantasy of being an

  160. 5:46

actor where you're like I am now a

  161. 5:48

doctor and I can now save people's lives

  162. 5:50

    like wow

  163. 5:51

    >> wow, and, I, think, you, know, like, that's

  164. 5:53

like a really cool thing but no I loved

  165. 5:55

it. I love I do love learning new things

  166. 5:57

and I learned so much and I'm also just

  167. 5:59

like a little nerd and like loved just

  168. 6:02

going through like the the big ass

  169. 6:04

medical pamphlets that we would be get

  170. 6:06

given for every episode and being like

  171. 6:08

you know oh yeah like watching like

  172. 6:10

cadaver videos of like the surgeries and

  173. 6:12

    being like wow medical school.

  174. 6:14

    >> Do, you, when, you, I, I, always, try, to, ask

  175. 6:16

people who are on medical shows when you

  176. 6:18

cut do you cut into fake bodies?

  177. 6:21

    >> Real, bodies., Just, kidding.

  178. 6:24

Like, do you ever have to put a scalpel

  179. 6:26

in? You know, I know that there's fake

  180. 6:27

torsos and stuff. Do you do that?

  181. 6:30

    >> Yeah., No,, we, we, had, our, like, prosthetics

  182. 6:33

person was from Walking Dead, so our

  183. 6:35

    prosthetics were like next level.

  184. 6:37

    >> They, were, like,, "We're, going, to, use, some

  185. 6:39

old zombies. We're going to get

  186. 6:40

    >> Yeah., Yeah., They're, like,, "We, got, this."

  187. 6:42

    >> Okay., So,, thank, you, um, for, getting, on.

  188. 6:46

And um what question do you think I

  189. 6:47

should ask Maya today? Do you have any

  190. 6:49

thoughts? I'm curious whether her sort

  191. 6:52

of like lust for life, her ability to be

  192. 6:55

so interested in the world around her

  193. 6:57

was something that she feels um is

  194. 7:00

innate to her as a person or whether

  195. 7:03

it's something that she feels like was

  196. 7:04

cultivated either by herself, by her

  197. 7:06

community, by her parents. And um and if

  198. 7:09

so, like whether there's a specific

  199. 7:11

moment in which she like recalls seeing

  200. 7:13

the world in that way from a young age.

  201. 7:16

You know what's great about that

  202. 7:18

question is I think people really reduce

  203. 7:20

um the children of actors and artists in

  204. 7:24

the way that they talk about you know

  205. 7:26

what is it like being a you know

  206. 7:28

considered a nepo baby you know you're

  207. 7:30

in the same profession as your parents

  208. 7:32

when in fact like what is it like

  209. 7:34

growing up with artists that are parents

  210. 7:35

and how do they introduce you to art

  211. 7:38

    >> and, also, what, is, it, like, being, a, New

  212. 7:39

York City kid? I mean, a lot of people

  213. 7:42

uh don't know the feeling of growing up

  214. 7:44

in the city and what that's like, what

  215. 7:46

your what you get to see or um or what

  216. 7:49

you don't get to see, you know, like how

  217. 7:51

does it limit you and how does it open

  218. 7:52

    you up? And I think that's a that's a

  219. 7:54

great question. Really well done. You

  220. 7:56

seem like a woman in her 30s who has her

  221. 7:58

    [ __ ] together. Congratulations.

  222. 7:59

    >> Thank, you., I, mean,, you, know,, it's, all, an

  223. 8:01

    illusion.

  224. 8:03

    >> Really,, really, nice, to, meet, you., Such, a

  225. 8:04

pleasure. Thank you so much for the time

  226. 8:06

and for helping me get to know Maya a

  227. 8:08

little more. I really appreciate it.

  228. 8:09

    Guys, so fun.

  229. 8:10

    >> Thank, you, again.

  230. 8:12

  252. 9:01

Before it was good hang, it was just an

  253. 9:04

idea. I started with a mic and my Mac

  254. 9:07

and a desire to have a good time with

  255. 9:09

fun people and friends. And this show

  256. 9:12

grew from a place where I thought, I'm

  257. 9:14

going to have friends sitting next to

  258. 9:15

me. We're going to hang out. We're going

  259. 9:17

to laugh. We're going to go deep. We're

  260. 9:19

going to stay shallow. Whatever it

  261. 9:21

takes. But no matter what you have an

  262. 9:22

idea for, whether it's writing your own

  263. 9:25

    sitcom, creating a feel-good platform

  264. 9:27

forming a comedy crew, or even making

  265. 9:30

the world laugh, go for it. You just

  266. 9:32

need to get started. Your great ideas

  269. 9:40

    >> Maya, Hawk, is, with, me., Maya,, I'm, so, happy

  270. 9:43

    to see you.

  271. 9:44

    >> I'm, so, happy, to, see, you., You, know,, we

  272. 9:45

haven't seen each other in person

  273. 9:47

    >> since, Inside, Out, 2, premiere

  274. 9:51

    shenanigans.

  275. 9:52

    >> Dude,, that, movie

  276. 9:53

    >> I, know.

  277. 9:56

    >> That, movie, made, people, so, happy.

  278. 9:58

    >> I, know.

  279. 9:59

    >> I, feel, so, seen.

  280. 10:00

    >> What, have, you, had, people, come, up, and, say

  281. 10:02

    to you about that movie?

  282. 10:03

    >> I, It's, been, one, of, the, great, honors.

  283. 10:06

Like my little sister was asking me the

  284. 10:08

other day. She was like, "Do you get

  285. 10:10

annoyed if someone asks you to do the

  286. 10:12

anxiety voice or do you get annoyed?"

  287. 10:13

And I was like, "Not at all." Like cuz

  288. 10:16

sometimes if like if someone wants me to

  289. 10:17

go put on like an ice cream scooper

  290. 10:19

uniform, I'm like I'm done with the ice

  291. 10:21

cream scooper un and like and but if

  292. 10:23

there was a while where that wasn't

  293. 10:24

true. But with this movie the that

  294. 10:27

character I've had so many people feel

  295. 10:29

so seen by it and like little kids feel

  296. 10:32

so seen by it and like it helped them

  297. 10:34

understand their brain better. And like

  298. 10:36

    I'll get a call from a friend's parent

  299. 10:38

like from like a parent, a a friend of

  300. 10:40

mine who is a parent, not a friend's

  301. 10:41

parent. Um, and be like, "Hey, would you

  302. 10:43

do a recording, like my kid's going

  303. 10:45

through this hard time, would you record

  304. 10:47

something in the voice for my kid?" And

  305. 10:50

I'll be like, "Sure." And I'll turn on

  306. 10:52

the little speaker and be like, "Hi."

  307. 10:53

Oh, I know it's really scary when

  308. 10:54

parents have to go to the doctor's

  309. 10:55

office and I know that it makes you

  310. 10:56

nervous and I and I but the thing is you

  311. 10:58

just take deep breaths and trust that

  312. 11:00

your daddy will be safe and that the

  313. 11:01

doctors are going to take great care of

  314. 11:02

him. And like I um and so I like will do

  315. 11:06

things like that and I don't mind at

  316. 11:07

all. I love it because it's so I know I

  317. 11:11

feel the same. I feel like you and I had

  318. 11:13

a a couple moments when we were doing

  319. 11:15

press where we kept looking at each

  320. 11:16

other like whoa this feels so much

  321. 11:18

    bigger

  322. 11:20

than us. And the response of the movie

  323. 11:23

was so beautiful. And uh uh I know that

  324. 11:28

that is very rare to be in something

  325. 11:30

good that people like that people go to

  326. 11:34

see that is a good experience. Those

  327. 11:38

    don't always

  328. 11:38

    >> that, is, good, for, the, world

  329. 11:39

    >> and, that, is, good., That's, like, it's, so, so

  330. 11:42

rare to have it hit all those

  331. 11:44

    benchmarks. It's like a rainbow.

  332. 11:46

    >> I, know., And, plus, a, billion, dollars, babe.

  333. 11:48

    >> I, saying, for, something, that, makes, a

  334. 11:51

billion dollars and is good for the

  335. 11:53

    world. I don't think there's anything

  336. 11:54

    that does that. It's crazy.

  337. 11:56

    >> No,, I, mean, it, is, so, true., Like, the, word

  338. 11:59

billion and good for the world doesn't

  339. 12:01

    go together.

  340. 12:01

    >> Not, go, together.

  341. 12:02

    >> No., Of, anything.

  342. 12:04

    >> What, have, you, learned, about, anxiety, in

  343. 12:06

the past year? Your own or others

  344. 12:08

    because you played that character

  345. 12:10

    >> so, much., And, I, think, with, like, the, joy

  346. 12:13

    anxiety relationship

  347. 12:15

I it taught me a lot about showing love

  348. 12:20

to that part of myself. Mhm.

  349. 12:23

    >> And, like, allowing, other, people, to, see, it

  350. 12:25

so they can show it love and that that

  351. 12:29

is all actually a way to calm it down

  352. 12:33

    >> is, like, inviting, it, into, the

  353. 12:35

conversation like looking at what it

  354. 12:38

thinks and is worried about and kind of

  355. 12:40

addressing each point and then ask and

  356. 12:42

then like offering it a comfortable

  357. 12:44

chair and saying like okay you're

  358. 12:46

invited you know you're not I'm not

  359. 12:48

trying to shut you out behind a door cuz

  360. 12:50

that of course just works it up even

  361. 12:52

    more.

  362. 12:53

    >> Yes.

  363. 12:53

    >> Um,, and, so, I, think, in, giving, the, biggest

  364. 12:56

thing I learned from doing this and

  365. 12:58

being allowed to be welcomed into the

  366. 13:01

beautiful world of this movie is to give

  367. 13:03

    my anxiety a comfy chair.

  368. 13:05

    >> Yes,, that's, so, well, said.

  369. 13:10

And for people listening right now, like

  370. 13:13

everybody is so stressed. Of course they

  371. 13:17

    are.

  372. 13:18

    >> Of, course, they, are., And, I, mean,, anxiety

  373. 13:20

might be the defining emotion of our

  374. 13:22

    time.

  375. 13:22

    >> It's, been, it, was, so, fun, to, work, on, on, on

  376. 13:27

    those characters together because

  377. 13:30

when the time is very scary like these

  378. 13:32

times, you know, you want to find a way

  379. 13:34

to tune in, check out, help yourself

  380. 13:38

help other people. Like you want to dip

  381. 13:39

    in and out.

  382. 13:40

    >> Mhm.

  383. 13:41

    >> But, when, you're, just, getting, someone

  384. 13:43

going like toxic positivity, like this

  385. 13:45

is great. It's like babe, things are

  386. 13:48

    bad. things are bad.

  387. 13:50

    >> Things, are, real, bad., So,, anybody

  388. 13:51

listening, I want you to know that we

  389. 13:53

    know

  390. 13:53

    >> things, are, bad.

  391. 13:54

    >> Bad., And, but, also,, if, you, shut, Joy, out

  392. 13:57

completely, like then you still need to

  393. 14:01

welcome in some like you're not helping

  394. 14:03

anybody if you if you shut out joy

  395. 14:05

    completely. Well, there's a beautiful

  396. 14:07

moment in the movie and it's such a it's

  397. 14:09

such a um testament to the work you did

  398. 14:12

as Anxiety and the work the animators do

  399. 14:14

and the work that um Kelsey man did, the

  400. 14:17

director and Pete Doctor, the producer

  401. 14:19

and all the artists and Pete the creator

  402. 14:21

and just all the writers, Meg, the the

  403. 14:24

    um when

  404. 14:27

    anxiety

  405. 14:29

uh does a small little gesture to let

  406. 14:32

when joy is being finally called back.

  407. 14:35

    Finally,

  408. 14:37

Riley, our character, has finally calmed

  409. 14:39

herself down on the ice. She's talked to

  410. 14:41

her friends. She's feeling a little bit

  411. 14:44

like herself. She gets back on the ice.

  412. 14:46

She starts skating and Joy is being

  413. 14:48

called back and anxiety does a little I

  414. 14:50

told you there's like a little genulect

  415. 14:52

like a little gesture of like this way.

  416. 14:55

Like for people listening, you can't see

  417. 14:56

what Maya and I are doing, but we're

  418. 14:57

    doing a little like

  419. 14:58

    >> like, who, like, your, your, table, is, over

  420. 15:01

    here man.

  421. 15:02

    >> Yeah.

  422. 15:03

    >> It, made, me, cry., so, hard, and, I, just

  423. 15:07

thought, oh, like the the tiny gesture

  424. 15:09

of that is like what we're just we must

  425. 15:12

try to do during this bananas foster

  426. 15:17

    time we're living in.

  427. 15:18

    >> Yeah.

  428. 15:19

    >> Because, that, is, I, mean, whatever, we, can

  429. 15:21

    do babe.

  430. 15:22

    >> Well,, and, to, make, room, for, each, other.

  431. 15:24

    >> Yeah., and, like, and, to, make, room, to, get

  432. 15:26

off of our phones, which we were talking

  433. 15:28

about before we started rolling, but to

  434. 15:30

get off of our phones where we're just

  435. 15:32

being bombarded by like here's a funny

  436. 15:34

video of a cat. Here's a video of the

  437. 15:36

    apocalypse. Here's a like here's a funny

  438. 15:38

joke that that is offensive. Here's a

  439. 15:40

funny joke that's your humor but would

  440. 15:41

    offend someone else. Here's another

  441. 15:43

video of the apocalypse. Like it's like

  442. 15:45

to get out of that and into like, oh

  443. 15:47

here you and I are sitting with each

  444. 15:49

other. We're looking each other in the

  445. 15:50

eyes. We can still do this. Yes, we can

  446. 15:53

still talk and and be and make space for

  447. 15:55

each other and like you know look at the

  448. 15:58

people around us and that we have to

  449. 16:00

make time to do that even as we make

  450. 16:02

time to try to figure out what is

  451. 16:04

    happening.

  452. 16:05

    >> I, I, agree, and, I, you, know, I, kind, of

  453. 16:07

experience you as a as an old soul. Have

  454. 16:09

    you been told that?

  455. 16:10

    >> I, have, been, there's, been, some, agist

  456. 16:12

    claims about my soul made.

  457. 16:14

    >> You, must, get, this, a, lot., People, talk

  458. 16:16

they roll their eyes about their tw's

  459. 16:18

20s and what's good about being in your

  460. 16:20

20s? Oh, what's good about being in your

  461. 16:22

    20s? I mean, I'm already starting to

  462. 16:26

have more random body pain and but I

  463. 16:30

know I have less than I will have. So

  464. 16:32

    like it's a more pain-free time.

  465. 16:35

    >> Recovery, is, faster.

  466. 16:36

    >> Recovery, is, faster., Um, um, uh, so, that's

  467. 16:41

good. I still like I I can still um I

  468. 16:46

yeah, just general recovery, bounce back

  469. 16:48

    from things more quickly. emotional

  470. 16:50

    recovery, um, indep like independence

  471. 16:53

you know, it's like this kind of miracle

  472. 16:54

    window before insane amounts of

  473. 16:56

    responsibility, but after independence

  474. 16:59

where no one's telling you what to do.

  475. 17:00

And that's like that's the miracle of

  476. 17:02

your 20s, right? Is that like your

  477. 17:04

    responsibilities are there, but they're

  478. 17:06

not like usually kids and family, you

  479. 17:09

know, or they can be, but you know, but

  480. 17:12

that yet, but they are, but you have

  481. 17:14

this freedom and that's a cool window of

  482. 17:17

time. And um, so bounc window is such a

  483. 17:19

good way to say it, Maya. That like

  484. 17:21

    you're very wise. It's true. It's like

  485. 17:23

if only one can know the time they're in

  486. 17:25

and appreciate the time they're in, it's

  487. 17:26

    hard to do.

  488. 17:27

    >> Yeah,, it, is.

  489. 17:27

    >> Yeah., Um,, okay., Speaking, of, the, time

  490. 17:30

you're in, I want to jump back to little

  491. 17:32

    Maya.

  492. 17:33

    >> Yes.

  493. 17:33

    >> Because, I'm, always, really, interested, in

  494. 17:36

what it what it's like being a New York

  495. 17:38

kid. I was kind of a sad kid or like set

  496. 17:41

point melancholic, you know, like moody

  497. 17:45

and emotional and homey and like

  498. 17:49

    >> I, But

  499. 17:51

    >> a, New, York, City, kid, is, awesome., You, so

  500. 17:54

much stuff to to look at and do. Like my

  501. 17:57

favorite place to go was the

  502. 17:58

Metropolitan Museum of Art, Temple of

  503. 17:59

Dendor, because of the mixed up files of

  504. 18:02

Mrs. Basley Frankweiler. Do you remember

  505. 18:03

that book? And the kids like was ran

  506. 18:06

away. for anyone who hasn't read it

  507. 18:08

they ran run away and they live inside

  508. 18:09

the Metropolitan Museum of Art and they

  509. 18:11

sleep in the Queen's bed and they steal

  510. 18:13

money from the fountain and it's awesome

  511. 18:15

and I love that book and I loved going

  512. 18:17

to the Met and I loved going to the

  513. 18:19

natural history museum and I loved going

  514. 18:21

to the zoo and there was just like so

  515. 18:23

much to do activi activity based on a

  516. 18:26

general as like a little kid and I loved

  517. 18:28

that and so many different ways to

  518. 18:30

express all your weird interests like I

  519. 18:32

had lots of weird interests as a kid. I

  520. 18:34

loved like dead insects, like the ones

  521. 18:36

that preserve dead insects and I loved

  522. 18:38

going to see them at the science museum.

  523. 18:39

I love rocks and there was like, you

  524. 18:41

know, just like so much exposure and

  525. 18:43

different kinds of people you could

  526. 18:44

decide to be and you so much interaction

  527. 18:48

with difference. And that was so cool

  528. 18:52

and I think so rare cuz so many people

  529. 18:54

grow up in these little communities

  530. 18:55

where it's like everyone feels the same.

  531. 18:57

But in this city, you're like

  532. 18:58

interacting with humanity all the time

  533. 19:00

and you get to decide who you are, which

  534. 19:02

is great. And then you get to high

  535. 19:04

school and it's like being in college

  536. 19:07

for other people. Like it is crazy. I

  537. 19:11

went to more clubs between 9th and 12th

  538. 19:13

grade than I have been since. Like like

  539. 19:16

    it was

  540. 19:16

    >> there's, a, lot, of, pressure, for, New, York

  541. 19:18

    kids to be very interesting.

  542. 19:22

    >> They, There's, a, lot, of, pressure, to, be

  543. 19:24

interesting, to be adults, to be on the

  544. 19:26

    town. Yes.

  545. 19:28

    >> Um, there's, a, lot, a, lot, of, that., Did, you

  546. 19:30

ever have like a 13-year-old like I'm at

  547. 19:33

    Studio 54 and I don't know how I got

  548. 19:35

    here. Like

  549. 19:36

    >> you, did.

  550. 19:37

    >> Yes.

  551. 19:39

    >> Where, you're, just, in, a, club, and, it's

  552. 19:41

like I'm little. I might be too young

  553. 19:43

    for this.

  554. 19:44

    >> I'm, too, little, for, this.

  555. 19:45

    >> Interesting., Seemed, like, a, good, idea, at

  556. 19:48

first. I'm proud of myself for getting

  557. 19:49

in here, but now how do I get out? But I

  558. 19:52

I I love it. I would do it. I would

  559. 19:54

raise kids in New York. I I I think it's

  560. 19:56

awesome. An awesome way to grow up.

  561. 19:58

    >> To, your, point,, there, was, an

  562. 19:58

independence. You took the subway, you

  563. 20:00

walked around, you kind of figured out

  564. 20:02

life. What were some memories of that

  565. 20:04

time when you felt like adult or grown

  566. 20:06

    up?

  567. 20:07

    >> Oo.

  568. 20:07

    >> You, know,, a, moment, where

  569. 20:09

    >> Yeah.

  570. 20:10

    >> you, had, you, had, like, an, adult, moment.

  571. 20:12

    >> Well,, I, realized, in, high, school, that, I

  572. 20:16

    could cut class.

  573. 20:18

    >> Yeah.

  574. 20:19

    >> Um, and, that, like, the, that, there, was, like

  575. 20:22

no real ramifications to doing it. And

  576. 20:25

so I started like just doing my own

  577. 20:28

thing like like during the day and I I

  578. 20:32

high school I experimented with smoking

  579. 20:34

cigarettes um which you shouldn't do and

  580. 20:36

is bad very bad. Very very bad. Do not

  581. 20:40

    do it.

  582. 20:40

    >> You, look, very, cool., Don't, do, it.

  583. 20:42

    >> Yeah., Don't, do, it., Don't, do, it., But, you

  584. 20:44

look cool. And I but I couldn't buy

  585. 20:46

cigarettes cuz I was a kid. And so I

  586. 20:49

would occasionally like walk around to

  587. 20:52

try to bum cigarettes off people. This

  588. 20:53

    is what I'm talking about.

  589. 20:54

    >> That's, what, I, picture, a, New, York, kid

  590. 20:55

    doing.

  591. 20:56

    >> Yeah., But, I, went, to, school, in, Brooklyn

  592. 20:57

Heights and the only people who smoke in

  593. 20:59

    Brooklyn Heights are like construction

  594. 21:01

workers and they smoke Newports and I

  595. 21:03

hated Newports. So I would take the

  596. 21:06

subway to this is a ridiculous story to

  597. 21:08

the East Village so I could bum Marbor

  598. 21:11

Golds off of cuz people in the East

  599. 21:14

Village smoke Marbor Golds like outside

  600. 21:16

McN bookstore. And so I would like take

  601. 21:19

the sub on my free period, my lunch

  602. 21:21

break or whatever, I'd like be like ah I

  603. 21:23

won't go to math today. I'll just like

  604. 21:25

take a double peer free period and I'll

  605. 21:26

go take the subway to Greenwich Village

  606. 21:28

or the East Village and bum a Marbor

  607. 21:30

Gold off some like intelligent like

  608. 21:33

handsome man smoking outside of a

  609. 21:35

    bookstore.

  610. 21:35

    >> Some, documentary, film, documentary

  611. 21:37

filmmaker like sipping a cappuccino. And

  612. 21:39

I was like I am a grown-up and this is

  613. 21:41

an adventure. Exactly the kind of story

  614. 21:43

I picture just getting on the subway for

  615. 21:46

    a cigarette

  616. 21:48

    >> because, you, have, a, preference,, a

  617. 21:50

    neighborhood based cigarette preference.

  618. 21:53

    >> Utterly, ridiculous.

  619. 21:54

    >> I, mean, during, that, time, there, was, a

  620. 21:56

probably a sense of you when you knew

  621. 21:58

deep down even in high school like I'm

  622. 22:01

not going to worry so much about math.

  623. 22:02

I'm going to be an actor. Yes. I know

  624. 22:03

what I'm going to do. When did you know

  625. 22:05

you were going to be an act? You know

  626. 22:06

when did you feel like I'm going to

  627. 22:08

really make this my job or my life? I

  628. 22:10

knew I was going to be like an artist of

  629. 22:14

some kind. I think I was I mean I think

  630. 22:17

I was really afraid of being an actor

  631. 22:21

because my parents are both actors and I

  632. 22:23

got to see that you know they were as

  633. 22:26

successful as one as I could ever have

  634. 22:28

dream dreamed to be in that profession

  635. 22:31

and still had so much job insecurity and

  636. 22:34

stress and highs and low moments and I

  637. 22:37

was like I don't know if this seems fun

  638. 22:40

and like and you know I had experiences

  639. 22:42

    of like

  640. 22:43

    >> going, to, school, and, like, trying, to, leave

  641. 22:45

my house with like an umbrella cuz there

  642. 22:47

was some article out and there was

  643. 22:48

paparazzi around the house and I was

  644. 22:50

    like this seems

  645. 22:53

    >> like, I, don't, know, about, this., Um, and, so

  646. 22:55

    it wasn't until

  647. 22:57

    >> like, 11th, grade, where, I, realized, that

  648. 23:01

there was nothing else that I was good

  649. 23:03

    at and liked.

  650. 23:04

    >> Um, and, I, was, like, um, you, know, like, I

  651. 23:08

just I like this. I am good at it. I

  652. 23:11

feel like this is my community. Like the

  653. 23:14

other people who like this, I like them.

  654. 23:16

And um and they put up with me and

  655. 23:19

because they'll put up with anyone. You

  656. 23:20

know, that's great about the theater

  657. 23:22

community. They will put up with anyone.

  658. 23:23

Um unless you're mean. Um and uh but

  659. 23:27

    >> I, So, I, just, like, found, my, home, and, I, was

  660. 23:30

like, "Okay, I'll figure out that other

  661. 23:32

stuff. This is what I want to do." Okay

  662. 23:34

this is a great that's a great um segue

  663. 23:36

into our So, we do this thing at the

  664. 23:38

beginning of each show where we talk to

  665. 23:39

    people who know our guests.

  666. 23:40

    >> Oh,, no.

  667. 23:41

    >> Yes., And, just, to, talk, well, behind, their

  668. 23:43

back and and it always kind of helps me

  669. 23:44

figure out um if there's questions I

  670. 23:46

    should ask

  671. 23:48

    >> my, guest, and, also, to, get, to, know, the

  672. 23:50

guest more and we talked to your friend

  673. 23:51

    Willa Fitzgerald.

  674. 23:53

    >> She's, the, best.

  675. 23:53

    >> She's, the, best., Now,, you, two, met, on, the

  676. 23:55

    set of Little Women

  677. 23:57

    >> in

  678. 23:58

    >> still, the, greatest, experience, of, my

  679. 23:59

    life.

  680. 23:59

    >> Wait,, tell, us, why., It, was, my, first

  681. 24:02

professional job. I I had to I I had to

  682. 24:07

drop out of school to do it and I was

  683. 24:08

really worried about it and it was like

  684. 24:10

whatever. I get to Ireland. We're in

  685. 24:12

this town called Dunl. They've I've just

  686. 24:14

never had an experience this positive.

  687. 24:16

We It was the four sisters and and the

  688. 24:19

guy who played Lori and we fell in love

  689. 24:24

with each other and we were staying at

  690. 24:26

this seaside hotel in this port town and

  691. 24:30

it was uh the Royal Marine was the name

  692. 24:32

of this hotel and it was like walking

  693. 24:34

distance from this farmers market and

  694. 24:36

these restaurants and we just loved each

  695. 24:38

other and you know it's gone for me now.

  696. 24:39

I'm already so old. I can't stay awake

  697. 24:42

forever. But do you remember when you

  698. 24:44

were like 18 and 19 and you just didn't

  699. 24:46

need to sleep at all? Like somehow I

  700. 24:49

could work a full 14-hour shooting day

  701. 24:51

and then be like, should we go out?

  702. 24:53

    >> Like, and, then, like,, you, know,, and, then

  703. 24:54

I'll learn my lines and then I'll go to

  704. 24:56

sleep for 2 hours and then go back to

  705. 24:58

her. I don't know how we did it, but it

  706. 25:00

might have just been the raw joy of how

  707. 25:02

in love with each other we were. Like we

  708. 25:04

were going to set on the days that we

  709. 25:05

weren't working and being like, I have a

  710. 25:06

note. You should try this in the next

  711. 25:07

scene. We just it was just like acting

  712. 25:09

    acting.

  713. 25:10

    >> It, was, just, like, acting., We, love, it, and

  714. 25:12

we love each other and we're all this is

  715. 25:15

Ireland and it's the ocean and like we

  716. 25:17

did a moon spell where there was a full

  717. 25:19

moon and we bought crystals from this

  718. 25:20

guy in town and we put the crystals in

  719. 25:22

the moon and then we went skinny dipping

  720. 25:24

in the port and it was freezing and it

  721. 25:26

    was like just

  722. 25:28

    happy. It was happy.

  723. 25:30

    >> Fun., That, sounds, so, fun., I, mean, she, was

  724. 25:33

I mean she adores you and she was

  725. 25:35

talking about exactly that like how you

  726. 25:37

all connected so fast and she was saying

  727. 25:40

that there is this you have this lust

  728. 25:42

for life and that um one of her

  729. 25:47

    questions was

  730. 25:49

do you feel like that's always been a na

  731. 25:51

like it's kind of what we're talking

  732. 25:52

about nature versus nurture you're the

  733. 25:53

you're you know you have you're the

  734. 25:55

daughter of artists you're looking at

  735. 25:57

want you want to be an artist do I want

  736. 26:00

do I want the life of an artist what

  737. 26:01

does that even look like? But there is

  738. 26:03

always like this little thing inside all

  739. 26:05

of us from the minute we're born anyway.

  740. 26:06

Like did you always feel like you had

  741. 26:08

that some kind of lust for life? And her

  742. 26:10

question is, do you think it was innate

  743. 26:13

or was it nurtured by the environment

  744. 26:15

that you were in or both?

  745. 26:17

    >> I, think, both.

  746. 26:19

    >> I, think, I've, like, always, believed, in

  747. 26:21

magic and always believed in love in a

  748. 26:24

really intense way. And I think that

  749. 26:26

    that was nurtured in me

  750. 26:28

    >> from, a, really, young, age., Like, my,, you

  751. 26:32

know, my parents are magical and like my

  752. 26:36

mom like, you know, was this magical

  753. 26:39

creature who like, you know, would come

  754. 26:42

home from work and she was like looking

  755. 26:46

fabulous. But she'd take everything off

  756. 26:47

and immediately put on like a big velvet

  757. 26:50

skirt and gardening gloves and go

  758. 26:52

outside and like teach me how to like

  759. 26:55

pull up stinging nettles to make soup.

  760. 26:57

and like and the soup would be a witch's

  761. 26:59

potion because it was good for you. And

  762. 27:02

like she just had this magic to her and

  763. 27:04

my dad would be like, "We're gonna

  764. 27:05

watercolor together and we're gonna make

  765. 27:06

a masterpiece and like I'll do this blue

  766. 27:09

and you do red and we'll see what we

  767. 27:10

create." Like there was just this

  768. 27:12

    imagination

  769. 27:14

fostered in in me from a really young

  770. 27:16

age. And I just like I believed I was

  771. 27:22

really lucky to get that kind of love

  772. 27:24

and that kind of exposure to seeing the

  773. 27:28

world as a place where magic is

  774. 27:29

    possible.

  775. 27:31

    >> And, I, just, it's, like, the, luckiest, thing

  776. 27:34

ever to have that happen. And I think it

  777. 27:36

like I always think about it as like the

  778. 27:37

Harry Potter, you know, when Harry

  779. 27:39

Potter how when his mom dies, she puts a

  780. 27:42

spell on him that protects him from

  781. 27:44

    dying um with love.

  782. 27:46

    >> I, kind, of, remember, you, kind, of, know

  783. 27:48

    this. Um

  784. 27:49

    >> I've, read, all, of, them, out, loud, and, I

  785. 27:51

    still

  786. 27:51

    >> Harry, Potter's, mom, protects, Harry, Potter

  787. 27:54

because of course the mother always has

  788. 27:56

    to die.

  789. 27:56

    >> She, always, has, to, die, for, the, kid, to, be

  790. 27:57

    on an independent adventure

  791. 27:59

    >> in, every, single, story., Yeah., Um,, there's

  792. 28:01

actually a whole theory about that, but

  793. 28:03

aside Yeah. about um children's stories

  794. 28:06

and then you have to kill the parents

  795. 28:08

    and children's stories because that's

  796. 28:08

how children become the unfolding of

  797. 28:11

their own story, right? they they they

  798. 28:13

become little adults because the mother

  799. 28:15

live long enough to see her child

  800. 28:17

    succeed,

  801. 28:17

    >> god, forbid., Um, but, um, I, always, feel, like

  802. 28:20

that period of time in my life where my

  803. 28:22

parents my what my parents did and

  804. 28:25

    >> gave, me, this, magical, spell, like, love

  805. 28:29

spell where like you know then there

  806. 28:30

were other different hard times um in

  807. 28:32

all of our lives but that early

  808. 28:36

    magic's protected.

  809. 28:38

    >> Oh, my, gosh., And, they, do, say, that, like

  810. 28:41

from like 1 to five or 1 to three like

  811. 28:44

so much I mean it's a lot of pressure on

  812. 28:47

young parents but because that time is

  813. 28:49

so important like but like so much of

  814. 28:52

your belief system about the world and

  815. 28:53

how you feel and if you feel safe and

  816. 28:55

your attachment style is formed like so

  817. 28:58

    early

  818. 28:59

    >> and, are, you, I, mean, because, I, I, sense

  819. 29:01

from you both introvert and extrovert.

  820. 29:03

    >> This, is, true.

  821. 29:04

    >> Oh, my, god, I, got, it, right.

  822. 29:05

    >> You, got, it, right.

  823. 29:06

    >> So, what, tell, me, about, that., What, how

  824. 29:08

have you figured that out? Okay. I see

  825. 29:09

myself as having three cups. There's the

  826. 29:12

    extraversion socialization cup, the

  827. 29:14

alone time cup, and the with one other

  828. 29:17

    person having an intimate conversation

  829. 29:19

    cup.

  830. 29:20

    >> And, I, need, all, three, cups, to, be, somewhat

  831. 29:25

    full to be functioning.

  832. 29:27

    >> Like, if, I've, had, too, much, parties,, work,

  833. 29:31

like not no alone time, and just these

  834. 29:35

two cups are full. Oh, I'm gesturing and

  835. 29:37

this is audio. But the people you're

  836. 29:40

    making, you're gesturing cups.

  837. 29:41

    >> I'm, I'm, gesturing, cups., But, um, the,, you

  838. 29:43

know, if I'm then I really feel bad and

  839. 29:46

I need alone time. If I've got too much

  840. 29:48

alone time and not enough socialization

  841. 29:50

I really feel bad and drained. So I'm

  842. 29:52

always trying to like look at my

  843. 29:55

schedule and my life and be like, am I

  844. 29:57

getting enough friend time in oneonone?

  845. 29:59

Am I getting enough alone time in? Am I

  846. 30:01

    getting enough like

  847. 30:02

    >> energizing, social, outside, in, the, world?

  848. 30:05

going to see a concert, going to see a

  849. 30:07

play, going to something like I need a

  850. 30:09

    little bit of everything.

  851. 30:10

    >> I, love, the, cups, um, idea., Um, I, do

  852. 30:13

something similar where I think about a

  853. 30:16

refrigerator and I think about magnets

  854. 30:18

    and then I

  855. 30:20

    >> in, in, the, best, day, ever,, all, five

  856. 30:22

magnets are on the refrigerator, but I

  857. 30:24

try to get three. So it's like work

  858. 30:27

    motherhood, friendship, you know, uh

  859. 30:30

    spirituality, wellness, some kind of

  860. 30:32

care, and um and uh what's my fifth

  861. 30:36

magnet? Uh relationship. So it's like if

  862. 30:40

you can get three out of five, it's like

  863. 30:42

    today I was a good partner. Today I I

  864. 30:45

did like some good mom stuff and I

  865. 30:47

worked a little bit. Or it's like no

  866. 30:48

today I took care of myself. Today I met

  867. 30:50

with friends and today I you know um

  868. 30:53

gave my kids some good advice. Whatever

  869. 30:55

is the magnets that you can put on

  870. 30:56

there. Very rare to get five.

  871. 30:58

    >> Yeah., But, you, don't, want, to, go, too, long

  872. 31:00

without having a day that has like you

  873. 31:02

don't want to leave one of them off.

  874. 31:04

    >> You, get, a, dusty, magnet.

  875. 31:05

    >> You, don't, want, to, get, a, dusty, magnet.

  876. 31:07

    Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

  877. 31:08

    >> We, could, go, we, could, we, you, and, I, could

  878. 31:10

    sell the cup and magnet.

  879. 31:11

    >> I, was, just, thinking, we, could, make, we

  880. 31:14

could make these magnets. I could do a

  881. 31:16

separate podcast just about this and we

  882. 31:18

    could make billions

  883. 31:19

    >> billions, of, dollars, and, it, would, be, good

  884. 31:21

    another good billion

  885. 31:22

    >> and, it, would, be, like, uh, with, me, today, is

  886. 31:25

she's of course the inventor of the cup

  887. 31:27

theory. Uh she brought me that theory

  888. 31:30

when I was working on my magnet project

  889. 31:32

    and together cups and magnets

  890. 31:34

    >> we're, touring, the, world.

  891. 31:35

    >> Yeah.

  892. 31:42

    >> Um, okay, you've, finished, Stranger, Things.

  893. 31:44

It's done. What was it like um when it's

  894. 31:47

    That's a wrap on Maya Hawk. A a series

  895. 31:50

rap. I know you can't tell us anything

  896. 31:52

but I do hope you tell us how it ends.

  897. 31:54

But um of course I will.

  898. 31:55

    >> Great., Thank, you., You, can, tell, me, off

  899. 31:56

the air. But um uh uh what was it like

  900. 31:59

    hearing series rap?

  901. 32:00

    >> Well,, I, want, to, hear, what, it's, been, like

  902. 32:01

for you like what it was like for you on

  903. 32:03

    Parks. Like it is

  904. 32:04

    >> you, you, know, it's, I, I, think, for, people

  905. 32:06

who don't know, right? So if you're an

  906. 32:08

actor on set, you get um like that's a a

  907. 32:11

season rap on Maya like season 4. All

  908. 32:14

right. and you get your last shot and

  909. 32:16

often people will kind of clap and stand

  910. 32:18

around and say stuff, but series rap is

  911. 32:21

a big deal and on a show like yours

  912. 32:24

which has been such a long journey for

  913. 32:26

you and for everyone involved and

  914. 32:28

there's been strikes and there's been

  915. 32:30

COVID in the middle of all of it and

  916. 32:31

everyone's gotten older and grown up and

  917. 32:32

    everyone's been watching and watching

  918. 32:33

    and watching.

  919. 32:34

    >> Yeah., Um,, a, good, ad, will, make, sure, that

  920. 32:38

    that that that series rap

  921. 32:42

means something, that people are there

  922. 32:44

and they're there for you and like it's

  923. 32:46

    just a it's a big moment.

  924. 32:47

    >> Matt, and, Ross,, who, are, amazing,, wrote, uh

  925. 32:50

scenes that seem to have some connective

  926. 32:53

tissue for the characters and for us.

  927. 32:57

And on this last day of shooting, we got

  928. 32:59

to film these scenes that had this

  929. 33:02

    beautiful connective tissue. And I

  930. 33:04

actually think I like learned something

  931. 33:06

about acting that way that day and being

  932. 33:09

present in your own emotion as a person

  933. 33:12

and the emotion of the character and

  934. 33:14

allowing those two wires to connect. And

  935. 33:17

I I my life has been changed as an

  936. 33:20

actor. The way that I act has changed

  937. 33:21

since that series Rap Day. It

  938. 33:24

    >> and, it, was, so, emotional., I, cried, all, day

  939. 33:29

long from beginning to end in these like

  940. 33:31

kind of crashing waves and I just love I

  941. 33:35

love everybody on that show so much and

  942. 33:37

it's been so it's shaped me so much and

  943. 33:41

we've been on such a long complicated

  944. 33:43

    journey together.

  945. 33:44

    >> Started, when, you, were, what, 19?

  946. 33:45

    >> I, started, I, was, 19, which, is, like, you

  947. 33:47

know lots of them started at like nine

  948. 33:49

and have been doing it for 10 years and

  949. 33:51

I've been doing it for seven and started

  950. 33:52

at 19. So I mean I got nothing on them.

  951. 33:54

But it's funny that you've been on a

  952. 33:56

show for seven years and you still think

  953. 33:57

you're the new kid. That's crazy.

  954. 33:59

    >> I, do., I, do, still, think, I'm, the, new, kid.

  955. 34:01

And um but it was really emotional and

  956. 34:04

    and

  957. 34:07

    >> I, don't, know, if, I'll, ever, have, another

  958. 34:08

    experience like it.

  959. 34:09

    >> Yeah., I, mean,, congratulations, on, that

  960. 34:10

show. It's your work is so good. That

  961. 34:13

show is so great and it really I mean

  962. 34:16

just to you know I'm sure you can feel

  963. 34:18

    the anticipation growing. I I can't even

  964. 34:21

imagine, the, press, junket, you're, going to

  965. 34:22

have to do when this when this show

  966. 34:24

comes out of like it's going to be

  967. 34:26

bananas. Um of how you're going to be

  968. 34:29

talking about like it it that show feels

  969. 34:32

    like

  970. 34:34

    >> I, don't, know, that, the, audience, has, been

  971. 34:35

with through it with you too. Like it it

  972. 34:37

feels like the audience has also been

  973. 34:39

    through it.

  974. 34:40

    >> Yeah.

  975. 34:40

    >> I, guess, is, the, only, way, to, say, it., That

  976. 34:42

the the kids on the show and the

  977. 34:44

audience have not had an easy couple of

  978. 34:47

    years.

  979. 34:48

    >> No., And, it's, there's, something, about, it

  980. 34:50

that feels very cathartic about the end

  981. 34:52

    of it.

  982. 34:53

    >> Yeah., And, I, don't, even, know, if, I'm, right

  983. 34:54

about this, but I have always seen the

  984. 34:56

upside down as a metaphor for depression

  985. 34:58

and anxiety and in some ways of like

  986. 35:01

    your teen years.

  987. 35:03

    >> It's, really, hard, to, be, a, teenager, and

  988. 35:05

the like hor the hormones that get

  989. 35:08

    released, the new emotions uh

  990. 35:12

that get released of depression and

  991. 35:14

    anxiety and self-awareness and

  992. 35:16

    self-consciousness. It's like a hard

  993. 35:18

period of life to survive. Um, and I've

  994. 35:22

always seen the upside down as like

  995. 35:24

this, you know, portal that opened up to

  996. 35:26

all those emotions for these young

  997. 35:29

people and like navigating one's way out

  998. 35:32

of it and uh through community and

  999. 35:34

bravery and friendship. Um, it's really

  1000. 35:37

emotional and like the, you know, the

  1001. 35:42

allegorories to what's going on in the

  1002. 35:44

world right now are plentiful and

  1003. 35:47

    >> it, means, a, lot, to, me, to, get, to, be, a, part

  1004. 35:49

of something like this because it's

  1005. 35:50

really a once in a-lifetime thing. These

  1006. 35:52

like adventure stories and these hero

  1007. 35:55

stories about kids and groups of kids

  1008. 35:57

grow up with this, you know, they grow

  1009. 35:59

up simultaneously with you and it's I'm

  1010. 36:03

so grateful. I just it's such a special

  1011. 36:05

thing to get to be a part of.

  1012. 36:06

    >> That's, so, awesome., And, and, and, you, and

  1013. 36:08

and your friends like Joe and Sadi are

  1014. 36:10

like doing music. You're on stage.

  1015. 36:12

You're all doing a bunch of things

  1016. 36:13

together at the same time. Can I talk

  1017. 36:14

about your music for a second? Because

  1018. 36:17

    >> I, would, be, curious, your, relationship, to

  1019. 36:19

    you're such a a you're such a a a

  1020. 36:23

    talented and multi-talented artist who

  1021. 36:25

can do a lot of things very well. And

  1022. 36:26

like what I imagine for you, what I

  1023. 36:28

picture in the future is us hearing you

  1024. 36:32

writing and directing and producing and

  1025. 36:34

doing so many things as well as acting

  1026. 36:36

and music. But right now you're you have

  1027. 36:37

two very big careers in what are it and

  1028. 36:41

sometimes feel like very dis desperate

  1029. 36:44

ways of participating in the arts. It's

  1030. 36:46

    like

  1031. 36:47

if acting acting is one kid and music is

  1032. 36:50

    the other.

  1033. 36:51

    >> Who's, my, favorite, kid?

  1034. 36:52

    >> Yeah., Who's, your, favorite, kid?

  1035. 36:54

    >> Well,, okay., The, way, I, like, to, see, the

  1036. 36:55

way I first of all, I don't always do a

  1037. 36:57

    good job balancing. I don't have a

  1038. 36:59

favorite kid. I love creativity and I

  1039. 37:02

love storytelling and I see them as

  1040. 37:04

completely connected and like if there

  1041. 37:07

was an outlet in the wall with two

  1042. 37:08

plugs, it's like different lamps that

  1043. 37:11

you plug into the same power source. Um

  1044. 37:14

is how I feel about it. That said, I'm a

  1045. 37:16

much more trained actor than I am a

  1046. 37:19

musician. And I'm a much more confident

  1047. 37:21

actor than a musician. walking onto set

  1048. 37:24

or onto st like you know a rehearsal

  1049. 37:27

period is where I feel confident and

  1050. 37:30

comfortable um and I feel like I know

  1051. 37:32

the rules and I know like I like I like

  1052. 37:34

it there and I feel really grounded.

  1053. 37:37

Music is really scary and it's like it's

  1054. 37:40

like it terrifies me. Performing live

  1055. 37:42

terrifies me. Writing terrifies me. What

  1056. 37:44

people are going to make of my lyrics

  1057. 37:45

terrify me. Like it's all really scary.

  1058. 37:48

So it's the same power source. One of

  1059. 37:50

the lamps is like a scary Halloween lamp

  1060. 37:53

that I like don't totally know how it

  1061. 37:55

works and the other lamp is like my

  1062. 37:57

    favorite bedside nightlight or something

  1063. 37:59

that's like this is my comfort zone.

  1064. 38:01

    >> And, if, you, want, to, listen, to, Maya's, lamp

  1065. 38:03

workshop, you need to go to the Beverly

  1066. 38:05

    show.

  1067. 38:05

    >> You, need, to, go, to, Cups, and, Magnets.

  1068. 38:07

    >> Lamps, and, Magnets.

  1069. 38:07

    >> Cups, and, lamps, and, magnets.

  1070. 38:08

    >> No,, it's, so, true.

  1071. 38:09

    >> Got, a, whole, product, line

  1072. 38:10

    >> just, to, put, out, just, to, manifest, just

  1073. 38:12

    for a second for fun.

  1074. 38:14

    >> Do, you, ever, uh, like, do, you, ever, think

  1075. 38:17

    about

  1076. 38:18

    >> writing, a, musical?, No.

  1077. 38:19

    >> Oh., Do, you, think, about, writing, a

  1078. 38:20

    musical?

  1079. 38:21

    >> Yes., But, but, but, that's, not, what, you

  1080. 38:22

    were gonna say.

  1081. 38:23

    >> Oh, my, god., But, what, musical, do, you, want

  1082. 38:25

    to write?

  1083. 38:25

    >> I, don't, know.

  1084. 38:26

    >> Yes., Okay., The, answer, is, yes., So, great.

  1085. 38:28

Write that. But do you ever have like a

  1086. 38:30

a a fantasy of um being on stage singing

  1087. 38:33

and singing with someone who you like

  1088. 38:36

you know, deeply like do you have a an

  1089. 38:39

artist whose voice a musical artist

  1090. 38:42

    whose voice you fantasize about

  1091. 38:44

harmonizing with and singing with? Alive

  1092. 38:47

or dead? You know, I I have a lot of

  1093. 38:51

different people that I love. I am

  1094. 38:55

    terrified of harmonizing.

  1095. 38:57

    >> You, are?, That's, the, only, thing, that, I

  1096. 39:00

    can kind of do

  1097. 39:00

    >> really., It, really, scares, me., I, I, am, not

  1098. 39:03

a good harmonizer and and I and it

  1099. 39:06

    scares me.

  1100. 39:06

    >> So,, what, about, forget, the, harmony,

  1101. 39:08

    >> but, just, back, and, forth, like

  1102. 39:10

    >> I, like, I, would, love, I, would, love, to, I

  1103. 39:14

would love to sing with Joanie. Um, I I

  1104. 39:16

mean I would have to do like a harmony

  1105. 39:18

like a one note harmony while she danced

  1106. 39:20

all over the place, but I I love Joanie.

  1107. 39:23

I mean, this morning I was listening to

  1108. 39:25

Judy Sill a bunch and I love Judy Sill

  1109. 39:27

and I love Joanie and I'm obsessed with

  1110. 39:30

Adrien Lanker and I am obsessed with

  1111. 39:33

Taylor Swift and I'm obsessed with I

  1112. 39:36

    mean I just love

  1113. 39:38

    >> You, love, singer, female?

  1114. 39:39

    >> I, love, singer, songwriters.

  1115. 39:41

    >> Yeah.

  1116. 39:41

    >> I, love, songwriters., I, just, think, they're

  1117. 39:43

    so cool.

  1118. 39:44

    >> And, I, It's, like, almost, that, fantasy, is

  1119. 39:46

more like to get to write a song with

  1120. 39:48

    someone. Yeah.

  1121. 39:49

    >> Not, like, singing, it, and, performing, it, is

  1122. 39:52

less the dream. It's like writing a song

  1123. 39:54

with someone. That would be the dream.

  1124. 39:56

    >> Ooh,, I, love, Okay., And, speaking, of

  1125. 39:58

writers and and artists, you have worked

  1126. 40:01

with in the in in in films, you've

  1127. 40:04

worked with really talented uh distinct

  1128. 40:07

    voices. Wes Anderson, um, Bradley

  1129. 40:11

    Cooper, Quentyn Tarantino.

  1130. 40:14

That that experience of getting on a set

  1131. 40:17

with someone who feels like they have a

  1132. 40:19

very strong sense. Do you like that? You

  1133. 40:21

like like being in someone's simulation

  1134. 40:23

basically. Do you like jumping in there?

  1135. 40:25

    >> Yes., I, find, it, extremely, fun, and, really

  1136. 40:27

    relaxing.

  1137. 40:28

    >> Yes.

  1138. 40:29

    >> Um,

  1139. 40:29

    >> you, were, in, uh, once, upon, a, time, in

  1140. 40:31

Hollywood with like five actors. You

  1141. 40:33

were all playing Manson. Manson show

  1142. 40:36

    Manson people. Mansonish.

  1143. 40:38

    Mansesque.

  1144. 40:39

    >> And, did, your, mom, give, you, um, Thurman?, Is

  1145. 40:41

your mom did she give you any advice

  1146. 40:42

about working with uh Quentyn? Huh?

  1147. 40:44

    >> Keep, your, shoes, on.

  1148. 40:45

    >> Keep, your, shoes, on,, man., Baby,, keep, them

  1149. 40:47

on, baby. You're going to try to get

  1150. 40:50

    >> Keep, them, on,, baby., Keep, them, on., Keep

  1151. 40:53

    those shoes on.

  1152. 40:55

Perfect advice. Perfect. Did she come to

  1153. 40:57

    the set?

  1154. 40:58

    >> No.

  1155. 40:59

    >> Yeah., It's, weird, to, have, your, parents

  1156. 41:00

    come to set. Yeah

  1157. 41:01

    >> I, know., It's, just, I, don't, even

  1158. 41:02

    >> Well,, I, don't, even, find, it, weird., The

  1159. 41:04

shoe just wasn't in town. We're New

  1160. 41:05

    Yorkers. It was LA

  1161. 41:07

    >> right?, She's, like,, I'm, not, going, to, LA.

  1162. 41:08

No, I have too many things to do.

  1163. 41:09

    >> I've, been, to, that, set, cuz, I, was, a, set

  1164. 41:11

kid. I think it's the best place on

  1165. 41:13

    earth.

  1166. 41:14

    >> Okay,, tell, me, about, sets, you, were, on

  1167. 41:15

    when you were a kid.

  1168. 41:16

    >> Oh., Oh,, so, many., I, mean,, one, of, the, most

  1169. 41:18

memorable ones was the set of my super

  1170. 41:20

ex-girlfriend because I got to get into

  1171. 41:22

    the flying suit

  1172. 41:24

    >> and, there's, a, movie, that, my, mom, did.

  1173. 41:25

It's really good and really funny and

  1174. 41:26

but she had she was a superhero and so

  1175. 41:28

she flew in it and I got to beef like I

  1176. 41:30

got to get into the thing and like fly

  1177. 41:32

across this studio and I but really the

  1178. 41:36

thing I remember about sets is they all

  1179. 41:37

blur together except I love Crafty

  1180. 41:40

    >> and, I, loved, the, it, was, like, this, safe

  1181. 41:43

little world where I could be alone. So

  1182. 41:45

like no one needed to be watching me. I

  1183. 41:47

could walk over to Crafty and take

  1184. 41:49

cookies and M&M's and gummy bears and

  1185. 41:50

get them and I could go watch the stunt

  1186. 41:52

people practice and then I could go

  1187. 41:53

watercolor in the trailer and I could go

  1188. 41:55

to the costume shop and help them sew.

  1189. 41:57

And it was just like Disneyland

  1190. 41:59

basically where I was independent and

  1191. 42:01

left alone and allowed to explore and

  1192. 42:03

allowed to just like park my butt at the

  1193. 42:04

monitors and watch take after take after

  1194. 42:07

take after take. And it's really where I

  1195. 42:08

fell in love with acting was backstage

  1196. 42:10

at the theater and on set. And so I

  1197. 42:14

think it was the most fun thing ever.

  1198. 42:15

What always shocks me is when I invite

  1199. 42:17

people to come to set that they don't

  1200. 42:19

want to come and when they come they get

  1201. 42:21

bored. I'm like, "What do you mean it's

  1202. 42:23

Disneyland?" And they're like, "You just

  1203. 42:25

did the same scene nine times from one

  1204. 42:28

direction and then move the camera and

  1205. 42:30

are doing it nine more times. How on

  1206. 42:33

    earth is this like Disneyland?"

  1207. 42:34

    >> This, is, so, interesting., I'm, the, exact

  1208. 42:36

opposite. People want to come to set

  1209. 42:38

because they seem like it's interesting

  1210. 42:40

    and I say it's not.

  1211. 42:42

    >> It's, boring., Well,, I, it's, very, true, and

  1212. 42:45

I will say one of my favorite things in

  1213. 42:47

the world generally is to be not busy

  1214. 42:48

around a busy person. So, I still like

  1215. 42:51

to go with people to set because it's

  1216. 42:54

where I'm the most at peace because I

  1217. 42:56

all my cups are getting filled. I'm not

  1218. 42:58

    alone,

  1219. 42:59

    >> but, I, also, and, there's, tons, of, exposure

  1220. 43:01

to people if I want it, but I can be

  1221. 43:04

totally alone and not busy and just like

  1222. 43:07

reading my little book somewhere and

  1223. 43:08

it's fine. So, it's got this like

  1224. 43:10

social, not social, privacy, all these

  1225. 43:14

different things all at once. And it

  1226. 43:16

feels so good to me. It's like such a

  1227. 43:18

nice way to spend time with someone is

  1228. 43:19

like five minutes when they have a

  1229. 43:21

break. Hi, how are you? How are That was

  1230. 43:23

cool. That was good. Goodbye. I'm

  1231. 43:24

reading my book again. Like, it's that's

  1232. 43:26

    it's I love So, I think I there's

  1233. 43:29

something I really love about visiting

  1234. 43:30

other people on set and having visitors

  1235. 43:32

on set when they feel like I do. And you

  1236. 43:36

brought up the cup system and just once

  1237. 43:38

again for $59.99 you too can learn

  1238. 43:41

    Maya's cup system.

  1239. 43:42

    >> It, comes, with, a, workbook.

  1240. 43:45

    >> There, is, a, we, do, a, in, person, you, have, to

  1241. 43:47

watch seven minute video before a payw

  1242. 43:50

wall. We're going to be in Reno November

  1243. 43:53

15th. We're very excited. Um okay. And

  1244. 43:56

then uh the the other question I wanted

  1245. 43:58

to ask you is cuz you know you played

  1246. 44:01

anxiety, the world is anxious, you're

  1247. 44:04

really in touch with those feelings and

  1248. 44:05

you take great pride and I think in

  1249. 44:07

being part of like a big discussion

  1250. 44:09

    about it.

  1251. 44:10

    >> What, do, you

  1252. 44:12

listen to, watch, read? How do you make

  1253. 44:16

yourself laugh? Like what are you

  1254. 44:19

getting where are you getting your your

  1255. 44:21

Where are you getting your joy from?

  1256. 44:22

    >> Where, am, I, getting, my, joy, from?, Well,

  1257. 44:24

recently I got a lot of joy from the

  1258. 44:26

    Fourthwing book series.

  1259. 44:29

    >> Um,, it's, fantasy., It's, like, romantasy

  1260. 44:32

    fantasy dragon college, basically a

  1261. 44:35

dragon war college. Um, and that was my

  1262. 44:38

    escapism of choice. I unfortunately

  1263. 44:41

    >> you, said, so, many, things, just, now., Okay.

  1264. 44:43

    So, say again. It's called

  1265. 44:45

    >> The, fourth, wing, is, the, name, of, the, first

  1266. 44:47

    book

  1267. 44:47

    >> and, it, is, a, dragon, college., It's, it's, a

  1268. 44:50

it's a war college for dragon riders in

  1269. 44:53

    a fantasy universe. It's romantic. It's

  1270. 44:55

    very sexy. Um uh

  1271. 44:59

    >> I've, been, looking, for, a, new, fantasy, is

  1272. 45:00

my new um like who I never thought it

  1273. 45:03

would be a genre I'm into. I'm so into

  1274. 45:05

    it.

  1275. 45:05

    >> I'm, so, into, it., I, felt, the, same, way., I'm

  1276. 45:07

    so into it.

  1277. 45:08

    >> Have, you, read, The, Name, of, the, Wind?

  1278. 45:10

    >> No.

  1279. 45:11

    >> Okay., Patrick, Rothfus.

  1280. 45:14

    >> Uh, R, O, T, H, F, U, Sus.

  1281. 45:16

    >> Rothfus., Rothfus.

  1282. 45:17

    >> Roth., Um, he, wrote, a, book, called, The, Name

  1283. 45:20

    of the Wind.

  1284. 45:20

    >> Okay.

  1285. 45:21

    >> And, it, is, um, it, is, a, a, series.

  1286. 45:26

It's part of the King Killer Chronicles.

  1287. 45:29

    >> Um, and, it's, a, fantasy, novel, and, it's

  1288. 45:31

basically just like it's just a

  1289. 45:34

    >> the, story, of, um, a, like, a, child, who, grows

  1290. 45:38

up in an inn and how he becomes like

  1291. 45:41

this kingiller. It's but it's very like

  1292. 45:45

school to train to get to the thing.

  1293. 45:48

    >> I, love, I, give, me, a, training, sequence., I

  1294. 45:52

    >> make, me, into, the, person, I, was, always

  1295. 45:54

    meant to be.

  1296. 45:55

    >> I, know., I, love, it, too.

  1297. 45:56

    >> Force, me, to, do, it

  1298. 45:58

    >> and, just

  1299. 46:01

    >> Oh, my, gosh., I, love, that, because, what, do

  1300. 46:03

you like about the fourth wing? What did

  1301. 46:04

    you like it just

  1302. 46:05

    >> Well,, there's, incredible, hardcore

  1303. 46:06

training sequences. There's a very hot

  1304. 46:10

um like guy who's like he's a rebel and

  1305. 46:13

like maybe he's bad except obviously the

  1306. 46:16

bad guys are the actually the good guys

  1307. 46:17

and the good guys are the bad guys and

  1308. 46:18

you have to figure that out and it's

  1309. 46:20

awesome and and he like trains her cuz

  1310. 46:22

he's like you their lives get wed

  1311. 46:24

together spoilers. Um and like he's like

  1312. 46:27

you have to live so that I can live and

  1313. 46:29

so he's like do situps and she's like

  1314. 46:31

okay and it really it really works for

  1315. 46:35

me is all I can say. Um, and situps. Do

  1316. 46:40

    situps.

  1317. 46:41

    >> You, got, to, have, a, strong, core, if, you're

  1318. 46:42

    going to core.

  1319. 46:45

    >> Those, dragons, go, right, for, your, core.

  1320. 46:46

    You got to

  1321. 46:47

    >> Yeah., And, she's, like, stabbing, him, with

  1322. 46:49

knives and he's like, "Yeah, good job.

  1323. 46:51

Good job. Good job." You know, it's

  1324. 46:52

    amazing. Um, and

  1325. 46:54

    >> do, you, read, or, listen?

  1326. 46:55

    >> I, I I, read, those., Um,, I, I, do, a, both., I

  1327. 46:58

do a lot of audio books, but I've

  1328. 47:00

recently been trying to get back into

  1329. 47:01

    paper paper books. Um

  1330. 47:04

    >> and, uh,, so, that's, been, bringing, me, joy.

  1331. 47:07

I watch piles of TV. I love comedy.

  1332. 47:10

Recently, I loved the studio. That was

  1333. 47:12

    really fun.

  1334. 47:13

    >> So, funny., Wasn't, Hans.

  1335. 47:15

    >> I, mean,, the, choice,, the, saratoral

  1336. 47:17

    choices in that alone. But

  1337. 47:19

    >> they're, incredible.

  1338. 47:20

    >> The, way, that, character, is, so, ridiculous.

  1339. 47:24

And my buddy Ike is in that who is so

  1340. 47:26

great, too. That episode where he kept

  1341. 47:27

getting thanked at the Golden Globes

  1342. 47:30

    >> and, Scott, was, thanking, him, is, just

  1343. 47:32

    >> extraordinary.

  1344. 47:33

    >> [ __ ], stupid, and, funny., Also,, the, old

  1345. 47:35

school Hollywood party where Zoe Kravitz

  1346. 47:38

is like, "Old school Hollywood means

  1347. 47:40

there's drugs in the food." I love that

  1348. 47:42

one really got me. That's not what

  1349. 47:45

touching me. She was so good in that

  1350. 47:47

    episode. Um

  1351. 47:49

    yeah. So, I' I I I've been doing that. I

  1352. 47:52

    I

  1353. 47:52

    >> Do, you, Would, you, ever, like, um, I, mean,, I

  1354. 47:54

guess Str You know, Stranger Things is

  1355. 47:56

    like it's a new It's like current

  1356. 47:59

fantasy. I mean, that's fantasy. But

  1357. 48:01

    um,

  1358. 48:02

    >> would, you, ever, want, to

  1359. 48:04

    >> Yes., Okay.

  1360. 48:06

    >> Great.

  1361. 48:08

    >> I, don't, need, to, finish, it.

  1362. 48:11

Um, because I think I think that what

  1363. 48:13

I'm getting like I really don't need to

  1364. 48:16

finish it because what I'm getting from

  1365. 48:17

our convo today is like story

  1366. 48:20

adventure, fantasy, the the kind of

  1367. 48:23

bigness of life is like what energizes

  1368. 48:27

you. like you're excited about the next

  1369. 48:30

like you're really looking forward you

  1370. 48:31

have like a really big capacity for big

  1371. 48:34

    swirly ideas.

  1372. 48:35

    >> Yeah,, I, really, love, them., I, mean, not, to

  1373. 48:37

mention that like almost all of the best

  1374. 48:39

fantasy is about humans banding together

  1375. 48:42

to take over fascist regimes. Like it's

  1376. 48:44

    just a general theme

  1377. 48:45

    >> Yes.

  1378. 48:46

    >> of, um

  1379. 48:48

    >> of, of, fantasy, and, like, about, the, little

  1380. 48:51

guy rising up. And I really and I think

  1381. 48:54

that's partly why it's that as a genre

  1382. 48:57

is kind of exploding right now. Like

  1383. 48:58

people like romanty and fantasy people

  1384. 49:00

are really it's like always at the top

  1385. 49:02

of the bestseller list these days. And I

  1386. 49:03

think it's because community it's always

  1387. 49:06

about like a unlikely band of maniacs

  1388. 49:10

    and different people from different

  1389. 49:11

places that find each other and come

  1390. 49:14

together to try to build a new world

  1391. 49:16

that works better for them than it used

  1392. 49:17

to. I just want to say that like getting

  1393. 49:20

the experience of talking about Inside

  1394. 49:21

Out 2 with you and getting to know you

  1395. 49:22

has been so great and I hope we get to

  1396. 49:24

    make another one.

  1397. 49:25

    >> I, would, really, like, I, mean, I, would, like

  1398. 49:27

to do anything with you. Um that would

  1399. 49:29

be so wonderful. I but I will really

  1400. 49:31

hope we get to make another one cuz I

  1401. 49:33

want to see more of anxiety and joy

  1402. 49:34

    learning how to work together.

  1403. 49:36

    >> I, know., And, they, have, the, same, physical

  1404. 49:38

    symptoms

  1405. 49:39

    >> and, um, they, look, they, get, things, done.

  1406. 49:42

    Okay.

  1407. 49:42

    >> They, get, things, done, and, they're

  1408. 49:43

excited. Some emotions like to chill

  1409. 49:45

out, lie on the couch, and those are

  1410. 49:47

important, too. But anxiety and joy are

  1411. 49:51

    gonna like keep things moving.

  1412. 49:53

    >> Yeah.

  1413. 49:53

    >> Yeah,, I, know., They, are.

  1414. 49:54

    >> I'm, so, happy, that, you, came, today., Joy.

  1415. 49:57

I'm joyful that you came today.

  1416. 49:59

    >> I, was, anxious, about, it.

  1417. 50:00

    >> No,, I, wasn't, actually., I, was, just

  1418. 50:02

    excited. Thank you so much.

  1419. 50:03

    >> Thank, you, so, much, for, coming,, Maya., You

  1420. 50:06

and love seeing you. Thank you so much.

  1421. 50:08

You're the best. And I would do

  1422. 50:10

something with you even with our real

  1423. 50:11

    flesh and blood bodies.

  1424. 50:12

    >> Okay., Yeah,, we, could, do, that,, too., I

  1425. 50:14

    mean,

  1426. 50:14

    >> I, prefer, animated,, but

  1427. 50:16
